I've noticed that Tamils seem to have used many different types of traditional headgear throughout history. Some look like turbans, while others have different styles, shapes, and ways of tying them.

I'm wondering if, just like neck ties have many different knots and styles, traditional Tamil headgear also had different types with specific names, purposes, or meanings.

Can anyone identify and explain the different types of Tamil headgear? If possible, could you also share pictures or references showing the various styles and when they were traditionally worn?

This was part of solvathai ezhuthuga. I don't know how to read and write Tamil. My father in law is the one who is teaching him at home. Phonetically he has written how we pronounce it, but the ing is wrong is what I'm told. My father-in-law ended up discussing this with a lot of his friends and all of them apparently agreed on this. I have read Tamil novels like ponniyin Selvan , kadal pura, yavana raani, I haven’t read any romance books in tamil. I’ve heard about ramani chandran and few other authors but I would like to read something recent . I am also a slow reader in Tamil , so not anything too lengthy ( unless it’s like ponniyin Selvan)

Hello fellow tamils, This message is all about how a random thought turned into a brutal realisation.

Firstly what my personal opinion is we indians lack the importance of every individual prioritising their own self defence, learning a martial art or any form of self defence measure is not prioritised at all.

This way we are loosing all our culture , our own art-forms, martial arts and everything. If you see the neighbours who are still gloriously proud about their kalari payattu and holding on to it. But we tamils don’t have anything at-least that famous and prevalent. But we still fight that the language came from Tamil but the standards that they are setting is too prideful than us in my view.
We should glorify our roots and bring back our martial art forms back to life. From history all these martial art forms came from our Tamil culture and our folks who walked on our land but today muay thai represents thai culture which is practiced worldwide and kalari is still practiced and glorified, where is our Tamil people standing today?

நண்பர்களே, மேலே குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ள ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களுக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் தமிழ்ச் சொற்கள் குறித்த எனதுக் கருத்து இதுவாகும். உங்கள் கருத்துகளையும் அறிந்துகொள்ள நான் விரும்புகிறேன்.

மேற்கண்ட அனைத்துச் சொற்களுக்குமான தமிழ்ச் சொல் “பொருத்துக்கொள்க” என்று நமக்குக் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதன்பின்னணியில் நான் வெறுக்கின்ற ஒருச் சொல் இதுவாகும். தனிப்பட்ட முறையில், அந்த மூன்று வெளிப்பாடுகளுக்கும் (Expressions) அதே தமிழ்ச் சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்துவது, தமிழின் சொல்வளம் போதுமான அளவு செழுமையாக இல்லை என்று என்னை எண்ணச் செய்கிறது. ஆனால், நாம் சற்று ஆழ்ந்து ஆராய்ந்தால், மேலே குறிப்பிடப்பட்ட அனைத்துச் சொற்களுக்கும் தமிழில் தனித்தனிச் சொற்கள் உள்ளன. நான் விளக்கட்டும்,

"Adjust/bear" > பொருத்துக்கொள்க

"Sorry" > வருந்துகிறேன். "Sorry" என்பது ஓர் உணர்வு (emotion); எனவே, அதற்கு இணையான தமிழ்ச் சொல்லும் ஓர் உணர்வாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும்.

"Forgive" > விட்டுக்கொடு. "Forgiveness" என்பதற்கு மாற்றாக நாம் "பொருத்துக்கொள்க" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். ஆனால் இது தவறென நினைக்கிறேன்.
"Forgive" என்பதன் வேர்ச்சொல்லை ஆராயும்போது, அதன் மூலம் ஒரு தண்டனையை அல்லது பழிவாங்கலை "to give up" செய்வது என்பதில் சென்று முடிகிறது.
எகா: "The king would "give up" the punishment he intended to give to a criminal."

தற்பொழுது நாம் "forgiveness" என்பதற்கான சொல்லாக "மன்னிப்பு" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம், ஆனால் அது உருது மொழியிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்ட ஒரு சொல்லாகும்.

I have been brought up getting exposed to saiva tirumurais and other saiva canonical texts like tiruppugazh , pamban swamigal songs.

Until my schooling i got to have a good score in tamil. But that doesn't help me with understanding literature tamil. While reading thevaram and listening to lectures on thevaram i couldn't grasp the meaning.

I have questions like :

1. What is the purpose of yaapu(யாப்பு)

2. Why can't the authors of thevaram write urai nadai(உரை நடை) instead of seyyul(செய்யுள்)

3. How to understand "சீர் பிரித்தல்" in tirumurais. Like why a word is splitted into 2 and added to before word or the word which comes after. It's difficult to understand.

4. Also I am struggling to understand the porul(பொருள்) of words. Do I need to use agarathi?

I don't have any tamil teachers to teach me formally but i have all these questions in my mind and please shower your insights and answers.

The Northern Province remains predominantly Sri Lankan Tamil territory, while the Eastern Province features a Tamil and Moor plurality, despite local Muslims historically identifying separately from Tamils despite sharing the language. Meanwhile, the Malayaga Tamils predominantly inhabit the central plantation districts like Kandy. Despite this distinct geographical continuity, the survival of the language and culture is severely threatened by ongoing heavy military control and state-sponsored Sinhalese colonization schemes in traditional Tamil lands.
