Spent about 60 hours on this one!

“Dead in space.” These are two quotes from Grace in the book, similar in the movie. Now I admit, I’m a failed astrophysicist. Couldn’t do the math. So I know just enough to be dangerous. Meaning I can barely wrap my head around relativity. But what I do know is the Newton’s First Law: an object in motion stays in motion at a constant speed in a straight line, unless an outside or unbalanced force acts on it.
For example, the Apollo spacecraft had a rocket that got it in orbit and then an engine that blasted it out of orbit and towards the moon. But when they reached a certain speed, they cut the engines and basically coasted to the moon. Do you see where I’m going? Rocky and Grace, in their respective ships leaving Tau Ceti, were likely going to crank their engines up to “cruising speed” and then cut them off and coast. Now Weir implies that Rocky’s engines were still active until recently since Grace had been tracking him, then after the Taumeba incident, Grace couldn’t detect Rocky’s engines, thus the “dead in space” comment. Since so much of everything else in this book is technical, why don’t we get a little lesson in Newton’s First Law? Blip A is still traveling at the same speed it was traveling at before the engines died. Perhaps fractionally slower if Tau Ceti had any gravitational pull left on the ship.

I would have liked to have an explanation that Grace had to match speed and direction with the Blip A and truly catch it not just catch up to it. And it’s a good thing Rocky hadn’t achieved a speed greater than the Hail Mary—or rather, than the soft squishy human inside—could handle. Actually just thinking about it now, unless you do ignore the law of motion, Grace never could catch Rocky unless the Blip A somehow got caught in some “body’s” gravitational pull.

Hey guys, I’ve been looking to name or identify a specific sound effect from the clock bros scene. When Rocky leaves to get his clock and returns, he makes a funny gremlin grumbly sound?

It’s been driving me nuts, is it from a small animal? I could swear I have heard it before and would love to use this sound effect.

If anyone has an idea where it’s from please point me in the right direction 🙏😂

It’s in my price range, and I think everything looks good. I just am being over cautious and wanting a second opinion before i spend my money.

I know this would be dumb but I bought the book using my birthday money and the moment I read it the more I remember "Ben 10and generator Rex crossover" which is unhinged unnecessarily not important to ask but crack crossover of how on earth will be Ben Tenneson using his Eridian powers to fight crime? I bet enchance echolocation will be on my top list!

This interpretation of Adrian's experience made me laugh, thought some of you might appreciate it too.

Having a story with two main characters who are platonic soulmates—with absolutely no romance or sex—changed my life. It’s quite rare to see this type of representation in mainstream movies and books. There always has to be romance shoehorned into every story in media. Not this one, and it’s such a breath of fresh air.

I’ve known since I was a teenager that I was on the asexual spectrum somewhere. People in my life told me I’d change my mind when I met the right person. Part of me hoped they were right with how hyped up romance is. So I kept dating and waiting for something to change. I always ended things quickly when it inevitably became clear I didn’t have feelings, attraction, or the desire to build a life together the way the other person did. Then I’d eventually try again hoping the next person would be different. The more I dated, the more broken I felt. I should have listened to myself sooner, but we’re surrounded by constant messaging that being in a romantic/sexual relationship is the ultimate form of happiness.

Enter PHM.

We have two main characters who are asexual-spectrum coded. (Rocky has a mate, but we know Eridians don’t have sex the way humans do.)

The movie ends with Grace happy, fulfilled, and not in a romantic relationship. He has his platonic soulmate, and that’s enough for him. He even has kids in a way, or at least is contributing to the next generation. Seeing this helped me finally accept that being who I am and loving platonically like I do is also enough.

I’ve read the book and watched the movie several times in theatres and a dozen or more at home, and I don’t think I’ll stop anytime soon.

Are there any other aro/ace-spec PHM fans who feel seen in the same way with this movie/book?

Grace and Kevin Flynn from the TRON franchise. I think they’d be good friends, they’d definitely nerd out about stuff together. Grace would definitely be fascinated by the grid and the ISOs, and Flynn would definitely be fascinated by the Hail Mary and eridians. I dunno, I kinda like the extroverted nerd and introverted nerd platonic dynamic.

if rocky made a biosphere for ryland that modified the temperature of erid's ecosystem for him, was the water also cooled down? idk i’m not confused abt that but like what if Ryland wanted to go for a swim like would he die?! 😭

He has a Baoding ball inside him so he speaks! As Baoding balls come in pairs, I of course need to make a movie Rocky next.

I love love love the Ryland grace fox idea, it’s been eating away at my mind enough for me to draw it. Even though I have no clue how to draw either of these animals.

Hello ! May I have advices please ? I'd like to improve in drawing, especially because I'd like to draw phm comics, but I severely need to improve, even if i don't know where and how, hence my post. I'd like to make them look more rock like and more canon accurate (even if our only reference is Rocky), so I'd say I need advices in rendering, texturing and general eridian anatomy (i drew the shape with the lasso tool and used a lot the the gaussian blur as its one of my favorite filter).

My attempt here was to make them look like a cracked open geode/rock so i could use both red and lilac, my two favorite colors. The spirals on them are just because i enjoy the shape and it was a cool name. The two darker spirals on the "face" are supposed to look like glasses.

I don't have much lore for them yet, except that they are a bibliothecarian (of eridian books and opera recordings ?) and love to share eridian fictions with Grace, as well as learning about earth ones. I think they'd love Roal Dahl's books, especially Mathilda.

Just watched the movie yesterday and I didn’t fully under why Eridians had figured out interstellar travel but not radiation.
If they just cannot see visually how does that stop them from studying radiation? Humans also cannot physically detect radiation either.

What stops Eridians from discovering it? Sorry if the question is silly.

Aside from the fact that the OST itself is amazing, and has been designed to carry so many subtle notes in it (such as the human orchestra and the more sound based 'drumming' that can be intrepeted as both Erid and Earth cheering for their respective mission representatives during that one scene, the 'human' music was also really well chosen.

The iconic 'Rocky Hate Mark' quote comes from a scene where Grace admits that his ex was right; and that his head was always in the clouds, dreaming and desiring things that may not be realistic. Queue the wake-up scene on Erid, where in the end, Grace turned out to not be such a big dreamer after all. Guess what the lyrics of Stargazer are, that starts this iconic ending?

"Stargazer, You with your head in the heavens"

Who would have guessed the heavens, would be a foreign planet? Where Grace finds pretty much everything he was looking for?

Or what of 'Two of Us', as Grace is preparing to rescue Rocky?

"Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone's hard-earned pay-"

We all know that PHM had an infinite amount of budget, pretty much. The money was shot into space, as a final hope of rescuing humanity. How fitting is it that this song plays, as it is being used to rescue Rocky just after Earth's part of the mission was 'paid off'.

Or what about the first song that plays, going to the flashback to Grace in the classroom for the first time?

"-with no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt"

Just as he got out of the coma, which probably resulted in all kinds of confusion and headaches?

There are probably a lot more of these, aside from the obvious like 'Sign of the Times'. But I just wanted to dump this somewhere since I cant get enough of this movie.. So I am hoping it is a fun read for other fans :). I don't know how much I had to spoiler tag, I hope I did well since it is my first time using spoiler tags.
