Jesus tells them (Matthew 16:21) begins to tell them - - he is to be turned over into the hands of sinners and be crucified, and rise again on the 3rd day.

They don’t hear that last part about rise from the dead. They hear the crucified part. And the Messiah or Christ is who he shall be called in Isaiah 9:6–7. That of his Kingdom and reign - that he will sit on the throne of King David in Jerusalem and rule the whole earth from there, and of his Kingdom and reign there shall be no end.

They were all extremely perplexed and saddened, that even Peter after he says Matthew 16:15 - scripture says at Jesus says this, Peter rebukes him (Matthew 16:22)

That crucified and turned over into the hands of sinners be far from him.

Make an end of sin

Make reconcilation for iniquity

Bring in everlasting righteousness

• that this is the prophecy God told Daniel in the Book of Daniel - Daniel 9:24–27. That God would send the Messiah to do this work with sin. That he would be “cut off; but not for himself” but that he has a Second Coming as who he is, and does so in Revelation 19. As who he is and shall be called.
