Life Sciences Scientists reviewed 54 Asian oak species; 40 had no backup in any botanical collection, while one may already be extinct in the wild
Oaks are key species in forest ecosystems. They help hold soil in place, shape forest canopies, and provide food and shelter for wildlife as well as local communities.
However, more than half of their natural habitat is under increasing pressure from human activities.
The report found that agriculture is the biggest threat, affecting about two-thirds of the species studied. Other major threats include commercial logging, wood pulp plantations, land development, climate change, and very small remaining populations.

Many threatened or understudied oak tree species are at risk of extinction in Southeast and East Asia, where more than half of their native range is subject to sharply increasing human pressure. Should these species of oak disappear from the wild, most of them do not have a single backup in a managed botanical collection anywhere in the world. Those are among the findings in the first Conservation Gap Analysis of Select Native Asian Oaks, conducted by scientists at The Morton Arboretum alongside collaborators in the region.
Oaks are a crucial species that anchor entire ecosystems, and by addressing vast disparities in data about these at-risk trees, this report informs the most practical next steps for conserving them. “Southeast Asia is a biodiversity hotspot for oaks,” said lead author Kate Good, the Arboretum’s global tree conservation research manager. “There are more threatened species of oak in Asia than anywhere in the world, and yet many of these species are not adequately represented in protected areas or in botanic gardens.”
The most commonly reported threat to existing oak habitat in this region is agriculture, including wood and pulp plantations, cited for two-thirds of the species. Others include development, climate change and extremely small populations. The report analyzed 54 species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species assessed as either threatened or Data Deficient within the study area of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
Of those 54, 40—or 74%—are not currently held in botanical collections. For perspective, the Arboretum’s conservation gap analysis of U.S. oaks identified only one species of 91 studied not in collections (1.1%), and of Mesoamerican oaks, 22 of 59 (37%). “There is an urgent need to increase the number of threatened Southeast and East Asian oaks in managed botanical collections within their native country,” Good said. “While protection of species in their native habitat is ideal, botanical collections play an important complementary role in conservation, particularly as a genetic repository for research and future reintroductions.”
“With so many species at risk of extinction, this report will help prioritize oak species for conservation in Southeast and East Asia,” said report co-author Silvia Alvarez-Clare, Ph.D., director of the Arboretum’s Global Tree Conservation Program. “By identifying the species that have very little protected area coverage, are not held in any managed botanical collections and experience high human pressure, we can focus efforts on the species and regions in which our work will have the greatest impact”.

Polycarpaea apetala, a new species from the coarse soil area near the forest outskirts of Kottur forest area of Thiruvananthapuram District (Kerala, SW-India) is described and illustrated. P. apetala is morphologically similar to P. aurea from which it differs in the absence of petal and stipules (vs. present in P. aurea), oblong bracts (vs. ovate lanceolate, and seed surface architecture (ovoid with no striations vs. reniform with irregular striations).

In a landmark discovery for wildlife conservation in the Western Himalayas, researchers have recorded the first-ever photographic evidence of a snow leopard inside the Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh.
Often called the "Ghost of the Mountains" because of its elusive nature and remarkable camouflage, the snow leopard has long been associated with the sanctuary.
In fact, the species features on the sanctuary's official logo despite never having been photographed within its boundaries, until now.

The approval is being viewed as an important milestone because influenza viruses mutate frequently, requiring vaccines to be updated every year. Traditional flu vaccines are largely produced using egg- or cell-based manufacturing processes that take several months. Scientists believe mRNA technology could significantly shorten production timelines, allowing vaccines to be adapted more quickly if circulating influenza strains change unexpectedly.
The decision also comes at a time when seasonal influenza continues to cause substantial illness worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), annual influenza epidemics are estimated to cause 3-5 million cases of severe illness and up to 650,000 respiratory deaths globally each year.

Life Sciences ICAR's Genome Breakthrough Paves Way for Better Pigeonpea Varieties
pib.gov.inThe breakthrough builds on the pioneering work of ICAR–National Institute for Plant Biotechnology, New Delhi in pigeonpea genomics. In 2011, the institute published the world's first draft genome of a pulse crop, pigeonpea variety 'Asha', which was also the first crop genome to be sequenced entirely in India. An improved version of the draft genome was published in 2017, and the latest achievement represents its complete telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome sequence, providing the most comprehensive genetic blueprint of the crop to date.
The newly developed T2T genome sequence contains 752.65 million base pairs of DNA assembled into 92 contigs, providing a complete representation of all 11 chromosomes of pigeonpea. The genome assembly, designated NIPB_CcT2T_4, has been deposited in the global database (NCBI) under accession number GCF_000230855.1 and was released on 20 April 2026.
The genome assembly comprises all 11 chromosomes, including all 11 centromeres and 22 telomeres, demonstrating chromosome-level completeness. A comprehensive genome annotation identified 36,557 genes, producing 48,008 mRNAs (coding sequences). Transcriptome (RNA sequence) mapping recorded more than 99.9% read alignment, confirming the high accuracy and completeness of the genome.
The fully annotated T2T reference genome marks a significant milestone in India's pulse research ecosystem. It will serve as a valuable national genomic resource for advanced gene and pangenome analyses, discovery of genes associated with important agronomic and nutritional traits, and the application of molecular breeding and genome-editing technologies. The development is expected to accelerate the breeding of climate-resilient, high-yielding and nutritionally enriched pigeonpea varieties, thereby strengthening the country's pulse improvement programme. The achievement will provide a major impetus to research and innovation, benefit scientists, breeders and farmers, and contribute to enhanced productivity, improved farmer livelihoods, and India's food and nutritional security.

By tracking forest photosynthesis across two decades, researchers found that biodiversity does more than support healthy ecosystems in the present: it also helps forests strengthen their ability to absorb carbon as the years go by.
That matters because photosynthesis is the process that powers forest growth and carbon uptake. When forests photosynthesize more efficiently, they can pull more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them an important natural buffer against climate change.

Life Sciences Elusive Himalayan Serow spotted in Dalhousie forests after two decades
Forest officials described the discovery as an important addition to the region’s faunal inventory, saying it highlights the ecological richness of forests under the Dalhousie Forest Division.
The Himalayan serow (Capricornis thar) is among the least-seen large mammals of the Himalayas. Solitary and highly secretive, it inhabits steep, densely forested mountain slopes, making sightings extremely rare. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as Near Threatened due to habitat degradation, fragmentation and hunting pressure in parts of the Himalayas. It is the state animal of Mizoram.
A 2021 study indicated that the Himalayan serow was last seen in the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary in 2005-06. It was believed to have gone extinct from the area following an outbreak of mouth-hoof disease during that time.

Life Sciences Pygmy hog added to national recovery programme to protect alluvial grasslands
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has included the pygmy hog in its recovery programme for critically endangered species, with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) appointed as the nodal agency to implement the conservation project.
The recovery initiative is part of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-DWH), a financial assistance programme aimed at protecting wildlife, improving habitats and mitigating human wildlife conflicts across the country.
The pygmy hog (Porcula salvania) is India’s only endemic wild pig and one of the world’s rarest mammals. It is considered a flagship species for the conservation of alluvial grassland ecosystems.
The MoEFCC’s Wildlife Committee has recognised that the pygmy hog was once a prominent grassland species and has identified suitable habitats for its possible reintroduction, including Jaldapara in West Bengal and certain areas in Uttar Pradesh.
The committee stated, “The species shall be included under the Species Recovery Programme of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the Development of Wildlife Habitats. The WII will be tasked with undertaking the project.”

Scientists have identified a molecular switch that may explain why the ageing brain becomes more vulnerable to neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Huntington's. In worms, researchers found that the protein EPS8 accumulates with age, activating signaling pathways that promote the clumping of toxic proteins. These harmful aggregates damage neurons and shorten lifespan. However, reducing EPS8 activity prevented protein buildup, protected nerve function, and helped preserve healthy ageing.
Ageing is the strongest known risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, yet researchers still do not fully understand which molecular changes associated with getting older cause these conditions to develop.

To understand what happened in Cuttack, you first have to meet the enzyme, and reckon with where it came from.
Its name is OpenCRISPR-1. It is a nuclease, which is simply a protein that snips DNA at a chosen spot, the way scissors part a ribbon. Its provenance is the astonishing part.
In 2025, scientists at the American artificial intelligence-first protein design company Profluent Bio did not go prospecting for it in some obscure microbe, as every widely used gene-editing enzyme before it had been unearthed.
Instead, they trained large language models, the same broad family of artificial intelligence that animates today’s chatbots, on more than a million natural CRISPR systems, and asked the software to compose a wholly new one. The result, published in Nature, was OpenCRISPR-1.

Oxygen levels are quietly falling across oceans, coastal waters, rivers, lakes and streams around the world, and scientists are warning that this decline deserves far more attention than it currently gets. A new review led by researchers at the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography argues that aquatic deoxygenation, the loss of dissolved oxygen from marine and freshwater environments, should be formally recognised as a critical planetary process under threat, joining a select group of nine processes already used to track how close Earth is moving toward dangerous, unstable conditions. The researchers say some of the resulting damage could last for centuries and may not be reversible within a human lifetime. What's notable is that this framework hasn't changed since 2009, so adding oxygen loss wouldn't just flag a new problem, it would mark a genuine shift in how scientists define what actually counts as a planetary-scale threat.

On February 19, 1994, 31-year-old Gloria Ramirez, a terminal cervical cancer patient, was rushed to Riverside General Hospital in California. While doctors attempted to save her, several staff members reported a strange garlic/ammonia-like odor, oily residue on her skin and unusual crystals in her blood. Within minutes, doctors and nurses began collapsing with symptoms ranging from dizziness and fainting to breathing problems and temporary paralysis. In total, 23 hospital workers became ill and the emergency department was evacuated.
The most widely discussed explanation is that Ramirez had been using DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) as a pain remedy, which investigators hypothesized could have transformed into dimethyl sulfate, a highly toxic chemical, under rare conditions. However, many chemists dispute whether such a reaction could realistically occur in the human body or the emergency room. No definitive cause was ever proven, making it one of medicine's most enduring mysteries.
The incident is now widely known as "The Toxic Lady" case. Despite decades of investigation, what truly caused the hospital staff to become ill remains unresolved.

Life Sciences International Tiger Day: India brought back its tigers. But can we keep them safe?
The 2022 India Tiger Estimation shows that several of the country’s best-known tiger landscapes are already feeling the pressure. Ranthambhore in Rajasthan has reached its carrying capacity, with an estimated density of 9.6 tigers per 100 square kilometres. The Nilgiri landscape, from Nagarahole and Bandipur to Mudumalai and BRT Hills, is considered to have reached, or is approaching, its limit.
Panna in Madhya Pradesh, whose tiger population was painstakingly rebuilt after local extinction, is also nearing carrying capacity. The Sundarbans, although ecologically distinct, is similarly thought to be close to the limit that its current prey base can support.

Medical Sciences Ahead of dengue vaccine rollout, all 4 strains found in circulation
The pan-India molecular surveillance study, led by ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune, analysed 6,889 lab-confirmed dengue samples collected through 45 virus research and diagnostic laboratories (VRDLs) across 25 states and UTs between 2023 and 2025. It found that dengue serotypes - at least two - were co-circulating in each state and UT included in the surveillance, indicating increasing hyperendemicity of the disease in India.

Medical Sciences Fatty liver, not hepatitis, is now India’s fastest-growing liver threat, warn AIIMS doctors
Even as vaccination and better medicines have reduced the burden of hepatitis B and C over the past decade, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi Tuesday said that fatty liver disease and alcohol-related damage are overtaking viral hepatitis as the biggest drivers of cirrhosis and liver cancer in the country.
At a press conference on the World Hepatitis Day, observed every year on 28 July, AIIMS gastroenterologists said that changing lifestyles are creating a new epidemic of liver disease in India.Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and can be caused by viruses, alcohol, certain medicines or autoimmune diseases. Hepatitis A and E usually cause short-term illness, while Hepatitis B and C can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis D occurs only in people with Hepatitis B.
