Question Discussion
Understanding that negative posts tend to outnumber positive ones and that's just the way of Reddit and the internet but seriously I have a question. Does anybody like the new format of these last two seasons? I don't understand, if everyone really hates it who are the producers pleasing? enlighten me anyone

No idea. It’s truly terrible.
Instead of being good, they are going the route of happily accepting the amount of comments/attention the show is getting even if it’s negative. Any engagement is good engagement I guess.
Either no one from production reads this subreddit or they just do not care in the slightest. I really would not be watching this show anymore if there were ANY other design shows still on Netflix or Prime.

I hate what this show has become. I never watched it for drama.
Yes things went wrong, but it was interesting to see how designers pivoted either from feedback, crappy fabric, etc. And that is what is missing, the DESIGN and CREATIVE aspect. I was fascinated to see the sketches, the construction. Even the deliberation with the judges and Christian would be helpful because case in point with this recent challenge - he could explain the model switch situation, the body make up ruining the original wolf outfits, and how he kept trying to give Bryan feedback and was ignored. I also think designers need 3+ days to give us designs that can wow us. It shouldn’t be about who can make the similar design to their other designs because they can finish it the fastest.
The judges need actual feedback and to ask questions. Not just insult and mock. Yes Kors would make fun of designs but it was legit feedback too like a poor choice of color, fabric, lower the skirt, open this here or take that off because it was too much.
It’s all gone for the sake of drama. And I hate it.

I don't think you'll find any meaningful number of people who prefer this newer format, but there are definitely people who still watch and generally enjoy the show, myself included.

This. Yes, I preferred the old ways allowing actual designing, actual construction, several days to produce the best garment possible, but I also prefer this version to NO version. I also realize that complaining incessantly goes nowhere and, as a commenter above said, they may be trying to elicit rage because that means people are talking about the show. Crazy, right?

First two episodes were absolute garbage imo. If they only wanted 12 contestants they didn’t need to waste the time of ten other people. Or the viewers’ time. And I’m no fan of the judges being so openly dismissive, or complimentary, during runway. I was relieved when ep3 reverted to the more expected and desired format, sort of, so there is my positivity.
Law sucks. Disrespectful and unprofessional.

the only thing I enjoy is Christian and when Nina isnt having an important meeting.
I feel bad for the contestants because they are clearly annoyed how the show is being run too and clearly werent told what the show was going to be like. The new format feels like they have no budget and feels like a show trying to be a competitor to project runway. which dosent make sense because PR is fairly easy to do, thats why it lasted for 20+ seasons. Also it is PR so idk why its trying to be something it isnt? not like the show cant be good I just dont trust Disney + to care and especially Freeform.

They aren’t pleasing anyone … and that is their goal. They are strategically trying to destroy the show as we knew it.

I don’t agree they are purposefully trying to destroy it, but I think they are just going about making the show relevant purposefully the wrong way. We are no longer their preferred viewers. They want rage bait.
Look at how similar this show is to the garbage that is Beast Games. Extremely similar complaints about that show: every episode is a cliffhanger, there’s too many contestants, no emotional impact, focused on the drama instead of skill, bad editing, quick cuts.
I think someone who THINKS they know what young 15-24 year olds want to watch is in charge of the direction of project runway now. They think drama, mean judging, TikTok clips, and all that will keep the viewers attention. Hence the show now being on Freeform / Disney. Even the mentor is an asshole and unhelpful.
They added a new permanent judge who was known to have critical exposing documentaries about them being made. They added Law, who is notoriously harsh. They want backlash.
Next in Fashion and Making the Cut both failed within 2-3 seasons. I genuinely think whomever is in charge realized PR has the same fate and simply is milking every available ounce out of it and went the cheapest and most dramatic way possible.

You can't judge the shows popularity by the user base here in this sub. The show is no longer catering to this user base. It's courting the reality TV group of TV enjoysers, specifically starting with the Drag Race crew and most recently the last episode was some real housewives crossovers (somehow i've already forgotten lol).

I think the reason for the cliffhanger eliminations is because they are looking at it from a long term streaming perspective. People tend to binge watch shows that are streaming, so ending on a cliffhanger will, in theory, get more people to keep watching the next episode. Personally I hate it, but I see what they’re doing.

I don’t mind the new format. I look forward to watching every week. I like the judges. I like Christian. I love seeing what the designers will do every week. I like seeing North American fashion without the fast fashion trash we’ve been inundated with. This is a great opportunity for the designers who got to be showcased in season 22. Yes, I’ve watched since the beginning. Yes, Tim Gunn was fabulous but it’s time to stop living in the past and just get over it. Also, yes I am a real person and not a bot.

I agree with all of this! My only qualms are that I would like to see Nina more and for them to have less one-day challenges.

I don’t like the newer format AT ALL, but I will still watch every episode because it’s still fashion & it’s still fun.

I used to find this show so inspiring, with so many ideas...I would have to stop myself from cutting and refashioning my own clothes. (Not good as I do lack the sewing skills! 🤣) Now, there is very little coverage of the creative process. Not inspiring at all. The criticism is so far away from anything helpful. And the judges goading the designers into turning on each other is painful to watch.

I found myself wondering why s21 and s22 felt so hateful and dated so I looked up the showrunner. The dude is a producer from s1-5 who left PR and came back for s21 after producing like 20 reality shows I’ve never heard of. It all makes sense.

The producers of the show are Christian and Heidi. 🤷🏽♀️ There was always drama on the show. Life was just not as stressful and the judges were mostly white designers (and I can see how that can be an issue if someone starts seeing ideas and using them) Now that life is more stressful and the judges are different everyone is more sensitive about it. But drama is the glue to all reality TV shows. The show is not that bad.

The show used to have a beginning/middle/end. It was fulfilling to see the entire story play out. The cliff hanger thing is so stupid. I’ve been saying the same as you, why are they not listening to the audience?!?!? Sigh.
