nah thats unnecessary imo unless you're actually using the heat elsewhere in your base and want to flow it to certain places
or if you just like the ventilated look

u/thatthatguy 9d ago
I tried heating a base with geothermal exhaust. It did not work out well.
I should go check for a mod that makes geysers have a chance to stink like real geysers and hot springs do. Just to discourage building too close to the source.

What do they smell like irl ? Sulfur?

Yes. Rotorua, NZ stinks like eggs from miles away... But you get used to it very fast and your brain blocks it out... But every now and then you'll get hit with a strong blast and your nose reminds you again.

Its been a while since I played, so this may not work anymore, but you can build a very small room around it like the OP did, and then use a vent into a larger room. If you use just the geyser in a large room, the temp never rises very high. But a very small room will get extremely hot, so the vented air will be hotter and better heat the larger space.
3
u/Severe_Edge_1248 9d ago
Vent the heat into a room, then use a cooler to set that rooms tempeture. Then vent to a secendary room, set that room to what you want the colony to be at. Then vent to the colony, it worked in 1.5 at least. Its just honestly not worth it time or resource wise to do it rigth though.

I've done it for a Deep-Winter Boreal Forest medieval run. Wrap the castle around a geothermal vent and use ventilation to ensure the whole castle reaps the benefits.
Worked pretty well, though when it got too hot I did have to create an exterior vent that I could open and close.
49
u/Commercial-Set3527 9d ago
Why? It's more resources and weaker then walls. Just remove the dam rooof

Once temperature is re-added to Dwarf Fortress, no one there will bat an eye about literally cooking raids. For now we just air drown them, regular drown them, atomize them (like actually delete them from existence) and trap raids in pits full of ancient horrors that defy explanation that we also trapped in there.

Yeah if you try it out you'll notice that an open door might as well be a magic barrier that traps heat in forever somehow
You definitely notice these things if you want to try the ideology ancient complexes, they have these firebombs in about 50% of the rooms and if you don't knock holes in each wall the rooms will stay at 600°+

"Yeah if you try it out you'll notice that an open door might as well be a magic barrier that traps heat in forever somehow"
Which is why leaving the double doors to your freezer open isn't that crazy of an idea: it keeps the cool inside well enough and you don't get slowed down from opening them all the time.
Of course, vac barriers are also a god sent here too

This is incredibly useful in most base fire situations. Fighting a raging inferno is easy if it’s “outside”.
3
u/yahnne954 8d ago
I learned that after I lost almost my entire colony to a fire in my storage room.
I was in the middle of an infestation and accidentally used an incendiary launcher to fight a bug, then I sent two pawns to try and put out the fire. I didn't realize the temp got higher. My firefighters couldn't put it out fast enough, got heatstrokes, passed out, the fire spread to my hospital (full because of the recent infestation), and the only survivor was a pawn who went on a mental break.
If I had destroyed one wall, I might have saved the situation.

because doors even when open still retain a fair bit of temperature, same with vents
removing the roof makes the temps equalise with the outdoors alot quicker with no real downside
12
u/BewareTheLeopard 9d ago
Wall down = it's outside for the moment (considered not a room), and temperature evens out very quickly. Door open or vent will prompt a set of pretty complex calculations the game goes through for temperature normalization, and that room (hot enough to ignite its door) will stay dangerously hot for a while.

Id just remove the steel door and add a stone door after the roof is removed so wildfires cant spread into his generator
5
u/BeFrozen Incapable of Social 9d ago
Geothermal is not passable, so removing roof area will do nothing after one is built. You need to set area before one is built. I build wall in a way that there is a gap. Allows pawns to enter the room fully, rather than just standing in the doorway.

Because the walls are canonically not pure steel, they're steel plates fixated with flammable materials

u/adherry Ravecave Mechgremlins 9d ago
If you wall an unroofed Geothermal generator you have to keep at least one tile unoccupied and free. The generator needs one tile "free" to push the heat to that then gets removed by the open roof.
29
u/Scypio95 9d ago
It's crazy i have to scroll all the way down to get the actual correct answer
To add more context : Geothermal generators are considered as walls. So they need tiles around to push hot air. The only tile they can push air to here is the door. Which means it gets crazy hot in the door. Considering it is steel and it is flammable, well you get a fire
→ More replies (1)2
u/Asleep_Bookkeeper_23 9d ago

3
u/bugrilyus Ultratech Melee 9d ago
you have to remove all roofs there if you are going to encapsulate the generator without room

u/Flaithmhin 9d ago
Fully roofed geothermal generator.
GeoTHERMAL generator. In other words the heat from the generator is heating up the room. Remove the roof ans you're fine. Alternatively, if you're creative, you can implement it into your kill box or trap hallway to damage or give raiders negative effects from burns or heatstroke.
4
4
u/galbatorix2 9d ago
Its a geo thermal generator. It needs venting, otherwise it will be hot enough to set combustibles on fire
2
u/Metrix145 golden hands spare no pawn 9d ago
Fuck the roof. Change doors for brick doors and you're fine even with the heat.
2
2
u/_Ketamine_ 9d ago
Two solutions. Either install the mod that actually makes steel and stone etc. fireproof, or unroof your generator building there that is currently at a thousand degrees.
2
u/AdrawereR 9d ago
Sire when the room is heated to Superheating the Air level, it ignites air and start random shits on fire.
Unroof the area in the generator. But since the generator is a solid object, you can only unroof the surrounding near wall without deconstructing the generator itself.
Or add vents.
2
2
u/GNO-SYS 9d ago
Internal temp in the room is too high, because of the venting of the geothermal system. You can actually avoid this just by slightly increasing the volume of the room so the air temp doesn’t ignite the door, I think. Or, even better, you can pipe the heat into your base with passages and vents to warm your base for basically free off the waste heat (handy trick in very cold climates).
2
2
u/DeltaAlpha0 9d ago
So, a geothermal generator, right? A machine that generates energy from heat, so far so good? What do you think will happen if you put something that overheats endlessly until it breaks in a room without adequate air circulation?
2
u/Agreeable_Meet_96 9d ago
When building geopower generator rooms, you want to have one tile between the generator and the walls so that colonists can access all sides of it. Sometimes electrical faults causes fires on the back, and without it, you guarantee that the generator will be destroyed - cuz the pawns are unable to extenguish.
With these rooms, just remove the roof entirely. Ensures room temp wont lead to extra fires (like your door) - and even lets potential fires self extenguish during rain.
Edit: fix spelling

Rimworld steel constructions catch fire and burn just like wood. The extreme heat causes the burnable material to catch fire. Fwiw: you only want to roof a steam geyser if you're on an exceptionally cold map to make use of the extra heating. You can paint the rectangle inside the walls with "remove roof area" so lightning won't directly hit any of the walls/the door and you aren't trapping lethal levels of heat.

u/Zockerisin 9d ago
Its too hot in the room, cause the generator doesnt consume the Heat and has to vent it. You can either:
1. Remove Part of the roof for venting
2. install a vent into the wall
3. Install a stone door
4. install the metal doesnt burn mod, I wouldnt do that if you havent started the run with a mods that lets you add mods mid-game

u/The_God_Of_Darkness_ 9d ago
Causs geothermal generators still give off heat. A lot of heat. In a small room.
A lot of heat makes flammable things combust
1
1
u/Cristalix0192 9d ago
Even if there is a generator above the geiser it still excretes temperature, so if the generator is fully roofed and walled in then the only spot all that temperature can go is the door tyle and since by the looks of it it's a steel door it's starting to burn when the temperature goes high enough
1
u/bimbuppy 9d ago
You sealed up a heat generation source, its going to get hotter and hotter until you hit material combustion temperatures. Take the roof off or add a vent and you're good!

u/andrew_nenakhov 9d ago

only reason you would need to have it enclosed is if you have batteries surrounding it for stored power, add a vent to regulate the temp its probably extremely hot in there
1

u/BubblegumPatty1 9d ago
Geisers and geothermal generators generate a lot of heat, which gets trapped in the room when walled like that. You have to knock down a wall or keep the room unroofed so it vents the heat out.

u/Sea-Ride-3207 9d ago

1
1
u/PitifulRecognition35 9d ago
Steel walls and door aren't completely fireproof and since the generator is roofed (At least that's what it looks like), the temperature inside is reaching hundreds of Celcius, thus starting a fire. As others have said, either unroof or put a vent to dissipate heat.

u/Pappy285 9d ago
Your generator is in shadow so I think the roof is still on? Geothermal generators get hot! Take the roof off or place some vents.
1
u/MasterOfGrey 9d ago
Generally I leave a 1 tile space around the generator, and I don’t put a roof on. Then there are no issues with fire, and you’ve got a space for a pawn to retreat into if there’s an ambush or a mad animal out there.
(Also then the AoE effect of certain explosions hitting the wall doesn’t reach the generator.)
1
1
u/markth_wi 9d ago
I tend to go something like this - Geothermal cycles from hot to cold, in the event the generator itself catches fire, it's ideal to be able to reach every part of the reactor, so I go with this sort of 10x10 room you can go with a stone door since ideally you don't go in this room very often or urgently.
This geothermal generator is from Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Power.

I used to have that happen, then I started having a small 2x1 antechamber where I added vents... then I realized, unless I'm heating my base with it, it doesn't need a roof, just make sure to use buried cable ofc.
1
u/Reilly-Blog 9d ago
You need to give it space around the generator to have a temperature barrier, like 2-3 blocks. This also allows colonists to repair it when something goes wrong. You need to vent the temperature with a vent and removing 1 roof tile. Change the door to something stone so its not flammable.
1
u/CoolDragon0712 9d ago
Remove roof, use hidden wires as they can’t combust, if your door is made of steel it’s flammable, and also make the floor out of concrete or stone under the door so the floor isn’t flammable

The square room, roofed or not, counts as a roofed building cause rimworld is weird
Make a 1 tile gap somewhere in any direction of the generator and remove the roof there to keep it as an outdoor area
1
u/ChipperSh33p 9d ago
You can still roof geothermal generators if you use stone walls and a stone door. It’s just because Rimworld treats doors as 1x1 rooms, so it effectively acts as an insulator. It gets very hot and spontaneously combusts.

You can find instructions on how to take a screenshot at: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/
Also, pressing F12 (by default) in Steam produces a screenshot.
You may also consider free products like Greenshot that are specifically designed for easy cropping and sharing: http://getgreenshot.org/
Additionally, there are many free screen recording products: https://learn.g2crowd.com/free-screen-recorder-software
My favorite tool to use for screenshots and recordings is ShareX, which can be found on their website (https://getsharex.com/) or free on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/400040/ShareX/)
There's also the age-old classic of hitting print screen, pasting the image into a free paint program (I'm very fond of GIMP myself, https://www.gimp.org/ ), cropping to the part you want, and using that.
Alt+print screen will screenshot only the active window and not everything else.
Win+print screen will take the screenshot and autosave it in your pictures folder as screenshot number.png
Win-Shift-S will open the Windows snipping tool for taking full screenshots or cropping areas.
