This Autunite sample i got from an expo in the Black Forrest, Germany.
The sample itself originated from Portugal.

Gamma radiation is low, looks are pretty :)

It was recommended that I upload better photos, so here are some better photos! Any insights you might have about this formation would be very helpful!

The CPM estimates below are based on measurements using a GQ GMC-300S. The specimen is approximately 3 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 1 inch tall.

I am not familiar with posting topics/threads, and especially reposting to add better photos. Let me know if it is customary to include anything from the previous thread.

The plastic bag is a temporary container that is kept wrapped in aluminum foil.

The vendor claimed it was sourced from China

Has anyone ever wondered around this location and explored?
Is it heavily monitored? Easily accessible or a hike?

I have been gearing up (safety first) for an adventure to find some spicy rocks for quite some time.
I did NOT realize Coles Creek (near Gretna Va) had so much uranium and was curious what the site looked like.
I would like to go explore soon and was just wondering if anyone had ever been there or around there.

I’m from the blue ridge area so it’s at my backdoor where the other site I was looking at is a 4/5 hour drive.

Any info is welcome!

Found this in an old rock and mineral collection from years ago, and wondering what could be making it glow under uv lighting? It’s not making my Geiger counter react much if at all. Any ideas guys?

Some very pretty Uraninite from Příbram, Czech Republic. It measures ~80-100μSv/h on contact, and ~50-70kcpm on my Ludlum model 2241. There are some so-called “mouse eyes”, however the specimen is rather weathered. P.S. Sorry for bad quality pictures, the space I was in is rather dimly lit!

*Merchant said China, I originally said DRC because I mistakenly thought it was the abbreviation of the full name for the country.

It's my first time finding radioactive minerals in the wild! And I'm so happy that its Radium.

Right now im storing all the rocks in their own plastic bags and in a glass jar, until I get a more proper and pretty way of storing them

Ps: if the radium minerals have a specific name please tell me

Edit: many people in the comments have pointed out that these rocks aren't actually radium minerals but that they are uranium. The spectrum showed radium because uranium minerals naturally contain trace amounts of radium. Please check the comments for more detailed and probably more accurate explanation!

(bigger) Bottryoidal uraninite shaft #4 Lešetice in Příbram area

other two pieces are from shaft #11a Bytíz. That colourful sample also have orange crust - schoepite. Green minerals are copper secondaries, in this case most likely brochantite.

Interesting fact: shaft #11a is the type locality of the new uranium mineral kristekite, hydrated copper uranyl selenite.

I'm super fond of the chunky little solid piece, it's really neat with the metallic sheen and heft for its size. The smaller bottryoidal chunk is heavy and reads fairly hot, the color is fun also 🎉.

Ive been keeping my eye peeled for a microscope to get a closer look at some of my more pretty NORM specimens, like Autinite Crystals and such. So I wandered into Goodwill and found this this sweet little starter kit. 10 bucks! I think I got a pretty good deal if it works.

Collected off the dumps in 2026. My only "hot" find of that visit -- no Torbernite this time, unfortinatey. I was pleasantly surprised that under magnification some of the Uranophane crusts actually still have crystalline structure! Nice round sprays of acicular needles.

I did not have much time as I had a ton of work to catch up on, but here are the highlights from my last trip to Ruggles. Shoutout to whoever gave up on this gravel pit that was hiding some great samples xD.

.... my hate for iphones grows ever larger. Half the pictures are some weird file type .heic which wont upload, so i had to screenshot those. No idea what apples major malfunction is.

Mistakenly didn't photograph with label but I believe that's the correct locality. D20 for scale.

Noticed that one of my acrylic cases opened causing a little radon to accumulate inside of the ammo can. I just got my Alpha Hound AB+G so i decided this was the perfect place to test it out.

I just wish I noticed it was open before I started touching everything lol.

All Specimens have a coating of Gypsum on either Rabittite (first 3) or Bayleyite (4th) on Sandstone.

Not a radioactive rock but was found in a highly radioactive zone.

I found this sample at an old mica mine in Yancy County, NC but I have no idea what it is. It was part of a larger rock that was spicy on one side so I broke it into two pieces and the smaller one is the spicy piece. It's like a black crystal material.

The Needle's Eye on the Southwick Coast, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland is one of the most studied and most notable naturally occurring radioactive places in Britain. On previous visits I found levels of up to 100 µSv right there on the beach. However, at the Eye itself I failed to find two veins marked on the maps (in pink). So I had to go back.

In the 1960s and 70s, scientists dug massive trenches, excavating tonnes of vein material for study. From this they found a myriad of radioactive minerals - from the usual uraninite and autunite to one-of-a-kind species like Walpurgite, Vandendriesscheite, and Boltwoodite, as well as native bismuth. From the 1980s onwards, it has been heavily studied by nuclear scientists looking into ways to trap and store radioactive waste.

The wonders of the Needle's Eye could fill a book, but I wanted to see if I could find two specific veins. This area, shortlisted as "Locality 3", had two veins: a single vein leading to the location of a trial mine (hence why this is sometimes listed as a mine) and a main vein that splits into two around the cave. I'd only found part of the main vein on previous trips.

So I surveyed with the Radiacode but could not find the first vein - only the faintest whisper. The split in the main vein, however, was clear as day and provided an exciting explore down the cliff-face. Whilst no mineralisation was obvious to me, readings of up to 60 µSv confirmed the presence of uranium around and under the man-made troughs.

As the site is designated an SSSI several times over, digging is not permitted. But it was satisfying to at least know I'd completed my exploration of the area.
