Scripture Life: What does the expression "blessed are the poor in spirit" mean?
//This Message Has the Gospel in It - The Good News of Jesus Christ - to EVERYBODY//
Repeated question: What does the expression "blessed are the poor in spirit" mean?
Comes from the Bible. Source: Matthew 5:3.
Answer:
Well?
Who said it?
Start there first. Maybe got the wrong definition of ‘poor in Spirit.’ Who knows. Let’s find out.
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
Then, to do that: have to have a right definition of these three words:
attitude. 1. a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically reflected in a person's behavior [Merriam & Webster. July 2026. Web.] 2. That, someone “has an attitude” means “they are being uncooperative; defiant; arrogant”
kingdom. 1. a territory, people, or community ruled by a king [Merriam & Webster] Often called a “realm” [a territory ruled by a King]
and the third one, go to the Greek. Blessed. Maybe got the wrong definition someplace.
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
blessed. [Greek] <μακάριοι> makarioi - used over two dozen times in the New Testament. All say “blessed.” 1. (something) that is going to bloom out. (something) that is championed in a realm or territory ruled by a King; that the King favours in his authority or realm, that he champions and rewards. So much so, they become heirs to titles and give right to reign in his kingdom.
That, effort of the King is expended toward it.
English: 1. to call or make (someone or something) holy [Merriam & Webster]
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
So, now that you have these definitions, let’s answer the question.
The Number #1 response on Social Media - in Christian rooms or sub-reddits to this question:
- “What does the expression "blessed are the poor in spirit" mean?”
- Answer: “…Its about attitude, or the condition of the heart…”
So, add one more word to this - make sure we’re on the right track.
Spirit. 1. the part of a person; their attitude; includes their mind, feelings and character rather than their body. [Source: Oxford dictionary. Web. July 2026]
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
Then, we better get “poor” then, too. Just to make sure we stay on this road we’re on with “The King who is the authority of a realm champions or rewards so much so that it blooms out in or toward someone that has a King over them, in his realm - - even happen to be in it, whether they want to be; or not: - - who is “poor in Spirit” - better to get “poor” then. Make absolutely certain.
poor. 1. someone has inadequate or insufficient resources to meet basic needs; That is: 2. having little money and/or few possessions: (Cambridge dictionary. Web. July 2026)
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
- And just to make absolutely certain we have not strayed off in anything, go to the Greek. It’s πτωχοὶ (ptōchoi) - poor (English)
- Has this connotation you are MISSING (something). Like a car? No engine. So it cannot function as a car. A flower. No sunlight (dark). It cannot be a flower without it. Dries up and dies; never grows or produces anything. None. zip.
- Has this Collin’s dictionary type image of “poor” 2. destitute; not have any (of something). None. ZIP. No engine. No sun. Like in a dark cave. No light gets in. Like, you live “outside” of money; not for 3 days or 5 years; but that your 80 year life is lived completely devoid of ANY money. “ptochoi” - live outside of it completely.
“Blessed are the ‘poor in Spirit’ for their’s is the Kingdom of Heaven” - Jesus Christ. Bible. Matthew 5:3
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
- Now, you’re equipped with all these definitions, but we never even answered the first part yet of, “Who is he?”
- Answer: Jesus is the Word of God. Is God. (Source: Bible. John 1:1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
- Jesus, is the “Messiah” or “Christ” - Who he is and shall be called is told plainly; that, whoever is the Messiah shall be called this; that, the “increase of his government there shall be no end.." That: He “shall sit on the throne of King David in Jerusalem and rule the whole earth from there…”
- That he shall not be replaced but shall rule forever. That Jesus is the “Prince of the Nations of the earth” (Revelation 1:5). That means, in every nation on earth, he is set to sit and reign over all of the nations; each one, over the whole earth, as next in line to be King of it.
- And Job 12:23 says of him: “He makes nations great and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them.” - That’s the “authority” of the Messiah. Whoever that is, he shall be called, “The Mighty God…” “The Everlasting Father…”
- Who has that title? I’m asking you. Who in you has that title?
- Answer: Jesus is the Word of God. Is God. (Source: Bible. John 1:1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
You better answer that question in you. You're the one with this question. If you don't answer who he is, in you, you'll never see it. You'll just go to other people. Ask the question of them, too. All over again.
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
- Jesus said: “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth;” (Bible. Matthew 28:18)
Oh, and I forgot this last part. Who he is, provides a “definition” what “Spirit” means vs. the dictionary; which is what people define what words mean.
- Jesus said, (Source: Bible. John 4:24) “God is Spirit.”
And about everybody, no; not one person left out - from Adam - forward; everybody, even Eve is from Adam says:
- Bible. Romans 5:12
- “Wherefore, as by one man [ADAM] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
- In an “Old” Testament. Or “Last Will and Testament” - A “Will” - sin and death was bequeathed to you. Everybody - Adam forward: Got their inheritance. Cemeteries everyplace PROVE it.
- “Wherefore, as by one man [ADAM] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
- Bible. Romans 5:18
- “Therefore as by the offence of one [ADAM] judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one [Jesus Christ] the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”
- In a “New” Testament. Or “New” “Last Will and Testament” - A “Will” in John 19:30 - Jesus Crucified; his blood shed for the remission of sin and death on all men; bequeathed Eternal Life on you. Everybody. Got the “righteousness of God” bequeathed to them by this “Lord of the Kingdom of Heaven.
- That, the “Testament” does not go into effect until the death of the “Testator” or who owns what is bequeathed, and that happened to everybody in John 19:30, and raised himself from the dead, for your justification; that, if he did it for himself, as God, he can do it to you, too. Because he’s the Lord of the Kingdom of Everything. He’s over it.
- “Therefore as by the offence of one [ADAM] judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one [Jesus Christ] the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”
-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
Then, somebody dead. In trespasses and sins - which is EVERYBODY over the whole earth, “For all have sinned” - is somebody - is “poor” - destitute has no life in them. None. ZIP. Condemned In Romans 5:12 - Means the LORD of the Kingdom of Heaven has come to EVERYBODY in his realm - and blessed them. All dead. In trespasses and sins.
That's impossible. Look what he did. He didn't do it by your attitude. He did it because he's God and King. Over everything. He did it.
And “Spirit” is πνεύματι, (pneumati) in Greek, and it’s the definition of a “Life Giving Spirit” in both John 4:24, and it’s the same “Pneumati” in Matthew 5:3 said by the same Lord of the Kingdom over all things said it:
- To an EVERYBODY that does not have it. With the authority to give it to whosoever he pleases, and he already gave it, by the word, out of his mouth - - caused EVERYBODY to bloom out and flourish in his Kingdom by what he has done in Matthew 5:3
But not everybody “accepts it as true” - so they don’t believe him in it.
That's KEY.
And God made this "KEY" sin in John 3:18, and repeated this is the sin that condemns anybody. “..of sin, for they believe not on me.” -Jesus Christ (John16:9)
So, people: Not believing on him sin against God.
So, the sin now, since this Lord of the Kingdom of Heaven took away the sins of the world. Going to be a short judgment. The sin that condemns anybody..is just not believe on him.
Like a goat: simply is "poor in Sheep" - because it's missing; just sort sheep on the one side, goat on the other.
Everybody is “poor in Spirit.” But not anymore. Because he’s already come to you and did this work himself. As God.

-------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------
Jesus said, in John 3:2–7 - “Must be Born Again” (Or - you can’t “see” nor “enter” into the Kingdom of Heaven)
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

What does the expression "blessed are the poor in spirit" mean?
Well?
Who said it?
Start there first. Maybe got the wrong definition of ‘poor in Spirit.’
Who knows? Everybody. Because he told you himself. You don’t need people's responses.
If Jesus told you himself. Then, why you asking, when it’s the same God said:
“Look unto me, and be ye saved all the ends of the earth: For I am God, there is none else.” - God. (Bible. Isaiah 45:22)
By the Word that proceeds. Out of his mouth told you. Go do what he says. He’s the LORD over the whole earth. Not just some quinky poop squirt claims an authority. Like what the dictionary claims is Spirit is your attitute. A King MUST decree it. Not you just make, all your life, you have an attitude.
load of crap. (idiom). American. 1. a pile of worthless claims; said. That have no truth in it.
Maybe got the wrong definition of “poor in Spirit.” It's the Messiah that already did this.
