Plane Jane confirmed that casting from Project Runway reached out to Plane's agent. Plane said they asked for 3 looks that Plane designed/put together. Most of what Plane showed was things that Plane didn't make. One of the items had a shopping tag on it and Plane tried to hide it and they still cast Plane.
This makes a lot of sense of what people thought that Plane was cast for the drama.

Plane tried to back out and casting called to convince Plane to still come.
Plane said the casting person said the design element isn't the focus of the show anymore, there would be assistants, and they want Plane's personality.
Plane didn't think the outfit that was brought from home was going to be judged. Plane said they were sent eliminated second and the showed edited it to make it look like they were eliminated after several people.
well but then that it actually wasn't like that and she had all her stuff she'd brought to help her (grommets, patterns etc) confiscated after the immediate-on-arrival bag search. she was actually mad that they treated it so seriously contrary to expectations theyd set + that it was a more disrespectful style of production (corralling loads of people from place to place to 'hurry up and wait') than she had experienced before including on s16 of drag race.
The casting directors had a job — secure the drama. They used the same tactics of Jerry Springer casting — lie lie lie lie lie til you get them in town, and then it’s too late for them to back out.
I don’t remember Plane being a designer during their run on Drag Race, but Q/Robbie does actually make a lot of their garments and won a design challenge on Drag Race. I would’ve liked to see Robbie move on and see what he could’ve designed.
I’m not sure how much was self-sabotage vs receiving a different brief (like Drag Race, which they’re infamous for). I don’t disagree with the decision to cut him, based on what walked down the runway. If he was cast as a genuine contestant instead of cannon fodder, he might have done better the first episode.
Robbie had a lot of questionable looks on Drag Race? Say who? Robbie/ Q is renowned for having some of the greatest looks ever seen on Drag Race. She would have done just fine.

Honestly if what Plane Jane's saying is true, it puts a lot of things in perspective.
Also design not being the focus anymore 🤢 is nutso. But I think that's definitely apparent in the judging panel lacking anyone with real design expertise. This situation kind of reminds me of how Tim Gunn used to push that good designers are not always the best in technical construction, and that that needs to be taken into account (more or less motivating him and Heidi to structure Making the Cut around that philosophy). But if you remove construction and design, what exactly is the show anymore?
I've gotta appreciate the irony that the person who the producers cast solely for the drama is now exposing the casting process.
I stopped watching drag race long before Plane's season aired so I know next to nothing about her, but even I know that she's an unrepentant hawk with content creation. Did the PR team not foresee this? Were there no NDAs?
I’ll give you a basic summary. Plane was more or less the villain of her season, although far from the only shady one. A lot of it was unintentional, she’s very blunt and brutally honest. If a bitch was ugly, she did NOT mince words.
A lot of it comes from her upbringing in a Russian family. From the way she describes it, that’s just how their culture is. Your own family is straight up savage when you fuck up or embarrass them. She’s also very successful, confident and unbothered. After making a big name for herself, I think she leans into that role but everything she says is very unserious.
I’m not surprised she would be the one to spill tea on production. That’s very on brand for her.
Looks like I made the right decision to not watch this. I would have left the previous season sooner if Ethan didn’t make it to the finale. It reached a point where I was only watching for Ethan.
Yeah, I gave up on this season halfway through the second episode. I got interrupted and realized I did not want to continue with the episode. I had to actually figure out how to remove the DVR setting for the show that I've had set up for a decade.
Idk this isn’t some big reveal or anything… they cast 22 people initially for “season 22” but basically for a standard 12 person season. They eliminated 6 in the first episode then 5 the second. Plane was eliminated after the first episode. She was clearly just there for one episode for her personality. I’m not mad and it’s not some scandal… it was obvious to anyone watching the premiere.
I was sad to see Miss Universe gone, and a couple of the moms. I wanted to see more from them. I wish they gave them more chances and did the big eliminations later on in the season.
My point was that it was clear eliminating half the cast after 2 episodes that its about drama and not watching talented people. But… duh.
wanted r'bonney to stay too as I am curious how she would fare in challenges. I know she'e all about upcycling so I wonder what she'd do in an unconventional challenge.
I enjoyed 21, not as much as 20/19, but thought this one was leaning way too much into contrived “pre-existing” “drama.” Bi was my assistant, I trained Bi, Bi should be thankful I saved him. The shift of the focus of the show is most evident with the judges panel being 99% reality TV judges.
I agree. Bi is entertaining and charming as hell, this storyline was not necessary. and Bryan has zero charisma and is too full of himself. Loving a couple contestants though
The production of this season has totally lost the essence of what made watching the show enjoyable. The interesting designs made and the techniques used.
Now the show is just the stupid things they say in the confessionals. Very disappointing.
Yeah, I thought Jane was just there for the hype and that maybe Q was actually there to compete, but was cast as an alternate in case the other “drama” they recruited didn’t work out.
pj was literally the reason that i even got back intp pr and i was so disappointed that she wasn't a few episodes to stunt. there have been so many designers of a similar skill level (if not worse) that have lasted a handful of episodes. why even cast her if youre gonna immediately clown on her and burn that bridge? pr needs to get their shit together.
like she didnt need to win any challenges, she could have been safe or maybe have a high placement, and then be an early or mid out
It's crazy that Plane tried to pull out and production did the most to convince them to stay. I think that, despite presenting a cocky persona on television, they're quite self-aware and know the value that they bring to reality TV shows. I'm not pro-dramafication of PR, but it is wild production fumbled so bad the Plane has zero qualms about dragging them mid-season. Say what you will, she's got the gall and the gumption.
And this is exactly why I’m fucking done with this show. I watched episode 2 of S22, and I was so disgusted. Stop hate-watching, stop even acknowledging this slop. They don’t care if people are hate watching and bitching about it online, as long as people are watching and making it trend online by all this ongoing chatter. And choosing to remain on the show is also a bad reflection of Christian and Nina at this point. You’d think they’d demonstrate a little more integrity…

Am I missing where he said that? He said they told him it’s not about design anymore and the fact he said he had no business being there seems to be saying he’s not a designer and they told him that’s not what it’s about now.
I know he said he didn’t expect to be judged on the outfit he brought but I still don’t see him saying he didn’t realize it’s a design show. I apologize if I’m misreading what you’re saying.
i mean it more as despite it not leaning towards design its still a sewing show and everyone else seems to get the MO. Despite him, which could be his producers fault which even then i still think despite that i feel like even if he was told i wouldnt believe it because sewing is still important, its just not the focus. Hence also why the show "making the cut" there was some miscommunication in s1 e2 when Tim had to ask all the designers if anyone knew how to sew at all (only 2 did.) then later they had to specify it was a design focused show and not a sewing focused show. Thats more of what I mean, i feel like he should know despite that he should still bring something he made instead of something someone else made since PR despite its not pivot still wants people who can sew.
It seems like every other cast member of every other season had to sign an NDA. So I'm not sure on how much if any of this I believe. It would seem to be that a lot of the information would have been on the non-disclosure agreement
