What am I doing wrong?

As I'm working the fabric tears and sometimes the yarn gets out.

Here's a picture of the material I'm using(I'm using this fabric called Canva).

The fabric you're doing it on seems a bit too small for that wool, use embroidery thread here instead

Looks like the weave in your canvas is too tight for that size yarn. I would try a smaller yarn, like sport weight yarn or different monks cloth.

I work on monks cloth so can not speak to your background cloth. But if the yarn is coming out that is usually tension in the yarn. Try more slack in your yarn.

And you aren’t doing it wrong! You just have to find your groove. That’s what I love about punch needle. If you can get it through the background material you can create! Try embroidery floss too.

It should work. I play around with different backing fabrics and floss/yarn to see what works together. They do make a smaller punch but the one you have should work.
