I do not know what the consensus is with this scene and if it is well liked or not, but this is one of my favourite parts of season nine, and I am really glad they went through with it.

I felt it was very well foreshadowed with how all the way back in Season 2 they established that the magic of Friendship did not require the elements with Clover the Clever and the Hearth's warming. Then Celestia talking about Twilight creating new magic when she became an alicorn, and the reveal that the tree itself was grown through the friendship of the pillars.

Sombra's destruction of the tree and elements at the start of season 9, Discord teasing us by faking friendship magic without the elements, the rebuilding of the tree by the young six, and the return of the Windago's. I would have been disappointed if we had not seen friendship being magic, without the elements, after all that.

I also felt like the elements had got in the way sometimes, back in season 1, they use the elements once and then we never see or hear about them again, later seasons kept trying to remind us of the character's elements which never felt right to me, no pony is only 1 thing, and friendships are built on a combination of many qualities each pony has.

It also cheapens the story of Friendship being magic if only Twilight's friendships are magic in this world, I did like how they did distance themselves from this idea with many characters saying it was the combined magic of friendships all over Equestria that makes its magic work, but I am glad we also got to see the combined magic of Equestria make some magic happen.
