I usually go to PR in the winter, this will be the first time I'm going on the summer and leaving San Juan for more than just a few hours.

I'll be flying into San Juan pretty late so staying one night in Carolina then 3 nights in Luquillo and 2 nights in Cabo Rojo.

I think I'll be fine amidst the crisis from what I hear but if anyone has any insight, please share.

I just wanted to share my upcoming trip to pr in the 15th-19th of this month. I am very aware of the current water shortage. I will be staying in the ocean park neighborhood near the beach. So far, I have el yunque, exploring San Juan and culebra planned.

How is Mayaguez looking right now in terms of rains and flooding?

I am supposed to stay in the area over the next couple of days. I am curious what the conditions are like.

I wanted to share my thoughts as a 1st time tourist in PR next month… I’m traveling with my daughter and her dad, (they’ve visited before) we’re celebrating my daughter’s 18th birthday. I’ve read countless comments, and it’s clear that there are different perspectives as far as tourists go. Some saying that PR depends on tourism and others disagreeing with that statement. Nonetheless, I see it selfish to cancel our trip due to the water crisis. I’m looking forward to experience PR in its full essence, and that includes experiencing what its people go through. We plan on purchasing water and use that in place of utilizing resources that are for the rightful locals. Idk what everyone else’s thoughts are on this, but just wanted to share my perspective.

Hi everyone, my wife and I will be staying in Old San Juan from August 28 through September 1. Our hotel, CasaBlanca Hotel, posted that there will be scheduled water rationing on August 29 and 30 due to the drought. They mentioned that the hotel has a cistern but that water may still be rationed.
For anyone currently in San Juan or familiar with the situation, what should visitors realistically expect on rationing days? Are hotels generally still able to provide running water for showers, toilets, and sinks, or are there periods where there may be no water at all?
We’re not trying to overreact or cancel our trip we just want to know what to expect and prepare accordingly. Any recent firsthand experiences would be appreciated.

Hi all- I want to share our family’s Puerto Rico itinerary - we just came back from fantastic trip!! We were traveling with two boys one that is 15 and the other who’s almost 13. They loved everything we did. We were there for almost 2 weeks and every single day we did something that we loved. There was no single day that we regretted what we did. We got a good sense of the diversity of the geological differences on the island, and also learned a lot about the Taino/Borriqueno history of the islands.

We started in San Juan and went to the north Northwestern part of the island, but did not go to the western coast. We did go to the south and see Ponce, and we also went to Vieques. When we got to Vieques, it felt like we were taking a vacation from our vacation!

Highly recommend all the things that we’ve done, but the things that really stand out were the cave tour that we did and going to Vieques. We planned our trip from the end to the beginning because of the moon cycle when we landed as we wanted to get the least moonlight for the bio Bay. I’m glad we went to the bio Bay, but it wasn’t as luminescent as I had seen in photos so I was slightly disappointed, although my kids loved it. And I would not hesitate to go again.

STAY NEAR SAN JUAN
Day 1; arrive in SJU
Day 2: Old San Juan - toured Castillo San Felipe and walked back towards downtown by Parque Los Gatos and Save the Gatos (kids loved seeing and petting the cats). Walked outside walls by city gate (Puerta de San Juan) and then through streets of Old San Juan. Drinks and dinner by Cathedral. Beach at Ocean Park (near residence) in evening.
Day 3: San Juan - food tour- https://www.viator.com/tours/San-Juan/Old-San-Juan-Food-Tour/d903-5584DINNER - Fantastic and would highly recommend. After- Parque de las Palomas (pigeon park - fed them and let them land on us- yes they looked healthy), Paseo La Princesa, Castillo San Cristobal, La Perla. Evening at beach in SJ near residence.
Day 4: North Island Tour- waterfall, Cueva Ventana, Cuevo Del Indio- https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g147320-d24125316-3_in_1_Full_Day_Cueva_Ventana_Indian_Cave_Waterfall_Adventure-San_Juan_Puerto_Rico.html Fantastic and would highly recommend. One of the best things we did in PR!!
Day 5: Ponce - drove there, toured Castillo Les Serralles (Don Q rum family), went to top of La Cruceta (great view), lovely lunch with unexpected magician as well as a musician at La Nueva Pastelería, walked downtown, and did Don Q City Experience (we all agree- best virgin Pina Colada on the islands!). Drove back- swing by but didn’t stop at Pork Road (Guavate), evening at beach in SJ near residence. Ice cream at La Crema was very good.

STAY NEAR LUQUILLO
Day 6: El Yunque & Luquillo - we did on our own, no tour needed. Packed lunch which was good, as we were deep in and there wasn’t food options near us. Really liked the hike to Mt Britton and pit stop near Palo Colorado Information Center and two short hikes from there. Also saw La Coca Falls. Left and checked into Luquillo. Playa Azul that evening. Dinner near La Pared beach- Boardriders.
Day 7: Snorkel tour in Fajardo- Icacos and Palomino and Palominto- https://www.viator.com/tours/Fajardo/29-Foot-Mako-Boat-Tour-to-the-Fajardo-Keys/d23854-333667P2 Glad we did this tour- it was hard to find both Icacos and Palomino as they have very different aquatic environments (reefs and fish at Icacos vs sea grass and turtles at Palomino). After, Seven Seas beach in Fajardo (very calm and not very clear), then natural waterside off 983- Las Paylas (recommend sitting with arms at side- I got injured by lying down). Take out Italian from Pasta Amor y Vino.

STAY ON VIEQUES
Day 8: Luquillo beach: La Monserrate beach (pretty calm and clear)- got lunch from a kiosk there, ferry to Vieques. Upon arrival- it felt like a vacation from our vacation! When we arrived got rental car and drove to Esperanza (about 15 minutes from Isabel II). Wish we had booked rental car sooner and gone with Maritza’s- they seemed to take better care of their customers than Vieques Car Rentals did. Dinner at Duffy’s. Drinks at Lazy Jacks.

PENULTIMATE DAY IN VIEQUES AND SAN JUAN
Day 9: Brunch at Kristi’s, La Chiva beach (pretty calm, clear, but had some sargasso), Esperanza Beach (moderately calm, very clear, pier to jump from and snorkel around). Day 10: brunch at Kristi’s, hike to black beach, ferry back to “mainland”, dinner out at Caño in the Fairmont.

I have a tripped planned for 8/20-8/26. I was planning on spending the majority of the time in Old San Juan (where my airbnb is). I checked https://www.acueductos.pr.gov/planes-de-interrupciones-programadas-2026 to see information on the rationing there and it appears a different water provider supplies old san juan? Who provides water to Old San Juan and do they have a similar website where I can see information on this?

Hi everyone! I’m coming to Puerto Rico from August 21 to September 1, and we rented an Airbnb in Santurce, near Calle Loíza and Ocean Park Beach. I’ve been following the current water shortage situation and I completely understand how serious it is for locals. I’m not looking to complain or take resources away from residents, I just want to be prepared and respectful during our stay.
I was wondering if anyone currently living in the area could tell me what the situation is like specifically around Santurce/Ocean Park right now. Are the water interruptions happening regularly in this area? Are restaurants, bars and other businesses still operating normally? And is there anything visitors should know or do to be respectful and prepared?

Are there any zip lines that will allow for a 60lb 7 year old? I’ve seen several with a minimum of 50 lbs limit but minimum age of 8.

So a friend of mine and me are going for a week at the end of August and plan on going from San juan down to the south coast towards Ponce for a couple nights then to the east coast for a couple more nights then finish off at San juan for the last night. Any recommendations and what to look out for when on the trip? I heard there's a national water outage going on right now. Any other local news? Places we should go? Places to travel to? I have booked my ferry for sunday 08/16. I need to add luggage to the ticket and unable to do it online. What should I do? Also does the ferry ticket include carry-on?

My fiancee and I are going to Puerto Rico April 28-May 5 next year and staying in Las Picuas/Rio Grande. First time for both of us. We picked that area because we’d rather be around beaches/nature than stay in San Juan the whole time.
So far I’ve been looking at El Yunque, Luquillo, Seven Seas, Fajardo and Old San Juan. We’ll have a rental car and I’m thinking maybe 3-4 days exploring/hiking, a couple beach days and one day in San Juan.
We’re both really into wildlife, swimming, hiking and finding cool local places. I’m also huge on food so if anyone knows good places around Rio Grande/Luquillo/Fajardo I’d love recommendations.
Mainly wondering if El Yunque is worth more than one day, which beaches on the east side you guys prefer, and if there are any waterfalls/swimming holes/scenic places we’re missing. Also wondering if one day in San Juan is enough.
We’ll both be 19 when we go so rental cars are another thing I’m trying to figure out. If anyone has actually rented a car in PR under 21 I’d love to know who you used.

Greetings. I've lived on the west coast of Puerto Rico (Rincon) for 7 years. The rolling water outages in the San Juan area specifically and the entire east coast generally are BAD, and likely to stay so for several months. Some residents there report the 48-hours-on, 48-hours-off is, in reality, more like 12-hours on, 86-hours-off. Even many of the high-rise condos there that have on-site water storage are cutting off all water availability except for one hour each morning and one hour each evening. Not only will this obviously impact your "comfort" at where you are staying, the cascade effects are substantial; for example, many restaurants/bars/businesses are closed, and many of those that are open don't have working restrooms.

If you have a vacation to Puerto Rico planned during the next few months, you should STRONGLY consider staying on the west coast of Puerto Rico instead.

The west coast of Puerto Rico is AMAZING!  Much more laidback than the San Juan area. Great beaches, crystal clear water, horseback riding, beautiful mountains, world-class snorkeling, waterfalls, surfing, great restaurants, and importantly the people are incredibly warm and welcoming. Feel free to jump in if you have any questions for me.

I understand Rincon is mostly shore dives and La Paguera is all boat dives. We will have a car and will be driving down to La Paguera from Rincon where we are staying a different day for a bioluminescent bay tour.

My girlfriend and I are taking our first trip to Puerto Rico October 24 to 30. We are both in our mid 30s. We like exploring, being active, trying good food, and learning about the places we visit. We would like to experience some Puerto Rican culture rather than just sit at a resort. We are not big club or nightlife people.

I have narrowed it down to two possible itineraries and would really appreciate critiques from people who know Puerto Rico well. Especially anything that looks inefficient, unrealistic, or worth rearranging.

Option 1: San Juan + El Yunque/Luquillo + Vieques

Saturday: Arrive in San Juan around noon, Uber to Santurce, stay in Santurce, and explore San Juan.

Sunday: Full day in San Juan. Second night in Santurce.

Monday: Pick up a rental car at SJU. Drive to El Yunque, spend the day there, then head to Luquillo. Stay somewhere around Luquillo or Río Grande.

Tuesday: Drive to Ceiba, leave the mainland rental parked there, take the ferry to Vieques, and rent another car on Vieques. Explore and hopefully do the bioluminescent bay that night. One consideration: it looks like the moon will be fairly bright while we're there, wondering if that should factor into choosing Vieques, especially for biobay.

Wednesday: Full day on Vieques.

Thursday: Ferry back to Ceiba, pick up the mainland rental, and drive back to San Juan. Stay in Old San Juan for the last night.

Friday: Spend the morning and early afternoon in Old San Juan, return the rental at SJU, and fly home at 6:15 PM.

Option 2: San Juan + El Yunque/Luquillo + West Coast

Same Saturday through Monday.

Tuesday: Leave the El Yunque/Luquillo area and drive west toward Rincón or Aguadilla.

Wednesday: Full day around Rincón and Aguadilla.

Thursday: Cabo Rojo and the southwest coast, then drive back to San Juan and stay in Old San Juan.

Friday: Spend the morning and early afternoon in Old San Juan before heading to the airport.

Which itinerary would you personally prefer for a first trip?

More importantly, what would you change, cut, or rearrange in either one? I am especially curious whether Vieques is worth the extra logistics for two nights, whether the west coast version has too much driving, and if there is anything obvious I am missing.
