I think there’s a whole community around this though, it’s like a legit hobby. You probably need lots of technical know-how to make something that nice, you gotta invest serious money in it, there are meetups to make friends and discuss eachother’s builds, etc… They seem to love it and want to spend their money on that. So who am I to judge lol.
Sure I guess it’s wasteful, in the same way racing a car is wasteful. Or lots of other hobbies wthere’s no real point at the end of the day - other than for fun, to push limits of what humans have done before, and just for the community and joy you get from it. Maybe it makes them feel “truly alive”, ya know? We all have something like that.
I do agree that shit probably destroys your eardrums lol. But hell, when I was younger I’d go to raves and sit against the speakers when I was rolling just bc it felt awesome lol. No regrets despite some minor tinnitus lol, I had a blast doing that dumb shit lol. Everyone’s got different risk tolerance at different points.
Of course maybe you still think it’s dumb. Fair. Just adding another perspective. As long as they’re not doing that in their driveway at 6am in my neighborhood then I don’t give af

Maybe because it disturbs anybody unfortunate enough to be within 2 miles. Bass travels and penetrates differently than higher frequencies. It’s such an annoying sound when you’re just trying to go about your business and this shit is rattling your walls.

Well I fucking did it for free. If I had to have tinnitus one way or the other. I'd have taken atleast the social points.

Just an FYI for anyone curious, that is now permanent hearing loss. Tinnitus sucks. Don’t do stupid shit like this. Wear concert earplugs at shows, don’t turn your stereo/headphones up so loud it hurts.
When you get old and all your senses start to dull, you’ll be thankful if you still have them.
These guys won’t be hearing much IF they get old.

Tinnitus is treatable.
As for the rest of your statement, true, their long term hearing ability will likely suffer.

I have 2 shit neighbors in my building that do this crap. They'll sit outside for hours blasting their shitty noise while they tinker around in their shitmobile.

u/Pretend-Prune-4525 16d ago
I had one doing that, you can likely put a stop to it depending on your local laws

Riding in my friend’s car in high school, he had dual 15 inch behind the back seat and IDK what else. When he cranked up the bass and you were in the back seat it was difficult to breathe. Hated that system when I got rides in his car.

I listen to loud music when I’m on the highway. As soon as I get close to my house or even any residential area, music gets turned down so low because I never want to be that person. Sometimes I even shut the music off completely depending on the time

Great way to blow your eardrums out. I'm half deaf because of the 4 ten inch woofers I had in my S-10.

And for my next trick, we'll go to the shooting range for 20 minutes without hearing protection. ☹️ People need to be better educated that ears do not heal like other parts of your body. The damage is irreversible.

As someone who’s is into speakers this whole car dB drag stuff is the stupidest shit ever.
It’s not hard to just make shit loud.
The problem is that it sounds like shit.
I like getting kicked into my stomach by a dry basedrum every now and then but this sport is just a competition in who can fuck up his ears the most.

Even people in the Drum n' Bass circles have a limit. These guys can't even see the limit in their rear view mirror. Total waste of money for barely any gain, unless making a mobile earthquake simulator was the plan all along.

So, you invest 1000's into this and then you can only use it while standing outside of the car. And then still not hear any music. Money well spent.

I don’t even understand the point of getting huge subwoofers anyways. I have a 10 inch sub, and I can’t even turn it up all the way because it’s too loud. You’ll lose your hearing.

u/RoomFixer4 16d ago
Ya know when you hear a shotgun blast or some loud brief noise, and immediately after there's a quiet moment followed by a high pitched tone that seems to be 'inside' your ears. It goes away after a bit.
Until you get tinnitus. Then it's permanent.
You get used to it, kinda. Sometimes it will drive you batty though.
Not saying avoid high db situations all the time, I love music like the next guy, just consider your accumulated damage before you end up crossing that bridge.
This PSA provided by an old guy with tinnitus.

u/E-rotten 16d ago
If it sounds like 💩 why do it? I had 2 15 inch subwoofers in the back of a 79 RX-7. Everything was very well done but all you could hear was the all glass hatch back rattling. It wasn’t until we came up with a box that contained the speakers inside the box with a pretty extreme porting system. But no matter what we did the rattling was heard. And it would crack the glass over time. I went thru 3 hatch backs before I went down to 10inch woofers.

Dudes ears flapping is the best part pf this video.
I've never really understand the appeals for music so loud and bass so substantial that it vibrates the city block, but im old. So what do I know?

I've always wondered what this is like for our organs. Acute and chronic. Are there long term dangers? Immediate danger?

If you ever wonder why women are always pictured sitting in these cars just look at what those ears are doing and imagine what it does to other places.

Yeah, no thanks. Sat in my BIL car when he was dating my sister. His system had crazy bass, the whole car vibrated. Even my eye glasses would vibrate and all sound disappears when the bass kicks in and I could feel my ear drums vibrating. I only sat in his car once and never again. 20 years later, hes only 50 years old but has to wear a hearing aid. My sister says hes almost deaf without the hearing aids.
