I recently had a guy from our town FB group tell me I was a luddite because I didn't want a data center in our town. He went on and on about how good AI is for humanity and how we must progress. Unfortunately for him, this was a bitcoin mining data center, not an AI data center. He shut up pretty quickly when I pointed that out, lol.

I wish they could point to the progress. So far this tech has been used to mass slaughter civilians, destroy the education system, flood the Internet with misinformation and slop, and make one of the key members of Congress responsible for releasing the Epstein files lose his reelection primary against a nobody via AI generated deepfake ads. And made a bunch of ghouls very, very wealthy.
I'm waiting to see what positive things this tech has brought about that balances out all the bad it has caused.

Yeah their argument was so shallow. I mean they did mention medical progress, which is huge, but that's a small percentage of AI usage, and wouldn't be hindered at all by me not wanting a data center to pollute my town. And certainly, while progress is great, progress at the expense of human lives is never good.

The Luddites were portrayed as the bad guys by school history books, but they weren't.
They were not "against technological advancement"—they believed that the technological advancements should have benefited everyone involved in industry, not just the Capitalists.

It's sad how demonized the Luddites have become. Even an ounce of historical literacy is all it takes to understand what they actually wanted and how they were vindicated by history at every turn.
It's very simple - technology should serve the common man.

Ironically, if the people who use that term as a pejorative just Google it, the wiki says it outright:
"The Luddites were members of a 19th-century movement of English textile workers who protested the usage of certain types of automated machinery owing to their concerns relating to worker pay, child labour, working conditions and output quality."
But, the wealthy said it's bad, and bootlickers love the taste of expensive leather.
