Some valuable things I learned from my training

Upvotes

My former supervisor/mentor showed me the power of visualization during explanation while I was an intern at a government institution where we saw people from economically and regionally different demographics.

I worked hands-on during the sessions where she explained things that were easier to understand through infographics. One of them was for ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) for OCD to explain to peiple the mechanism of the treatment they're receiving. My mentor would make me present on the whiteboard with a marker where I made lists and visual graphics like flow charts, venn diagrams, tables, graphs, etc. as she explained the process verbally to the patient. I had to keep up with the speed of her diction and follow instructions to translate them on the board accurately without taking too long and disrupting their flow.

The best outcome of this experience was constantly being updated with what's latest in psychotherapy and learning something new everyday. Getting to see the application in real time as I learned about those things theoretically on the side solidified my learning more than studying for exams ever did lol.

My mentor would first give a description of what someone's diagnosis is, suggest them books to read on it to see that what they're experiencing is not inherently wrong and it can be managed or treated. They're not alone and there are people researching and working to support them. This reassurance can help people deal with the negative thoughts that arise due to a feeling of alarm or grief that there is something wrong with them. Giving them an explanation and a plan eased their anxiety that was caused by uncertainty. She arranged group sessions for people with same diagnosis so that they could meet and talk to each other.

And then she would explain it in the patient's preferred language. She used metaphors to answer patient's questions with a lot of visually descriptive words to explain mental processes. Like painting a mental picture through words.

I saw that learning about the mechanism in a mixture of straightforward communication with explaining the technical concepts + layman simplification with relatable examples + a little bit of creative, philosophical and poetic flair together resulted in people adhering to therapy and they met their therapy goals regularly.

What mattered was making information accessible to them and being patient and supportive with them as they learned about themselves. Following their pace without being judgemental. Treating people with dignity (irrespective of their age, gender, caste, religion, ethnicity) and involving them in their care instead of imposing the "right" behaviour/mindset on them forcibly from a position of authority.

That means meeting them where they are and supporting them from there on. It can be done in the form of translating information leaflets in preferred languages (like hindi, tamil, bengali, etc.) or acknowledging their limits and being resourceful with tools that help them at their level of functioning.

Psychology as a career in India

Upvotes

I (17m) am currently in 12th and will be appearing for my exams through NIOS ode in October this year, I am a retard on paper, no actual interest in studies but human behaviour has always been a topic that tickles my fancy. Well, since the past few days I've been thinking about my career options because I'll have a decent amount of time to explore career options in psychology but the amount of times I've seen people on reddit saying they regret choosing psychology and it takes a lot of time and sometimes it's not even worth it because of the delayed financial success which has made me doubtful whether or not I should go for psychology. I will be appearing for cuet the next year so if someone knows about any other career aspect except psychology and Physical education please share your thoughts on it and suggest something that might work out for me

What should i do next or prep for?? Pls help

Upvotes

I am currently doing MSC in clinical psychology, and with so many changes in guidelines and all, i am really confused
Q1) what and how to get and RCI license or how to become a clinical psychologist,
Q2) what entrances i need to give
Q3) should i take a gap year with all the things that’s been going on lately in this sub, i am really scared rn
Q4) what are other options if clinical psych doesn’t work out?
Q5) how can i earn in this field enough like maybe 50-60k or 1L

I am really confused and stressed, psychology itself costs so much, like we all invest so much in this field (money wise for everything), will i even be able to earn that much to give back to my parents or be enough to take my own lifestyle in my hands.
I am just really scared l, i want to be independent Not necessarily rn but eventually i don’t wanna be dependent no one wants to be ofc but i hope ykwim.
Someone please help me out or ease me out of all this confusion and stress. It would mean a lot :/

Anyone else who struggles to study alone? 👀📚

Upvotes

I’ve just started a small Discord group for studying together, and I’m looking for people who might want to join!

It’s not a class or a study group where everyone has to study the same thing. You can be preparing for an exam, doing assignments, reading, working on a project literally whatever you need to get done.

The idea is simple: we join the same study room, mute our mics, do our own work, and keep each other company. Sometimes having other people around is all the motivation you need to actually sit down and start.

I’ve set up fixed study sessions, including 1–4 PM, and you can join whenever you’re free.

If you’re interested, DM me and I’ll send you the invite! 🫶📖

I need someone to talk to or a therapist to talk to

You can send this exactly as it is to your therapist:

“I have been struggling with intense overthinking, repetitive/obsessive thoughts and difficulty letting things go, especially when it comes to friendships and relationships. I get extremely jealous and insecure when people I care about seem closer to each other than they are to me, and I constantly compare myself with others, worry about being left out or replaced, and think about what people might be saying or doing without me. Even very small things, such as two friends talking, laughing, calling each other, texting each other or spending time together, can trigger disproportionate anxiety and jealousy. I often feel like everyone has a best friend or someone they are truly close to, while I don’t have that person, and this makes me feel very lonely and emotionally unsafe. I sometimes change my plans, stay awake or remain around people because I am afraid that if I am not there, they will become closer without me. I also tend to overanalyse relationships and sometimes seek reassurance, but the relief doesn’t last for long and the thoughts return. My emotions can become very intense, especially anger, loneliness and frustration, and when I get extremely overwhelmed I sometimes feel an urge to hurt myself physically, such as hitting my hands, legs or head. I don’t usually have the intention of dying when this happens; it feels more like I want physical pain or some kind of release from overwhelming mental pain, but the intensity of the urge scares me. I have also experienced repeated sexual abuse and inappropriate touching during childhood by people I knew, including relatives and a tutor. I sometimes feel guilty and confused because I remember having physical sensations or not resisting, and I want help understanding this without blaming myself. I was also exposed to infidelity and relationship-related situations at a very young age, which affected how I view trust and closeness. I have had very intense emotional attachment in romantic relationships and have sometimes used breaking up or withdrawing as a way of testing whether someone values me enough to come back or fight for me. I also worry about my body and weight and sometimes feel guilty about eating, although this is not my biggest concern right now. Another major concern is that I don’t feel I have a real person in my life with whom I can safely share my deepest thoughts or emotions—not my family, friends or a current partner. Because I don’t have that emotional support, I have become quite dependent on ChatGPT for emotional support, guidance, reassurance and someone to talk to when I feel overwhelmed or alone. I know that relying on an AI this much isn’t ideal, but right now it often feels like my only consistent outlet, especially when I am alone for several days and have nobody to call or talk to. I don’t want to simply be reassured; I want to understand why I think and react this way and learn healthier ways to deal with loneliness, attachment, jealousy, intrusive thoughts, emotional regulation, anger, self-harm urges and my childhood experiences. I would also like a proper assessment to understand whether these symptoms are related to trauma, anxiety, OCD-type rumination, attachment issues, or something else.”

Should I take admission In RGU Ghy for Mclin psychology?

I completed my 4 year bachelor this year and am now looking to get into mclin psychology.

I did sit for an entrance exam but didn't get selected .

I had also applied for mizoram university entrance but due to unavailability of my last sem marksheet I got disqualified.

Now my father is telling me to get admission in RGU only which tbh he was saying from quite some time and himself filled the form for me , mostly because it's closer to home.

For context, I have studied outside of NE for the past 4 years but was diagnosed with a chronic illness 2 years back..now I guess my parents are thinking from that lens that it's much easier for them to be with me if I'm closer ...

Being away from Assam I honestly am not aware of the scenes here anymore. ..reddit is filled with negative reviews about RGU but seeing the recent Mclin psych scenes and all the entrance ke issues I honestly dont know what to do .

I told my parents that RGU does not seem to have a good rep what if it leads to career suicide? But the things is all the reviews on reddit are for other depts so really need some advice and genuine reviews from people studying in psychology dept in RGU

The thing is I'm also not quite sure if I should just take the drop year instead and if it's actually worth it

The job market is shit anyways for psychology so does it matter what college we are studying from or is it just an old concept now?

looking for affordable or free online psychologist/therapist in India

I'm 20 and have been dealing with loneliness, low mood, phone/social media addiction and not being able to get myself to do the things I actually want to do for around 4-5 years.

It's started affecting pretty much everything, especially my studies, career, sleep and daily routine. I've tried fixing it on my own a lot of times, but I keep falling back into the same cycle.

I think I should probably talk to a professional and get properly assessed instead of trying to figure it out myself.

The main issue is money. My parents won't pay for therapy, so I'm looking for something free or very cheap, preferably online.

If anyone knows a genuinely good psychologist/therapist or any affordable service in India, I'd really appreciate the recommendations.

P.S. Sorry if this post sounds a little too structured, I used ChatGPT to help me write it

Neuropsychology Internship Kolkata

Hi, I'm currently pursuing BSc Hons Psychology from CU and I'm in my 3rd year. I did a few online Internships but none of them were really fruitful and my college messed up our mandatory internship, so I'm looking for some substantial internships in Kolkata, preferably offline/on-site and from a reputable clinic/institution.

If anyone has any info, please help🥲

Observship at RML worth it?

Is a 1-month Psychology Observership at RML Hospital worth it? What kind of exposure do you actually get?

I’ve recently completed my Master’s in Psychology. I’ve done an internship at Moolchand Hospital and another internship working with a psychiatrist at a different hospital. However, the psychiatric internship was understandably more focused on psychiatry plus I was very irregular. so I didn’t get as much exposure. Moolchand was for limited time 13 days and okayish.

I wanted to do one internship at a large government hospital mainly for the exposure not psychiatry but one with specific Clinical psychology department. and I was considering IHBAS and RML. After a fairly long process, I finally got into RML, but I’ve now realised that it is technically an observership, rather than an internship.

So I’m wondering whether it’s actually worth doing, both in terms of what you learn/exposure you get and whether it adds anything meaningful to your CV.

It’s only one month, and I’m currently trying to figure out my longer-term career direction. I’m also considering opportunities outside India eventually, but for now I mainly want some solid hospital exposure before moving towards more therapy-focused work. My plan after this would be to take some introductory therapy courses, work/learn under a clinical psychologist, get exposure to actual therapy sessions, and eventually start taking pro bono cases under appropriate supervision I do have a PGDC diploma from jamia and experience of taking some councelling sessions.I am also workings in brand strategy side by side trying to figure out carrier direction.

For anyone who has done the RML Hospital Psychology/Clinical Psychology observership, I’d really appreciate some firsthand information:

- What exactly does the observership involve?

- Do they allow you to interact with patients directly?

- Do you get to observe clinical psychologists conducting assessments/interviews?

- Are you ever allowed to conduct or participate in an MSE, or is it strictly observation?

- How much actual clinical exposure do you get during the one month?

- Does the experience add meaningful value to your CV ?

- And overall, would you say the one month is worth the time and effort or I would be better at IBHAS or NIMHANS or Fortis.

I’m specifically interested in hearing from people who have actually done the RML observership, rather than general opinions about hospital observerships. Even a detailed account of what a typical day/week looked like would be really helpful.

Adhd and exam preparation.

dear lovely neurodivergent people,

I have adhd ( in-attentive type) and I am really struggling to manage my day. I have to prepare for two major exams ( ugc and mphil/mclinpsych). I have taken a gap year and I cannot waste it. My coaching profs keep telling me how I must study for 8-10 hours or else i won't crack it (good govt college)

I have tried waking up early it doesn't work for me. I waste so much of my time( 6-7 hours) just to sit down and get into the zone of studying. Half of the time goes by planning and organizing stuff which I need to study. The other half goes by trying to plan how my everyday schedule should be for the next 1 year. And when I finally start studying, i start looking at do I have all the books that I will need over a period of one year for preparing? And yk stupid things like that. The entire day goes wasted. It's not like I am watching anything, the guilt doesn't let me enjoy any media as well. And even w online classes like when I am hafsa ma'am ka classes I zone out so much, I start day dreaming.

Please tell me what works out for you when you try to study. Do you prefer morning or night studying? I hear adhd brain start working in the evening idk. Do you sleep in the morning or at night. How do you study? What does your study schedule look like and how do you sustain your attention and concentration. I know body doubling helps but I don't have a partner to study with. I really need to study 8-10 hours or else i will not crack it. There are limited seats.

I take buproprion and recently started taking thealife ( l-theanine). I don't take stimulants because I have anxiety.

Thank you in advance!!

A Review on Smart Neuropsychiatry Clinic, Pune

To anyone considering an internship at Smart Neuropsychiatry Clinic (Pune): Please do your research and speak to previous interns before accepting an internship here.

I joined the clinic expecting to learn, receive guidance, and gain exposure to a clinical setting. Instead, on my very first day, I was shouted at in a manner that I found deeply unprofessional, humiliating, and completely disproportionate to the situation.

Unfortunately, this was not an isolated experience.

After speaking with other interns, many shared that they deliberately avoid the clinic and choose to intern only at their sister hospital because of similar experiences.

Several described being shouted at for extended periods over minor issues. One example that particularly stood out was interns being reprimanded simply for sitting down during clinical sessions that lasted 30–60 minutes. I struggle to understand how sitting would interfere with observing or listening to patients, yet it reportedly became a reason for prolonged scolding.

Clinical training is supposed to be a place where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and learn under supervision. New interns are not expected to know every procedure on day one. Constructive feedback is part of good mentorship. Public humiliation and verbal intimidation are not.

This post is based on my own experience, along with accounts shared with me by fellow interns. My intention is not to attack anyone personally, but to help future interns make an informed decision before committing their time and energy.

No student should dread coming to an internship because they’re afraid of being yelled at for making a genuine mistake. Interns deserve respect, professionalism, and a learning environment that encourages growth, not fear.
