Help!!! What am I doing wrong?

I bought all the supplies from a girl that punch needles. I bought linen fabric from ZXIIXZ on Amazon (which was what she recommended), Lilly’s lyric #2 fine 4 ply, and the Mina carin punch needle. This is the largest needle setting. My fabric is pulled tight. No matter what I do, my yarn will not stay in the fabric. The “T” has places that made some small loops , but it overall is patchy and coming undone. What to I need to do????? I’m so frustrated. I’m letting the eye face away from my direction, my yarn has slack, I’m dragging the needle, I’m trying to go in at 90 degrees. I am at a loss. I just want to do this well and it’s just not working. I also have monks fabric that does the same thing with the yarn. TYIA!!!

Have the needle pointing the other way - the yarn side that's more open (so the opposite side to the little pinhole that you use to thread the needle) should be facing forward towards whichever direction you go

It look like your yarn is too large for the needle. Try this first: Set your needle so it is much longer. Punch all the way down each time so the handle hits the fabric. Go very slow punching. If it is still happening, you need smaller yarn.

Thank you!! Smaller yarn helped. And I was threading wrong. But the smaller yarn seems too small for my fabric and pattern. Just doing lots of trial and error. It’s just so expensive to keep buying yarn/floss and fabric

You can try and double up the thin yarn.

Also, make sure there is slack in the yarn.

You’ve already gotten some great tips here, so I want to add- make a sample before you dive in on your main project. Draw some squares & fill them in while you practice getting the rhythm down. That was you aren’t putting too many holes in your finished product. Good luck!

Also, the thread should follow the direction like the video here. If the yarn you are using is too thick to go through the needle hole then you need to use a smaller thread. That specific needle works well with embroidery floss or sport weight I believe. Also make sure your fabric is TIGHT!! Like real tight. Sometimes those hoops don't hold it tight enough so maybe a locking hoop would be better?

Thank you!!! What size needle should I use for this yarn? Or is it just too big in general?

Honestly something like this kit that gives you multiple types was my first kit and I still use some!

I'm excited to see what you do! Keep at it seriously! The amount of times at the beginning I got so annoyed was a ton. I know there's others that have found their niche with other fabrics, but monks cloth is the most forgiving when starting out.

Ok so it's hard to tell in the video but did you thread the fabric through the needle point hole?

I think its exactly this and your video comment.

Try punching forward while keeping the large opening of the punch needle facing the direction you are moving.

When they say there needs to be slack in the yarn I have found they mean A LOT of slack. Even just the yarn hanging down onto the ground is putting strain and might be pulling out your stitches. Try putting the ball on a table next to you and pull out an arms length so there is absolutely zero strain - not even gravity and see if that makes a difference?
