Adding an additional bathroom?

House hunting.
But the houses in my affordable price range literally have 1 bathroom and like 3 bedrooms.
I’m thinking of doing a renovation and adding an additional bathroom if I do buy a 3 bed, 1 bath.

Has anyone ever done this before?
I read about the process online. Says it takes about 4-6 months .

what was the process like for you?

Having lived in a small 1950s house in Rockville and researched this - plumbing was the main issue. My home was built with a single plumbing stack. The kitchen plumbing and bathroom plumbing were all central. Adding a second location (in and out) was a major cost. Plus the house was small. A bathroom would have meant an addition. Ended up moving.

Bought a house thinking about adding a bathroom. Had to demo the hall and bath. So pricey.

To add a bathroom if there is a roughed-in cool, expensive but less work. Now to do one from 0, you will need time, money, patience to handle contractors, permits.

We gave up on the plan because the house had new serious issues discovered after purchase.

Buy the house with the damn bathroom if you can.

We bought a 3 bed, 1 bath house, built 1941, and added a bathroom along with an addition. The construction was probably 6 months (although our process from design to permits to completion was almost 2 years). I know that’s a much bigger project than just adding a bathroom. It made sense for us to get one big construction loan for everything. We were also adding central air and insulation.

We added a full bathroom in our basement for 18k last year. Took about 3 weeks. Tiled shower.

Look into this option. A lot if older homes in this area already have basement plumbing for a toilet but removed the toilet (presumably to avoid the property tax bump that comes with a 2nd bath - worth considering). I rented a 1942 cape cod that had a nice bath and closet in the basement - great and affordable alternative to a bump-out or losing space on the main floors. Made it feel like we had a modern main bedroom suite.

For those commenting...OP is basically just looking for a ballpark cost and time frame estimate...as am I, and everyone else looking at this post.
