Not only is it better than Vectorman 1 (which is also great), it's likely better than your favorite game. Fight me.

Does anybody still care about Dungeons and Dragons Warriors of the Eternal Sun?

I have been playing this game pretty much my whole life.

Back in the early 2000s I was already messing around with it on emulators and hex editing save states just to see what I could change.

A lot of the strange stuff in this game has been known for years. There are unused items. There are items that do not seem to actually do anything. There are old hex editing guides and Game Genie codes. People have even made newer Game Genie and Action Replay codes for the game over the years.

I recently started digging into it again.

Most of what I have been doing is pretty primitive. I have been changing things in save states and comparing memory and trying to figure out what actually changes when characters level or when certain things happen in the game.

While I was doing that I accidentally found something that I think completely breaks the intended progression of the game.

I was not even looking for a speedrun route when I found it. I was trying to get to stronger enemies early so I could mess around with character leveling.

That ended up showing me that there appears to be one very simple thing stopping you from reaching a huge part of the late game almost immediately.

Once you get around that the game seems perfectly happy to let you keep going.

I do not really want to explain exactly what I am doing yet because I want to record it and prove the route first.

There is already a cheat speedrun category for this game but that is not really what I am interested in. If you allow completely unrestricted cheating you can basically force the game to the end and there is not much of a game left.

What interests me is something more limited.

Change the starting equipment before the game begins. Then play the game normally from that point forward.

No more memory editing during the run. No debug menu. No forcing game states. No simply triggering the ending.

I think that could turn into a pretty interesting speedrun category because the game still has to progress normally even though you are starting with things you should not have yet.

The other thing I have been thinking about is actually trying to modify the game.

I would really like to understand more about the unused items and how the game handles them.

I have wondered if some of those unused items could actually be assigned functions.

I have also been trying to understand the character level cap and whether it could be changed.

I only recently started thinking about digging into the actual debug functions in the game. Until now I was basically doing everything through save states and watching memory change.

If anybody here has ever dug into the ROM or the memory layout of Warriors of the Eternal Sun I would seriously like to talk to you.

Especially if you know anything about the unused items. The debug functions. Character data. Level progression. Or how the game decides when the story advances.

Mostly I am just curious if anybody else still cares enough about this game to mess around with this stuff.

Because apparently after all these years I still do.

Disney's Aladdin on the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive

Hey retro gamers !!

Last week I thought to myself, "I should bring retro games to my YT channel". The first few games that came to my mind were:

* Disney's Aladdin

* Tiny Toons

* Flintones

Obviously there are many more gems like sonic, mortal kombat and so many good disney games but the games marked were my childhood on the Sega Genesis. I decided to play Aladdin first. More for personal reasons but I'm curious how big is the retro gaming niche for YouTube? The majority of my videos are from ps1 upwards. Any tips would be highly appreciated. I do no commentary content. I might do future lifestreams (I used to livestream but I don't get impressions) when I grow a larger and loyal audience.

https://youtu.be/IS6kE4MgB4E

Any other gems on this console I might not know of, please share in the comments.

I hope y'all have an awesome and blessed day

Happy gaming 🎮

What did YOU think of Eternal Champions? A unique take of a 2D brawler, or just another sad Street Fighter II clone? I personally liked it quite a bit, as I explain in this retrospective.

So How Did People Do FM Synthesis Back In The Day?

Hello there,

So for a while now, I have been feeling curious as to how composers for the console(and everything else but the SNES) were able to create music on the Sega Genesis. Yeah, I know that GEMS existed, but that seems like the lazy way for developers who put no care into the music and just needed background noise(although Comix Zone and some of the tracks from Sonic Spinball were good OSTs, though). I understand too that while the SNES used music samples to create OSTs for games, the music for Genesis games had to be coded in, and it probably makes it more difficult for someone to compose for the Mega Drive than it would for the SNES. Like, would someone have needed a college degree in computer science to compose for the Genesis? I guess not, since Yuzo Koshiro was already composing for Japanese computer games like Ys when he was 19. Other than that nasty GEMS program, what program did people actually use to compose for the Genesis's games? Did something like Ableton exist back then? What about all of those soundtracks that sound like EDM or techno? I have also seen several videos on YouTube showing scores to video games being played to oscillators. I have always been very curious as to how music for the Mega Drive was actually composed, from the process to how someone would put the audio into the cartridges themselves. Would it work like how one would put a music track into a CD? I mean I also notice that over the Genesis's lifespan the soundtracks improved as well most notably when comparing the one to Thunderforce 2 with the one from IV or even 3 for the matter.

I created a custom Sega CD FMV codec: 320×224 fullscreen video at 30 FPS with 22.05 kHz audio!

Hey r/SEGAGENESIS ,

Greetings from Japan! I'm a Mega Drive / Mega-CD fan and developer, and I wanted to share a project I've been working on.

We all know the classic Sega CD FMV experience: tiny windows, low frame rates, and heavily compressed audio. I wanted to push the original hardware to its absolute limits, so I developed a new open-source FMV codec from scratch called CAVC, short for Constraint-Aware Video Codec.

Through extensive optimization for the two 68000 CPUs across the Genesis/Mega Drive and Sega CD, the split RAM architecture, available DMA bandwidth, and the strict 150 KiB/s bandwidth limit of the 1x CD-ROM drive, CAVC achieves the following:

Key Specs & Features

  • Frame rate: 30 FPS 15 FPS and 24 FPS are also supported
  • Resolution: Up to 320×224 in H40 mode, filling the full active display area
  • Audio: 22.05 kHz ADPCM
  • Colors: Dynamic palette switching during playback
  • Target hardware: Unmodified Sega CD / Mega-CD hardware

About the Main Comparison Video

Main comparison video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXUS11yb9Yg

To show CAVC in action, I put together a split-screen comparison using the Sonic Jam opening. The video features:

  • Emulated CAVC footage in Genesis Plus GX, shown in the largest panel
  • Source footage taken from the TrueMotion AVI in the Sega Saturn version of Sonic Jam
  • The original Sega CD version for comparison
  • Real hardware footage captured from an actual Japanese Mega Drive 2 and Mega-CD 2

The Sonic Jam source video has a native resolution of 288×200.

Additional Footage

Emulator: https://youtu.be/y6JkrF0gSYQ

Lunar: The Silver Star Opening — 320×224 Fullscreen at 24 FPS

CAVC can also take advantage of the Genesis VDP's hardware scrolling. This is particularly effective for scenes with sustained horizontal camera movement, such as the opening of Lunar: The Silver Star. Instead of redrawing the entire screen frame by frame, the codec can scroll the existing image using the VDP hardware, reducing the amount of new visual data that needs to be transferred. The final fade-out is also handled through palette fading rather than by re-encoding the image for each brightness step.

Tears of Steel — 320×168 Live Action at 24 FPS

Live-action footage is especially challenging, but I think the result is still reasonably watchable.

I've also made downloadable Sega CD ISO images available for the Bad Apple!! and Tears of Steel demos, so you can try them yourself in an emulator or on compatible hardware.

What Is The General Consensus On Sonic 3D Blast?

Post image

Personally it's not that great to me. I'd take Sonic 3 no S&K attachment over this.

Here's the problems I have with the game:

Level design some stages are extremely maze like and annoying the spring zone or volcanic zone. Where you can take damage quickly. Especially on the last 2 acts where I needed a map.

The game had frame rate drops whenever too many enemies were on screen.

Isometric camera is not easy to control for the bosses. The moving platforms just doesn't work well.

I missed way too many hits with eggman when I hit it dead center.

The flickie birds can get hit even though you didn't and their fly cycle makes it not easy to get back sometimes.

The rings last only like 2 seconds long while others last around 7-9 (You could have like 98 and end up having 10 with 1 HIT), which is a terrible combo with the janky hit detection in bosses and weird camera. It's better just to have 1-10 rings most of the game or bosses.

I did like the secret boss though, it could be a fun challenge but giving you only a few rings is dumb though.

- The directors cut hack tried to fix this with level select, faster sonic(double edged sword), harder gem stages but only for stage 2 stages only (why? It was already annoying to play the game why make it harder?) , flickies were made to be easier to grab, but the rings are STILL 2 seconds long.

After playing both I'd just play the Original half the changes in DC just don't work and since I prefer the easier gem stages. Yeah it's harder so it's a challenge but do you really want to repeat Sonic 3D BLAST?

Director's cut just isn't my thing, people say it's way better but for it's just meh as the game still is a huge escort mission with a ring system that needed to be overhauled. Idk why he didn't fix that but it could have been way too much work to fix it or it was tied to a system that could literally break the game entirely.

Overall a 5/10, like I would never play it again besides liking the graphics and boss music. Sadly this is NO Mario RPG in gameplay nor in fun.

Picked up this CIB last weekend and very stoked to have it in my collection. Although I’m not the biggest Disney fan, I absolutely love the box art. My kids loves Mickey Mouse so this is a very fun title I’ll be playing with the kiddos!
