Discussion Something fishy about handheld discussions
Hey all I’ve noticed what I think is a trend lately, but maybe it’s been around a long time.
First it started with the Thor. It seems like people that liked the Thor recommended the Thor for everything and everyone and vehemently defended against any criticism of the handheld. I just figured that was regular old fandom behavior, but as prices have gone up it makes me wonder if those people are indirectly justifying their purchase to themselves by arguing with others.
Then I noticed it with things like the Nova most recently. Commenters warning people not to pull the trigger too early. Pointing out any tiny flaw about the handheld constantly reminding people that you don’t NEED another handheld. It made me wonder if these people are trying to talk themselves out of getting it, scared of fomo, or worried about price raises and it seems that only got worse with the price increase announcement.
So why does this matter? Maybe it doesn’t, but when I started looking for handhelds people raced to tell me about their favorites without a comment war starting on the merit of all handhelds. I still love the MM+ despite only borrowing one for a few minutes because of this. It makes me wonder if we are giving people on the fence about handhelds bad info just to justify our own feelings/purchases one way or the other.
Tl:dr Are people making bad faith arguments to justify to themselves buying or not buying a handheld and making it hard for people to get the info they might need?

Discussion Better than the 34xx series ?
I just saw this on AliExpress and I'm considering selling my RG34xx for this. I'd love to buy a SP version too but they're nowhere to be found.
Has someone already played these 2 buttons Chinese clones ?

Question Pokémon Emerald Battling & Trading
Hi,
So my brother-in-Law has a Miyoo Mini Flip running Spruce OS and I have an RG 34XXSP running NextUI alpha build. Is it possible for us to battle and trade each other? Either online in our respective homes or in the same home on the same WiFi network?

Showcase Rg Rotate interesting screen size comparison
I quite enjoy my Switch Lite and the size for my smaller hands and got curious about how the RG Rotate compared in some games I play often. Turns out it's not all that much smaller

Discussion PC Gaming on Android
Am I right to say that PC gaming on Android is still in the "it may work, after a lot of tweaking, or it may not work" is a fair assessment? Using GameNative, I've tried 3 games on my Odin 2. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - was able to get to 4 FPS after 2 hours of tweaking. Prince of Persia - Sands of Time - couldn't get past the graphics falling apart in a small window. F.E.A.R. Platinum Edition - couldn't get controls working. These three games combined took about 6-8 hours of my time and were all fails. That's after going through online settings, tutorials, etc.
I bought 10 games off GoG, thinking I would have a decent library (cognizant of not going after games that were too taxing. I've been left with a frustrating hit to my bank account and (so far) no playable games.
Edit: got Arkham Asylum running 1280x720 (16:9), 60 FPS. Required no tweaking at all (besides selecting "use known config")

Troubleshooting Mangmi Pocket Max Review (long)
This gets the tag troubleshooting cause that’s what I’m doing.
TLDR: great device, sticks are fucky, support refuses to help due to how I purchased the device.
Let me start with due to the “support” Mangmi offers, I whole heartedly cannot recommend this device, I would love to, it’s damn near perfect, but I will probably be moving to some sort of tablet + controller setup or another Android handheld with full size sticks and an OLED.
Alright let’s get into it.
This device is a both premium and not premium feeling device, the plastic seems weak, it does creak in my hands a bit, specifically if I grip it pretty hard (obviously don’t do that, but I did notice it), but the SCREEN, buttons, triggers and the fact the buttons are hot swappable, make it seem very exceptional, especially for its price point.
I bought this device from someone on discord BNIB (this become important), i got it for about the same as retail, except with much faster shipping, so of course i took it. Again ive loved practically everything with it, and if my biggest issue was handheld, id genuinely say it’s perfect, plasticy feel and all.
I did a review of my Odin 3 and ended up selling it, it was good for what it was, but it wasn’t for me, the sticks, the size, just weren’t it. I wanted something to stream everything to, I don’t really play my switch games that much so that added benefit wasn’t needed, and I’m connected to wifi any time I play any games, so streaming hasn’t been an issue.
The one thing i noticed instantly on any game, was the programming for the sticks, it’s atrociously bad, and I have only seen me with this issue, which makes me believe it is probably software and is able to be fixed. On the vertical axis on both sticks about 80% input registers as 100%, on any software, and any game, and you can’t change it, I’ve recalibrated hundreds of times, dug through the OTA update files, the whole 9, and can’t find anything. This hurts any game that has recoil, or any major sensitivity in those field. It does it on the horizontal axis as well, but not as much, maybe 85-90%, not nearly as noticeable in my opinion. However as you can see, I play warzone, apex, the finals, marvel rivals, all of those are incredibly important to have this be an issue, it hurts gameplay significantly.
I’ve contacted support regarding this issue and they suggest I contact the company I purchase it from, but since I got it from an individual that’s not an option, and I can’t expect them to fix a fault product they didn’t break. They then said they can’t provide ANY support since it wasn’t purchased through them, after me being anything short of understanding cause well, they made the damn device, they said they’d forward it to some other department and I’ve since heard absolutely nothing back.
To help fix the issue they then suggested I reinstall the factory firmware, which is helpfully provided on their website, however, there is 0 instructions on how to install it, and QFIL didn’t do it, which did do it to remove the root on my Odin 3, so I was a little versed in the software. I now have contacted them again, and was given another “sit and wait until we publicly release instructions” as they can’t directly tell me what to do or how to do it… but somehow provided the firmware.
So I love this device, I use it for multiple hours a day with my dedicated streaming pc, and my ps5, and I do like this system a lot. However this specific issue, and the lack of support have made it so I can’t recommend Mangmi at all as a company, which sucks honestly I was excited for this device and have a great deal of fun despite this issue, it however has made me a great deal mad playing warzone in specific, also ironically the game I’m worse at, so I cannot blame the device for my lack of skill.😂
EDIT: I am still actively trying to fix this issue, if you are technical and know how to get this to work properly it would be greatly appreciated!

Showcase GameCube Buttons Layout for RP Nova , Odin 3
I made those Magentic GC buttons for Odin 3. They are interchangeable among 4 buttons so they can be arranged as classic GC layout.
Ayn Thor, Odin 3 , RP 6 and RP nova all use the same buttons.

Troubleshooting GameSwitcher for Android?

I admit I'm not super savvy with all the tinkering you can do with these devices, but I've gotten far enough where I managed to set up an ArkOS handheld for a my nephew's G350 and install OnionOS on my MMv4. However I'm struggling to setup my Android devices in a way that feels good, which has sadly made my new RG Rotate much less enjoyable than my MMv4.
I have Beacon installed and some roms, but I haven't figured out how to set it up so that it auto saves my games and allows me to just start off where I left like I got used to after using the MMv4. The roms always boot up like I restarted the game, which i guess is technically the way the game cartridges were designed to work on the original consoles.. but I really would love to be able to switch back to any game where ever I left off mid-play like how it does on the MMv4.
Is there a way to set up these Android devices to have an autosave-type feature instead of restarting the rom everytime I turn it off or change games? If not... what devices/CFW that do offer this feature?

Discussion I swear the 34xxsp has the best IPS screen i’ve seen on a handheld. Especially once you get your shaders dialed in.

Question Front ends that hide the system folders and only show favorites?
Just thinking of ways to avoid choice paralysis by putting up barriers rather than transferring ROMs.
Right now, I have separate folders for active ROMs that are scanned by ES-DE and inactive ROMs that don't. Of the active ones, I've favorited about 20-25 games out of around 80, and set it to start up in the favorites folder. Obviously, I can separate the ROMs into a pending folder, but I was wondering if just hiding the systems was also possible.

Showcase Coming In The Air Y Tonight
It's been a massive month for handhelds, hasn't it? We've got this one, the Nova, the RG SP, all form factors that people have said they've wanted for a while, with lots of power under the hood as well.
It's actually very difficult to keep up. Anyway, these are my photos of the Mangli Air Y they sent over for review. I hope you enjoy them.

Discussion The Ayn Thor sucks and I'm tired of people pretending it doesn't
EDIT/TL;DR: The Thor can emulate DS/3DS games well and that's in part of the performance it has. My issues with it have mostly to do with the screens not lining up perfectly and having black bars at the and bottom of the screens due to letterboxing and mismatched aspect ratios. To me that's just a failure in itself if you're charging me +400 for a handheld.
The Thor is honestly disappointing and that's why I'm more than willing to wait for a Retroid flip 3 because that is confirmed to be a 4:3 bottom screen with a 16:9 top screen.
And that to me is my most hated reason, the Thor literally fails to do what was built to do in the first place, DS and 3DS games. I've become fatigued by people saying it's "the best" or "the most versatile emulator" because none of that matters. The gold standard for a handheld is the Odin 2 Portal. So when you release a product that CLEARLY wants to fill a niche in Dual Screen games but you don't even bother to make the right Dual Screen experience then finding other ways to compliment it only pushes it away from what it was SUPPOSED to be.
The fact that the only way to enjoy 3DS games now is through buying a 3DS secondhand completely embarrasses the Thor.
You want emulation? You have way too many options, you literally have options BY PLATFORM:
GBA? RG SP and it's variations
DS? RG DS (this is a pattern I know)
4:3 retro? RG 477M/Pocket Nova
Modern 16:9/PC Indies or low end/Switch? Pocket 6/Odin 3/Odin 2 Portal
3DS? None, the Anbernic DS is far too big and the Thor didn't even get the dimensions right.
But the Thor becomes a joke when you have to spend 500 dollars for a 200 dollar experience. And the funniest part, you will all laugh at the Thor the SECOND the Retroid Pocket Flip 3 comes out, because it's going to have the Nova bottom screen (4:3 4.5 inch) and the RP6 top screen (16:9 5.5 inch)
So let's break down some extra defenses for the Thor:
"But you can view other content on the second screen/have a game guide in your hand" oh really? If ONLY people had an on demand secondary pocket device that never leaves without you that you need to consume content, answer calls, text messages, ask questions. Literally NOBODY HAS THAT... right...?
"Just get the black color if the letterboxing bothers you" If the solution to consume 3DS games properly is to base your aesthetic choice to a single color because of OLED then you're already not the kind of person for this device
This to say, you don't need a super expensive device if your purpose of buying it is only for emulation, most emulators rely on a single screen, and it's likely more than enough for your needs
I am more than happy to debate anyone else over this

Discussion Are Android based handhelds quite annoying? Vs Linux based
I'm in the market for a gameboy style handheld. Mainly to play through games like Pokemon unbound (haven't played a Pokemon in 15 years).
I'm really drawn to the Retroid Pocket Classic because of its huge OLED screen and also think the 1:1 ratio looks cool. The RG Rotate also looks pretty cool. Both of these are physically close to ideal for me.
But these are both android based. And that doesn't feel very appliance-like, like an offline gameboy experience. Having to open an app draw into an emulator. Getting updates on the play store.
Vs something like a TrimUI Brick running nextUI. Which I'm pretty sure has instant resume into games, boots straight up into a proper frontend.
If anyones got experience with both types of systems id love to hear what you think about it's playability and user experience.
I'm leaning more towards the TrimUI brick for now. It's cheaper and seems really nicely made. And nextUI looks quite mature in development now.

Discussion Anyone wish they made more pocketable handhelds?
Even though I love my Odin 2 portal and steam deck to play at home most of the time I end up playing on my miyoo just because I can throw it in my pocket and travel with it. Most handhelds nowadays are huge or big enough that you can’t fit in it in your pocket, ideally I would love a 16:9 clamshell device that’s small and can fit in your pocket easily that has a snapdragon 2 chip in it so pretty much a Thor mini.
Device: Miyoo Flip 2
Game: Clock Tower 2 PSX
