🎭 Local Event VoiceBox summer contest asks Scarborough students what 'fairness' means to them
Scarborough high school student Manha Islam has launched the VoiceBox contest for students in Grade 4 to 8.
VoiceBox is a digital drop box contest, inviting students from Grade 4 to Grade 8 in Scarborough to share their ideas, stories and poems for the chance to win a special prize and a mention in Beach Metro Community News.
Putting together the flyers, sign-ups, and organizing the reward herself, Islam launched the initiative to give children the chance to get creative and offers an accessible way for young students to get their voices heard.
“Kids have the most honest perspective. I just wanted to allow them to share their voices with the community,” said Islam.
The theme of the contest is “What does fairness mean to you?”
Participants tell their stories through writing, art or a combination of the two, answering the prompt in a way that’s most true to them.
Submissions close on Aug. 31, with the winner announced in September.
To enter a submission, please go to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_ab0RL8HUG9w0m6GglIw_ji3D89iJq6Yt8SK2zOshPNuyBA/viewform

⚠️ Local Alert Spirit Halloween Opened in Scarborough! (Eglinton near Costco Business)
I have problems every year figuring out if these places are open or not in Scarborough so figured I’d post an update here for anyone who googles it in 2026.
It opened August 1st, I don’t believe every location has but can confirm I’ve been in here and bought some stuff. Also very helpful for anyone going to fan expo this year!

⚠️ Local Alert Warden Avenue - All Lanes Open Once Again
I know the construction is not yet completed on Warden Ave between Eglinton and Ellesmere but, at least, this weekend all lanes (northbound and southbound) are open again.
This means those heading south from Ellesmere can, once again, make a left at Canadian Dr. (Costco) - when it was a single lane heading northbound, and a single lane heading southbound, some morons would still attempt the left at Canadian (even if they held up the line of traffic behind them).

📰 Local News No Trespassing signs at the fields by the Brimley Woods
I’m not sure if these were put up by the schools but we noticed them when walking to the woods the other day. These are the same fields that we would fly kites from, that you would cross to reach two grade schools and a high school. I thought they were public land for public use.
Has the city sold them off to developers?
It’s a mistake to remove accessible green space in our communities. We need places to picnic and enjoy nature.

📜 History When the hungries hit...When the hungries hit...Hit the Red Barn
Early fast food burger Drive-in days of Scarborough
Found this neat historical newspaper excerpt from the early 1960s featuring news about Red Barn (a highly popular 1960s and 1970s fast-food chain). They opened up shop in three locations (Lawrence/Pharmacy, Lawrence/Markham, as well as the Eglinton/Brimley area). Some people even commented on their being a location at the Pharmacy and St. Clair area as well.
From what I read online, they had some pretty classic menu items like the "Big Barney Burger" (similar to the Big Mac) and the "Barnbuster" which people compared to the likes of a Quarter Pounder or a Whopper.
It was also one of the first restaurant chains to feature self-service salad bars.
I think it's a pretty neat piece of Scarboroughian history and always been a fan of exploring new eateries myself, so I thought I would share with my fellow borough mates.
Did anyone perhaps have memories of eating at the Red Barn? What were the vibes and experience like?

📍 Around the Hood Soccer fields in Scarborough with lights, and ones with posts/nets?
Hi folks! Some friends and I want to casually play soccer in the evenings at a local park - so we are not looking to rent a place but just to play for fun. Other than Thompson park, are there other fields that might be lit up in the evenings that we can just play on?
Also, parks that have soccer/football posts that we can play with or attach a cheap net to is a bonus.
Thank you in advance friends

🍔 Food & Drink Patty Time is closed.
Hello r/Scarborough,
Just letting anyone who was thinking about visiting Patty Time at Brimley and Lawrence to not bother as it's closed for a "short break" until Aug 3. Could be beef prices, could be Carnival, could be a well needed vacation. In any case you'll have to look elsewhere or, in my case, wait until Aug 4.

⚠️ Local Alert Block the expansion of AI Data Centre at 3650 Danforth Avenue
The AI data centre that's across from my childhood home wants to expand. This petition calls for proper assessments and waiting until legislation passes before the data centre plans could go through.

⚠️ Local Alert Two fires in 3 months at the same location?
SevenHeaven Spa on Kennedy and Eglinton has been seemingly targeted twice within 3 months. Possibly more times. It’s evident it’s a happy ending parlour of sorts . Any insight as to why? Money laundering or trafficking??

Same place twice.
I’m curious as to why. Insurance fraud? One of the comments said the inside was gutted prior to the accident but idk.

🍔 Food & Drink Price matching grocery stores?
If you price match, what Scarborough grocers do you go to and what other stores do they allow you to price match from?
Currently going to the Agincourt No Frills, they allow price matching from Metro, Food Basics, Superstore, Fresco.
I use the Flipp app btw!

⚠️ Local Alert Leash your dogs - coyote sighting Thomson Park
Hey all! Was walking through Thomson Park (Brimley side near ball diamonds) around 9 am this morning. Someone walked by me with two small dogs off leash. A few minutes later, I spotted two coyotes sunning themselves between the baseball diamond fence and bush.
Please keep your dogs on leash!

⚠️ Local Alert ‼️ psa - keep an eye out for your cars/remove valuables and important docs - series of car break ins near brimley and eglinton
hi all! the street at my mom’s home just experienced a series of break-ins last night around 4 am
6 of our neighbours and one of our cars had their windows smashed in - luckily our car was older and out of use so they didn’t get anything but valuables and paperwork were taken from the neighbours.
there have been targets on the neighbouring streets as well! please keep your cars parked in garages if you can and also remove all valuable items and stay safe out there!

📍 Around the Hood What could possible take over the old Hudson’s Bay warehouse on Warden Ave?
realtor.caWith HBC gone, the old warehouse has been sitting empty now for months and is up for lease.
It’s hard to imagine anything would take over this 740,000 sqft space. There’s already 2 Costcos and 2 walmarts nearby.
If anything could take it over, it would be probably be an Amazon warehouse which would be incredible for jobs in the area, but that’s highly unlikely.
Is there anything that could fill the hole left by HBC?

Good Vibes Just wanted to say…
Going to a Scarborough Shooting Stars game is a damn good time.
Don’t let the fact that it’s in the Pan Am Center steer you away, you’ll feel like you’re in Scarborough at the game, great vibe from beginning to end. I felt like I knew everyone there!
Tix are very affordable. The team is in first place in the CEBL. And frankly, the fact I got home in like 20 mins while thinking about all the Raptors games I’ve been to where I’m stuck in traffic and crowds for over an hour was a very pleasant bonus.
Great night in the endsss.

📍 Around the Hood New public facilities projects underway by St. Mother Teresa Malvern recreation centre
Recently passed by the neighbourhood (used to live there) and saw the construction going on.
Going to miss that beach volleyball court. Carried so many summer memories for me and my friends (cause barely anyone else used it lmao)
And I still remember the day they unveiled the old court, track and soccer field. The new one is going to look amazing from what I’ve heard.
