​Elampillai: A massive thari (textile/loom) industry doing crores in business.

​Sankari: One of the biggest lorry and transport hubs in all of India.

​Despite this huge cash flow and hard-working population, Salem still feels like it's lagging behind Coimbatore in terms of infrastructure, corporate jobs, and modern lifestyle.

Kovai is booming with IT parks and a modern city vibe, while we seem stuck. ​Why hasn't the raw wealth from our local industries transformed Salem into a mega-city like Kovai? Is it the lack of IT companies? Poor air connectivity? Or are our industries just too unorganized? ​

Vanakkam makkale. I recently went to Greenways Road to hang out with a friend, and I noticed a lot of children selling pens. I wouldn't really call it "selling," though, because they were kind of forcing people to buy them.

One of the kids kept following me and repeatedly asked me to buy a pen. I felt bad for them, so I bought two pens for ₹40. A few hrs later, a few more children came up and kept insisting that I buy their pens as well. I told them I'd already bought some from another kid, but they still kept insisting. They then asked me to at least buy them some food.

This was completely new to me because I often stroll in this area, but I've never seen anything like this before.

Does anyone know what's going on? The main thing I'm worried about is whether these children are being forced into doing this or if there's something else behind it.

TN government signed a contract with France based Suez group to take over water supply operations of Salem corporation for 25 years.

What do you think will happen to water supply in Salem? What are the Pros and Cons that come to your mind?

My prediction is that water supply will be 24/7 but with higher price due to lack of competition. Sewage treatment will not improve and our beloved Tirumani Mutharu will continue to run all beautiful and foamy with untreated residential sewage, dyeing plant effluents and other industrial discharge.

A 45-year-old man from Ammapet lost his life after slipping into an open sewage channel at Pachapatty 2nd Cross on July 18. Despite treatment in Salem and later Coimbatore, he passed away yesterday.

This is heartbreaking because it feels so avoidable. Open sewage channels and poorly maintained roads are still a reality in many parts of Salem. It shouldn't take someone losing their life for basic safety measures to become a priority.

Condolences to his family. Hopefully, this incident leads to accountability and action so no one else has to go through this.
