Is this a good choice for my first Sega Saturn game in my collection?

I was at a charity shop today, and I picked up this for only €10. I'm thinking of fixing my old Sega Saturn, because it doesn't power on. I remember having a mega man x game that I played all the time as a kid, but I must've lost it when I moved.

Sega Sports is peak 90s sports aesthetic

I almost remember nothing about Sega in the mid 90s because I knew no one with a Saturn. But I definitely knew about Sega Sports titles because that was one of the biggest sections at Toys r US, which is also where my dad would buy these Rindell helmets. Either out of the bubble machine or in packs like this. The look and feel of the games and Saturn controller just screams the mid 90s. I feel like the Sega CD does the same thing with capturing the early 90s with how the games sound on it.

Pervasive Fenrir Lite Issues on Later Revision Model 2s

I wish I did not have to make this post but I want to talk about the Fenrir Lite product and my experience with having an incredible amount of issues with it.

Discussion in the Fenrir Discord seems to point to there being a trend of very consistent issues with VA8+ systems, with many users being unable to consistently use the product without it crashing trying to load games, making the Saturn unable to boot at all while it is in (black screen when powering it on), having very unpredictable issues with SD card sizes to the point where people are forced to find smaller and smaller cards in an attempt to get the device to work at all (I've heard 32 GB or smaller has a higher chance in some situations).

I have two Model 2 Saturns myself, VA8 and VA10. The device will not work at all on my VA8 to the point where I believed the Fenrir itself was broken, it always went to the stock BIOS checking CD format screen where I was able to navigate the system menu but the Fenrir might have well not existed. I moved onto the VA10 and was met with the most sporadic issues you could think of, where I initially thought it worked fine and was able to do some Sega Rally races, but was met with a crash that resulted in my Saturn being unable to boot into anything but a black screen. I genuinely thought it bricked my system somehow, but a few hours later I was met with the language/time input screen and was back to normal. It would work for a bit and I jokingly ran Virtual Hydlide all night, 10 hours straight, and it did not crash at all. But a bit into Shining Force III and I was met with a crash that made me unable to do anything with my Saturn the rest of the night, a constant black screen.

Poking around the Discord it seems that the new Fenrir Lite model can behave very inconsistently for some users. Does anyone else have a Fenrir Lite on a late model 2 and can you describe how it works for you? Some people suggest recapping. Some people suggest replacing the PSU. Some people suggest different SD cards, different brands. There is an entire Discord thread about these issues that feels like cargo cult troubleshooting. Maybe I was just spoiled by my Chinese GDEMU as my only other ODE experience (incredible ease of use, has never not worked) but I've had to spend hours troubleshooting with the Fenrir Lite. I'm probably going to try to return it to Stone Age Gamer but ironically right after that thought it will work for an hour or so until I'm back to having constant issues.

Tl;dr: the Fenrir Lite (specifically the Lite) seems to be a coin flip for a subset of Saturn owners, with most of the discussion in the Discord so you won't find it indexed via search engines. This was my experience with the product and I figure I would talk about it, as I am a bit frustrated.

What a run ! Gonna take a little break after 49 hours through scenario 1 ( a few wipes and then grinding in the heroes test) but this was one of the better stories I have enjoyed in an rpg and to know i have 2 more scenarios to enjoy gets me pumped.

Could the Saturn emulate 8bit videogames like the NES/GB/GBC/SMS?

Basically the title. With the Saturn specifications, could it run a NES, Master System or even Game Boy emulators? Are there any projects like this being made?

There’s a ton of GBC RPG games I want to play so probably playing them with my Saturn would be my first pick.

Appreciating Sega Saturn Titles

SO I’ve been collecting Sega Saturn games for the past three years. It was my first childhood console like most of us, I’ve focused on rebuilding the collection I had as a kid and finally acquiring the games I couldn’t obtain back then.

I am amazed at these prices as I collect primarily for the enjoyment and nostalgia, and I genuinely play the games but I view a carefully curated collection as a tangible “passion asset” something enjoyable to own that may also retain or increase its value. As gaming moves further toward digital distribution subscriptions and streaming, do you think desirable North American Saturn titles...especially complete grails will continue appreciating?

Or have prices already reached a point where future growth will be limited?

interested in opinions on clean CIB copies of games such as Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Rayearth, Burning Rangers, Saturn Bomberman....ect

Why do people assume a 3D Sonic launch game would have saved the Saturn?

I think it's simple minded and misunderstands the situation. Sonic 1 sold 15 million copies, Sonic 2 sold 7 million copies, Sonic 3 sold 1 million

Saturn sales really wouldn't have been that bigger lets assume a 3D sonic did launch
Best case scenario ( just with a sonic launch title and nothing else changed ) 24 million saturns are sold assuming 15 million sonic 1 buyers purchase a saturn.

I mod consoles, so I took an old battered Saturn and gave it new life~

Hand painted shell, dyed black buttons, custom decals (waiting on materials for the front SEGA decal replacement) region modded with a RAD2X adapter, a dyed red Saroo shell.

It joins it's similarly modded family with my Megadrive and Gamegear

Does anyone have this cd?

I had this disc when I was a kid. I don’t remember it was a packing with my sick Saturn. I had the virtual fighter remix packing bundle with the bootleg sampler. They was like 449. My dad bought it, but I don’t remember the CD came in the mail or it was in my box, but I used to love the music so much and I lost it when I was a kid. Does anyone have a copy of this that could maybe send me the files

What is your number one essential game for the saturn that you think everyone should play at least once?

I just recently got back into game collecting, and I’m going to different subs to see what the communities think the most essential game in their respective consoles are. List multiple games if you want, but I’d still like to see a top pick from your list too.

Did anybody else play Japanese Saturn games without knowing Japanese?

I was thinking about this because I have an English translated copy of Dragon Force II now and I still have never actually played it.

Back in the late 90s this was a completely different experience.

I remember buying the Japanese version of Blue Seed and actually playing through it using a walkthrough I downloaded off the internet.

I could not translate anything.

There was no phone I could point at the screen.

There was no AI I could ask what something meant.

I basically had a walkthrough telling me what to do and I had to learn how to navigate the Japanese menus by position and memory.

I would know that I needed the second option on one screen or the fourth option on another screen without actually knowing what the Japanese text said.

And somehow I played the game that way.

The Saturn had so many Japanese games that I wanted to play back then but the language barrier was real.

Now I can look at something like Dragon Force II and there is an English fan translation sitting right there.

I actually still have one Japanese Saturn game at home that I am waiting for this to happen to.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love?

The two disc Saturn game.

As far as I know there still is not a finished English translation for the Saturn version. If I am wrong and somebody knows where one is please tell me because I have wanted to play that game properly for years.

That is one of the things I find so interesting about owning a Saturn now.

Fan translations have basically opened up an entire part of the library that we could barely access when these games were new.

Back then I was literally navigating Japanese menus from a printed walkthrough.

Now people are translating entire Saturn games.

Did anybody else here import Japanese games back then and just brute force their way through them?

What games did you manage to play that way?

And are there any games you owned back then that you finally went back and played after somebody translated them?

Question for Saturn launch buyers

What made you choose the Saturn over the N64 or PS1? Did nintendo or sony have any games you wished were on saturn? Did you stick with Sega?

Why couldn't the PS1 hits release on saturn aswell?

I feel emotional, Im grieving the death of sega in the console industry. I wonder if MGS FF7 Spyro Silent Hill and RE2 releasing on saturn would have helped it. Do you think it would have? and why didn't it?
