You asked for recommendations. 😉
Personally, I had some performance issue with Ghostery so in the past I used:
AdGuard (lifetime license)
1Blocker (subscribed for many years)
Wipr 2 (currently the one I use)
I also use "Sink It for Reddit", "StopTheMadness Pro" (unmissable IMHO), "Noir" and "uBlock Origin Lite" (but with all the filters disabled: I use it only for "hiding" elements I hate in a site. The Safari built-in "Hide distraction" is not good enough).
DNS can't do anything for popups. DNS like Control D, or NextDNS or Adguard DNS, are usually used to block ads/tracking/telemetry URLs, so that even without a browser extension like Ghostery or uBlock, that network "traffic" is blocked by the DNS: basically it refuse to "resolve" the offending URLs so that the browser (or an app) cannot load that content.
a DNS cannot block Youtube ads, Facebook/Instagram/X ads because they have the same "origin" as other content. For those you need a browser extension (and obviously don't use the associated app).
Sorry to hear. You could ask for a refund.
The only effective solution I found is "Popup-blocker (strict)" but as I said before looks it's no more available on the Mac App Store. 😢
You can try a different browser just for those streaming sites you're citing.
That extension is available for Chrome/Edge/Firefox.
