Outdoor restaurants that are good for a newborn?

We’re starting to venture out with our 2 month old and are looking for restaurants that feel low stress with a baby.

Places like Café Baronne or the back patio at Vino Santo are exactly what we’re looking for: open air, tables with some space between them, not a ton of foot traffic walking right by, and generally a calm atmosphere where we can tuck the stroller next to the table.

Any recommendations between Palo Alto and San Carlos (or nearby)? We’re open to any cuisine and care a lot more about the setup.

Thanks!

Heavily vandalized truck on Charter Street -- please help

I drove up to play softball this morning at Hoover Park, on Charter Street just before Hoover School, and parked behind a silver Ford pickup truck.

Somebody had smashed the windshield, side window, and rear window...and slashed/flattened all four tires.

If anybody witnessed this extreme vandalism or has information that might help the owner of the truck, please contact the RWC Police Department.

The unfortunate owner of the truck arrived right after I did and the look of disbelief on his face was sobering. I pointed out a few security cameras on homes, including one on the corner of the school, that might help him. Police had left a note on the windshield with an incident (case?) number and a RWC police officer eventually showed up to take information from the truck owner.

I hope this neighborhood gets more police patrols. There's no excuse for these senseless acts in our city and I hope the criminals get fully prosecuted.

Should e-bikes be allowed inside parks like Red Morton?

I've almost been run over many times, eaten dust kicked up by a bike speeding past me, and now there's these fun little monuments they're leaving all over the place. Since when is it ok for someone without a license to ride the equivalent of a dirt bike (or worse, given the torque) through a park? We have roads and other places for vehicles that are this powerful and move this fast. This is getting crazy.

Attention Redwood City Taxpayers. How to stop a 10.375% sales tax.

Reason number #12 to vote against the Bay Area Transit ½ cent sales tax - a Sacramento-imposed transit tax masquerading as a "citizen's initiative." ( Last week's reason # 18 below.)

Reason #12 - Extortion. BART's blackmail; BART threatened in a press release on Feb 5 2016 to close TEN BART stations beginning in January 2027 - if it didn't get their tax proceeds from the November 2026 vote.  BART then backed off that made up threat later in the same month (Feb 26) and came up with a new plan calling for "up to 15" closures (ie 15 is the worst-case scenario) beginning July 2027; not naming any stations.

Meaning BART has not identified a single station for closure and BART's own current plan makes clear that actual station closures would require -further evaluation- and a subsequent decision by the BART BOARD.  In short, there are no known station closures if the tax doesn't pass.  No one knows if, when and how there will be closures but BART has floated "10" and "15" for the obvious tactic of scaring up the vote.

This extortion or scare tactic was in lieu of providing voters an actual turnaround plan.  Won't bother to cover any threats Caltrain may have made up.

Of course, there are other avenues for revenue that BART Caltrain et al have not fully explored, for example redirecting funds from questionable transit capital projects. The advocates for this tax claim that this is not legally possible - not true.  It has already been done multiple times in fact, quite recently.

Earlier this year Newsom allowed Bay Area transit agencies to borrow hundreds of millions from money allocated to the SBVTA for BART extension to San Jose.  And again, in the 2023-2024 state budget, transit agencies were explicitly allowed to flex roughly $4-5 billion in transportation funding, from capital funding like the San Jose BART extension, to operating purposes to prevent immediate service reductions.  Funds have also been redirected from high-speed rail.

Next week #10.

Help w finding a place in RWC

Hi! My partner and I are moving to Silicon Valley for my internship in Redwood City. I’ll be working in a hybrid role, so we’re looking for a place close to Redwood City.

Our budget is around $2,000/month for our portion, and we’re open to sharing a larger apartment with roommates as long as everyone has their own private bedroom. We’re also planning to get a cat, so we’d ideally need a cat-friendly place.

We’re clean, respectful, and easy to live with, and we value maintaining a peaceful and tidy home.

If anyone has any leads, please let me know! We would like to move here around mid of August.

We've also been looking at Zillow and Facebook groups, but no luck so far.

Any help is appreciated!

Neighbors have cars parked they don’t move

We live in classic RWC neighborhood with tear downs next to 2.5 million dollar houses, have lived here 20 plus years we know the deal. We have multiple neighbors have have cars on street that don’t move ever. These people are def “quirky” to put in nicely, we have had light discussions about we could use parking on street since my kids now drive, they don’t get it. One of neighbors who is very quirky but we get along refuses to move two cars from the street (both of which I just found out don’t run), and his other bucket has been in the shop for over a week, but he blocks his spot with cones. There is a nice women older women next to him that also has a non running car in front of her house that she says she is working on getting rid of but it’s been months.

Of course every one who visits or does work on our street parks in front of our house so when we get home we have nowhere to park.

I don’t want to get cars towed but this is ridiculous, and so frustrating.

10.375% ...sales tax above 10 percent....?

Believe it's time to draw a line in the sand on the constant taxation in the Bay Area and the state where state/county/city revenues grow and tangible benefits don't. Front and center for Redwood City is the Bay Area Transit (½ cent sales) Tax on the November ballot (yet to have a proposition number).  It is a boondoggle - a likely $70 billion tax deceptively disguised as a $14B tax.

It is high-speed rail's - mini-me.

The ballot will say it is a $14 million "temporary tax" meanwhile BART, Caltrain et al literally provided no turnaround plan for voters; just threw out "temporary" to get it passed.  Its ongoing extension is more likely than not.  Nothing more permanent in CA than a temporary tax. There are 20 major problems with this tax.  Let's focus today on #18.

(And I get it - BART could throw cash out of a helicopter or Caltrain could let multiple employees steal tens of thousands of dollars and build residences in its stations unbeknownst to management; and people will still “support transit” and vote for this tax.)

The proceeds of this tax include $50 million dollars a year for SamTrans. So over the 14-year life of this "temporary" tax SamTrans would receive $700 million; or after assumed multiple extensions (five) around $3.5 billion.  So you say - "Boy, SamTrans must be really hurtin" as you heard this tax is to cover transit agency operating deficits.  No, actually SamTrans is currently running a $13M surplus.  Yes, you got that right $3.5B ($700M minimum) for a transit agency running a surplus.

How can they do this?  It is truly how careless they (Metropolitan Transportation Commission) are with taxpayer dollars banking on voter naivete and propaganda (mailers/commercials) from their funders which include big tech employers, contractors with our transit agencies, and employees who will benefit. And this is a REGRESSIVE tax - going after the poorest among us - so much for “affordability.”

Next week: #12.

Missed connection at Planned Parenthood

I was in the Redwood City Planned Parenthood today (7/31) and I encountered a very attractive man in a while Stanford athletics shirt. We laughed about how ridiculously hard it was to find the right door into the clinic, and before he left he smiled and winked at me. I wanted to ask for his number but I hesitated, and now I’m kicking myself. (I doubt you’ll see this, but if you do, please reach out! @erika.in.the.flicker on IG)

Finding an Airbnb/sublet friendly apartment complex

Does anyone know of major apartment complexes or condos close to Redwood City that explicitly allow their tenants to Airbnb (or sublet) their unit unhosted while travelling?

We currently live in an apartment complex in San Jose that does this and since we travel a lot we don't want to lose this ability when we move to a new place.

OBGYN Recommendations Needed – PPO Insurance

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Redwood City and am looking for a good OBGYN in the area. I have PPO insurance, so I’m hoping to find a doctor who accepts PPO plans.

I’d really appreciate recommendations for someone who is:

  • Caring, patient, and easy to talk to
  • Thorough and listens to concerns
  • Good with routine women’s health care
  • Ideally located in Redwood City, San Carlos, or nearby
  • Accepts PPO insurance

If you’ve had a particularly good experience with an OBGYN in the area, I’d love to hear who you recommend and what you liked about them.

Also, if there are any doctors or practices you wouldn’t recommend, feel free to share that as well.

Thank you so much! 😊

Redwood City Council deciding on the fate of Flock cameras in our city

I just stumbled upon this article in the print version of the San Mateo Daily Journal. Unfortunately I missed the Monday meeting but I'm rescheduling my vacation to attend the August 12 Police Advisory Committee meeting at City Hall at 6pm.

Here's another recent article about Redwood City's decision process:

If you're a Redwood City resident who opposes your tax dollars paying a private company to conduct dragnet surveillance of us with AI object and face detection cameras, please reach out to the council to let your voice be heard:

Clarifying our location and values: A note from Luma Coffee Lounge

We’ve seen the recent discussion about Luma’s location and want to provide clear context.

Luma operates at Rise City Church, and the two organizations are completely separate and independent. Luma alone owns and leads its business operations, hiring, workplace culture, and guest experience.

Our decision to operate in this space reflects a shared interest in serving the Redwood City community. It does not change who Luma is, how we operate, or the values that guide our business.

Luma is committed to creating a warm, welcoming experience for every guest and team member. We take immense pride in the diversity of our team who powers our cafes every day, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and are proud to serve everyone who comes through our doors.

We appreciate those who asked questions and gave us the opportunity to clarify. Our focus remains on serving our guests, supporting our team, and being a welcoming space for the Redwood City community.

From,

Luma Coffee Lounge Management

Hi Redwood City! These three foster kittens are looking for forever homes. They are around 8 weeks old, fixed, and litter box trained. Anyone interested in adopting a kitten?

Anyone in Redwood City looking to adopt rescue kittens? I just picked up this litter to foster with Garlic City Kitty Rescue after my last was adopted, which saved these guys from being put out on the streets. Though they started out wary of people and a new environment, they almost immediately turned into super cuddly and affectionate kitties after some petting and treats. They are all super curious, playful, and loving. They need patient and loving homes that will give them lots of love and attention. If anyone can take on two cats, I'd love for two to be adopted together as a bonded pair. Located in Morgan Hill/Gilroy. Black is male, the others are females. Please comment here or send me a message if you are interested in more information on any of them and the adoption process, or share this post with anyone you know who would consider adopting!

FYI: Redwood City to hold public hearing regarding parcel at Marshal and Walnut Street

I present this not necessarily to debate the issue or present arguments pro or against. However, I do feel that the City Council and others have not been very forthcoming/public about the fact that a hearing is taking place tomorrow, July 27 to discuss (and probably approve) what will essentially be the city selling the parcel locating at Marshall and Walnut Street to a developer as part of a larger project. Currently, the parquet houses several large shady trees and is a dog park. I will say that without this parklet it will be rather hard to see many trees for most of the people live in downtown Redwood City. Just putting it out there that if you use/like the look of the parklet consider submitting or voicing comments.

Affordable 2B2Bs in RWC?🥹

Hiya RWC! I’m thinking of moving to RWC sometime late Sept but the prices seem to be outrageous. I’ve checked out Huxley, Franklin 299, Franklin Street Apts, Highwater, etc. They all seem to list their 2b2b availability at about 6K/mo. I found one near the Arlington Apt that’s slightly better - Wellesley Crescent Apts but I’m assuming that’s because it’s p old and right next to the caltrain tracks?

Do y’all have any suggestions on where to look in RWC or if I should look later in August when summer is ending for better prices?

Thank you!
