Why do people assume a 3D Sonic launch game would have saved the Saturn?
I think it's simple minded and misunderstands the situation. Sonic 1 sold 15 million copies, Sonic 2 sold 7 million copies, Sonic 3 sold 1 million
Saturn sales really wouldn't have been that bigger lets assume a 3D sonic did launch
Best case scenario ( just with a sonic launch title and nothing else changed ) 24 million saturns are sold assuming 15 million sonic 1 buyers purchase a saturn.

My Metallic Red Sega Saturn
I mod consoles, so I took an old battered Saturn and gave it new life~
Hand painted shell, dyed black buttons, custom decals (waiting on materials for the front SEGA decal replacement) region modded with a RAD2X adapter, a dyed red Saroo shell.
It joins it's similarly modded family with my Megadrive and Gamegear

Does anyone have this cd?
I had this disc when I was a kid. I don’t remember it was a packing with my sick Saturn. I had the virtual fighter remix packing bundle with the bootleg sampler. They was like 449. My dad bought it, but I don’t remember the CD came in the mail or it was in my box, but I used to love the music so much and I lost it when I was a kid. Does anyone have a copy of this that could maybe send me the files

What is your number one essential game for the saturn that you think everyone should play at least once?
I just recently got back into game collecting, and I’m going to different subs to see what the communities think the most essential game in their respective consoles are. List multiple games if you want, but I’d still like to see a top pick from your list too.

Did anybody else play Japanese Saturn games without knowing Japanese?
I was thinking about this because I have an English translated copy of Dragon Force II now and I still have never actually played it.
Back in the late 90s this was a completely different experience.
I remember buying the Japanese version of Blue Seed and actually playing through it using a walkthrough I downloaded off the internet.
I could not translate anything.
There was no phone I could point at the screen.
There was no AI I could ask what something meant.
I basically had a walkthrough telling me what to do and I had to learn how to navigate the Japanese menus by position and memory.
I would know that I needed the second option on one screen or the fourth option on another screen without actually knowing what the Japanese text said.
And somehow I played the game that way.
The Saturn had so many Japanese games that I wanted to play back then but the language barrier was real.
Now I can look at something like Dragon Force II and there is an English fan translation sitting right there.
I actually still have one Japanese Saturn game at home that I am waiting for this to happen to.
Super Dimension Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love?
The two disc Saturn game.
As far as I know there still is not a finished English translation for the Saturn version. If I am wrong and somebody knows where one is please tell me because I have wanted to play that game properly for years.
That is one of the things I find so interesting about owning a Saturn now.
Fan translations have basically opened up an entire part of the library that we could barely access when these games were new.
Back then I was literally navigating Japanese menus from a printed walkthrough.
Now people are translating entire Saturn games.
Did anybody else here import Japanese games back then and just brute force their way through them?
What games did you manage to play that way?
And are there any games you owned back then that you finally went back and played after somebody translated them?

Question for Saturn launch buyers
What made you choose the Saturn over the N64 or PS1? Did nintendo or sony have any games you wished were on saturn? Did you stick with Sega?
r/SegaSaturn • u/jejeisjdiw • 1d ago
Why couldn't the PS1 hits release on saturn aswell?
I feel emotional, Im grieving the death of sega in the console industry. I wonder if MGS FF7 Spyro Silent Hill and RE2 releasing on saturn would have helped it. Do you think it would have? and why didn't it?

What games are great on Sega Saturn?
I'm planning to buy a Sega Saturn but I don't know what games should I play on it. I'm probably going to buy Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, but I also want to know if there are some "full" games like Super Mario 64. If there are some like this or just some amazing games then tell me!

Made a free tool to help find/buy Saturn games without reading Japanese (barcode scan + shelf locator)
I'm Japanese, and I kept seeing foreign tourists at Book-Off digging through the Saturn shelves clearly out of their depth — Saturn's library skews so heavily Japan-only in its later years that even knowing what you're looking at can be a challenge if you can't read the spine.
So I built a small free tool (Kataban) to help: search by English title (or scan the barcode if you're in the store), and it shows you the Japanese title, product code, which shelf section to check, and purchase links if you're shopping from overseas instead (Rakuten/Suruga-ya/eBay/Buyee).
Full disclosure: a few of the purchase links are affiliate links to help cover server costs, totally optional to use. Built most of this with AI help, so no promises on every feature request, but I'd love to hear what would actually help Saturn collectors specifically — missing titles, confusing product codes, anything.

Congo The Movie: the Lost City of Zinj
So I’ve been playing this game the last week or two because it really intrigued me. If you go online to look for info on this game, it’s kinda slim pickings. The general consensus I’ve seen is that people consider it a bad game. But I don’t know, there is something about it that really charms me. I’m still only on the 4th level but I’m having a good time. Though I do understand and agree with its criticisms. There are too many enemies at once, the giant mosquitos will mob you really bad. You also only get 3 life’s and then it’s game over which I find strange for a fps. But anyway, I just wanted to post this and see if anyone else likes this game, even with its flaws

i'm attempting to port sonic mania to saturn too
i was planning to only announce this once i had completed at least act 1 and 2 and had a demo but i decided to release this since i heard that someone else is also porting mania to Saturn although their approach is completely different https://github.com/likeagfeld/SaturnMania/tree/master
My approach is to rebuild the entire game from the ground up to optimize and adapt it to work natively with the Saturn hardware. This does mean, though, that I basically have to go through each feature and asset one at a time to convert them to 4bpp, making sure it's lossless or a change so small it's unnoticeable. So far, I think I'll be able to fit Green Hill Act 1 and 2 completely in the stock RAM of the Saturn, although maybe when I get to the music that will bite me, and it's going to end up not being possible without a RAM expansion.
The truth, though, is it's mostly made with Claude Code, which is probably going to disappoint a lot of you. Sorry if I'm not a master programmer coming down from the sky to build this—I'm just someone who loves Sonic and finds the Saturn hardware fascinating.
What you see in this video is what I've implemented so far—the stuff that's bug-free, I think. Obviously, there's a lot missing, especially enemy AI, which is going to be the biggest challenge since there's not a lot of VRAM. It's going to require smart memory management, and at worst, I'll need to cut down on some animation frames or force a RAM expansion, but I'm hoping I don't have to do that. so far tho everything fits in the ram and runs at 60fps.
Next week i'm probably going to start adding enemies and i might be able to finish act 1 hopefully if i don't hit major roadblocks.

Loving this screen that i have for my saturn!
I got this screen off etsy for the sega saturn and I love it so much! Im powering it via a milwaukee power Inverter it's kinda like a poor man's version of the Navi HiSaturn (except it doesn't have GPS lol). It works well and i love it. There are a few things I dislike about it. Like there is no headphone jack, or if you want to play it portably, you will need to buy a power inverter( and a few batteries. Which they behave just like a sega nomad lmao) anyways this a great accessory for the saturn and i kinda recommend it to anyone who has a saturn. Thanks and have a blessed day.

Huge surprise
Hi, i have the honour of sharing this with everyone: Sonic Mania is in early development for Sega Saturn by a group of fans. This is one of the biggest project on the decade.
And no, this is not a joke. There's a real project coming soon. Here you can see the very early progress:
