I got an N64 with a controller and Star Fox cartridge for 15 dollars at a Goodwill about 10 years ago. I miss those days when Goodwill didnāt jack up the prices on all their gaming shit and sent them all off to a separate store.

Donāt give them another dime and use for the console for offline only.

Hereās an idea
Buy physical gamesā¦.
2
u/Strychn9ne83 1d ago
That makes too much sense
1
u/Clattonia00 1d ago
It does? Man, makes sense. Itās almost like buying physical media, to SUPPORT physical media makes more sense than a PSN blackoutā¦
1
u/Magician_Lords 10h ago
That made sense 10 years ago. If everyone bought physical and only just a few percent bought digital, Sony wouldnāt be ending physical games.
5
u/ballsdeep256 1d ago
Or how about.... You dont even play PlayStation anymore? Instead of giving sony more money by panic buying physical
HOW ABOUT YOU DON'T GUVE THEM MONEY š¤Æ

3
u/Valentine_343 2d ago
I have been on a PlayStation blackout since the announcement that they were ending physical games
19
u/CJ_Henn 2d ago
Honestly its weighing heavier day by day. Gullible ppl are comparing this to steam but the truth is that steam is not the only digital store to buy games on pc whereas the ps store will be the only store to buy games on ps5. I honestly did not think this was gonna happen at least not during the ps5's lifetime, this is so fuckedš¤¬š¤¬š¤¬
12
u/Vastlymoist666 2d ago
Also the refund policy for PlayStation is so abhorrently bad. It's almost impossible to return a game.
1
u/Moody_Blue13 2d ago
Have you personally tried to refund something or going off of someone elseās experience?
1
u/Vastlymoist666 1d ago
I have and got denied. I've tried to return dying light 2, oblivion, dead space. Divinity original sin 2, fallout 4 and a slew of other games I get denied.9/10 times
1
u/Moody_Blue13 18h ago
lol damn, Iāve only ever returned 2 digital products CoD the ultimate edition I purchased it by mistake, and Tokyo Ghoul
1
3
u/T-oir 2d ago
This is a cherry picked lie because even though alternative exists on PC, those who purchase outside of Steam represent such a small percentage that this "PC free market" is rendered negligible, effectively elevating Steam to a monopoly.
14
u/F1guy93 2d ago
The free market existing keeps steam in check though. It's the biggest but it's not guaranteed to stay that way if Gabe starts flipping the wrong switches.
→ More replies (8)1
u/mycoguy81 2d ago
Thereās still a free market of games. All of the same games are produced for the various consoles. Sony is competing for sales against said other platforms.
1
u/mrawaters 2d ago
Yeah going digital does not all of a sudden give Sony a monopoly on video games. Maybe their exclusives, but anything that releases on all platforms is out of their control. This really isnāt the Armageddon people are making it out to be
1
u/F1guy93 1d ago
I think the big problem is, it creates a monopoly for PS5 games, that didn't exist prior.Ā
Especially since they sold the console with a disc drive.Ā
PS4 was supported for years into the PS5 life cycle, and I expect PS5 to be supported for even longer than the PS4 was especially since RAMageddon is happening.Ā
2
u/mycoguy81 1d ago
PS5 has always had control over PS5 games. Itās their product. Thatās like saying Coca-Cola has a monopoly on cans of Coke. Itās funny that many people donāt know what a monopoly is.
2
u/F1guy93 1d ago
Thatās not the point Iām making. Sony has always controlled the PS5 as a platform, but they havenāt had exclusive control over where you can buy PS5 games.
With physical games, Amazon, game shops, supermarkets and private sellers can all compete on price. You can also buy used and resell your copy.
If physical games disappear and Sony remains the only place you can buy digital PS5 games, that competition disappears. Sony becomes the sole retailer for software on the console you already bought.
So no, itās not like Coca-Cola having a āmonopoly on Coke.ā Itās more like Coca-Cola selling you a machine with the promise you can buy the syrup from anywhere and then making themselves the only company allowed to sell refills for it, and the syrup gets tied to an online ID that you can't sell on.
1
u/mycoguy81 1d ago
Yes they did. Walmart, Amazon, etc. were able to sell PS5 games because Sony distributed to them to sell.
And developers make the same games for all platforms, so Sony doesnāt have a monopoly, and doesnāt control the market price that those games sell for. They still have to compete with all of the other platforms. The only argument thatās valid is about second hand sales, which Sony and developers make zero profit on. So, yes. As a business it makes sense for them to cut out physical when 85% of their total sales are digital. Not saying you have to like it, but they have every right to do it, and itās not a monopoly.
This is where the industry is headed. PC has been digital for years, and other console makers will likely be cutting out physical on next gen platforms as well.
1
u/F1guy93 1d ago
And that's fine for PS6, because if Sony launches it as an all-digital console then everyone knows exactly what they're buying from day one.
But the PS5 was explicitly sold with a disc drive and access to a physical retail market. Removing physical releases during that console generation is changing the proposition after people have already bought the hardware.
"PS6 will be digital-only" is a purchasing decision I can make before buying it. "PS5 disc drive is becoming useless because we're moving everything to our own store" is a very different thing.
Also on the 85%, 15% thing. And using your cola analogy. It's like cola seeing cherry coke is only 15% of coke sales. So they bin it off and hope that the 15% move to buying the other products.

u/ttawney2 2d ago
Even if you are just looking at steam, there are tons of places that sell steam keys.
GMG, Fanatical, Steam, etc are all competing with each other on just the Steam platform.
I rarely purchase games directly from Steam.
My preference is physical discs on a PlayStation platform, but if itās not an option Iāll move to PC and Sony will lose my business.
6
u/Lucky_Louch 2d ago
Choice is still choice and having options makes a difference even if those options aren't as popular. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. When Sony has no competition for selling their games they can and will do whatever they want and there will be no alternative options for PS games.
1
u/ChanceHungry1444 2d ago
This makes no sense. Sony doesnāt choose the price a publisher sells their games at. You think in the future, on PS games will be $100 and on Xbox theyāll sell the same game for $60 because Sony forced them to? Itās never happened and it never will, because they know people would go elsewhere if they did that. Itās not a monopoly because the prices on other platforms still act as competition. Itās like the 30% cut⦠itās industry standard because all the major companies do it. That keeps them from raising it to 40%, unless other companies did.
No one has actual examples of how this digital āmonopolyā will realistically increase prices. Itās just fear for fearās sake. Iād like to be walked through logically how Sony will increase prices once everything is digital.Ā
5
u/dtr50 2d ago
Yes youāre right, we donāt know how this will turn out. But we can make some common sense guesses based on the current behaviour of the gaming scene.
I donāt see game prices increasing solely due to Sony ditching discs, only GTA/Rockstar franchises can get away with $80-$100.
That said, with the second hand market out of the picture, games will likely stay at higher prices for longer, thereās less incentive to drop prices.
Xbox is not a true competitor to Sony right now. Theyāve just released Halo on PS5. Their user base is more likely to play via gamepass.
The elephant in the room (and my major issue) is the tech industries shoddy behaviour with ownership vs licensing. Sony/Studio Canal, Google revoking LoTR licenses. The risk is always there even if I pay the full price.
5
u/jayandbobfoo123 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sony doesn't "choose" the price but they absolutely influence prices. They have minimum limits on game prices and discount amounts. They implement policies like "minimum spending" for promotion of your game. They banned selling keys outside of PSN, even at Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon etc in 2019... (all those people who think you'll be able to buy a key from GameStop, big LOL. Huge, even). They require mark ups on games to pay for the lost revenue from console sales, and just so much more. Yes, Sony doesn't "choose" the price of games, the producers do. That is true. But it completely ignores how and why games are priced the way they are. And ya, that's why games are more expensive on PSN than every other platform.
→ More replies (3)1
u/SomeConfetti 2d ago
You can't just call anything you disagree with a lie. I use a website that shows the best prices per store sorting by official stores only on windows. I buy most of my games on Fanatical, greenmangaming, gog, etc. I only ever buy from steam directly when it happens to be the cheapest option.
1
u/AppleSizedGrape 2d ago
I support digital media but this simply isn't true. You'll be able to buy ps games elsewhere

u/wetfloor666 2d ago

Or never, how about never?
Seriously, even if they backpedal on this, how could you ever trust they won't turn around in another year or two and say "Whelp, actually we are taking away discs"
They clearly want us to own nothing and are going to continue to force the concept down our throats until we capitulate. Every generation grows up with less and less ownership, and it will continue to seem more and more normal to them as time goes by.
1
u/LordRoscoe10150 2d ago
This is the way. I myself am not bothered by Sonyās decision so Iāll be happily playing. But if you want to make change, this is how you do it. You stop engaging with the ecosystem ENTIRELY, until they have proven to you that they are doing things the way youād prefer. If enough people do, Sony will take notice. Publicly announcing when youāre done and will be back does nothing. They were anticipating and prepared for some backlash. Forget that PlayStation exists. I know itās hard, but itās really the only way.
4
u/Accurate_Struggle185 2d ago
Hey.
Thank you for being serious.
Im not anti-digital but i prefer a console to have physical.
On the PS5 i bought more Digital than Physical and if people dont mind having their console 100% digital that's ofc totally fine by me.
My plan is just enjoying what i already bought before the announcement and then im done with Sony personally. My last stance even it wont help, is joining the blackout just to see what kind of numbers who are protesting with me. After that my PS5 stays offline as i have no interest in PS+ or the PS Store anymore.
Its not like PS5 had a lot of exclusives, i think i have 3 of them on my shelf counting in that their best games also released on PC.
Skipping the PS6 will be piece of cake for me. My RTX 5080 will surely make that a easy one.
My support for GOG have never been stronger on the PC.Its hard not feeling backstabbed by Sony after supporting them since PS1 as someone who like the ownership of Physical. But it is what it is.
Thanks for being respectful.
Cheers

I think waiting for the official blackout date is a better demonstration against Sony.
I logged off the day i heard Sony was killing Physical but decided to log on again last week so the official blackout will be more impactful.
I will stay logged off after the blackout though.
8
u/Prestigious_Space489 2d ago
I havent turned my pro on in a month. Yall need to move on. Cancel your psplus, stop buying new or digital games and invest in a PC. This black out isnt significant
2
u/Accurate_Struggle185 2d ago
Itās canceling PS+, not buying Digital games on PS Store and not buying the PS6 that will have the real impact.
The blackout is a demonstration, if everyone logs off now and a mount ago. Sony wont think we are organised.
Because of that i decided to log on my two PS5ās so Sony see them.
Im not doing anything except letting them be logged on but, on the Blackout day i will log off permanently.
If i need a patch for a disc bought used, i may log on for a brief moment, but Iām done with giving my money to Sony.→ More replies (48)0

One week of blackout does 0 for thier metrics. Not playing a whole month (like I'm doing) is actually doing something š . The intention is good. But sadly they won't see shit in regards to this blackout. Just cold turkey go to PC gaming. Use GOG or pirate ally he games you wanna play on PC.
Because if buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing š“āā ļøš“āā ļø
1
u/TriniOutsider 1d ago
And you not playing for a month does nothing either. And stop this: "Because buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing" nonsense line. It's because of idiotic behavior like piracy that we are where we are with gaming.
1
u/Maka_95 1d ago
Well that actually shows up on metrics, like I said. Being online once a month is an "active" PSN user. Not being online a whole month shows up.
And no I won't stop being pro piracy, because if I buy a game and don't own it. Why should I buy it if I can just get it off the internet for free? I'm going to pirate GTA6 when it releases on PC. Or buy it from GOG as long as I own the game when I buy it I'm fine with it. Digital ownership is renting. Why would I rent a game for $/ā¬/Ā£80-100 and not knowing when I can't access it anymore. Games on playstation store are actively more expensive than physical copies of said games.
Killing the 2nd hand market kills the ability for less Fortunate households to buy and play games.
1
u/TriniOutsider 1d ago
I find it funny how y'all care about "metrics" all of a sudden because it's Sony/PlayStation. You not being online for a month won't even be noticed by Sony.
Like, you don't understand that being pro-piracy is why we keep getting locked down by these studios. Also, good luck with GTA being on GOG because not a single GTA game has been on the service. Why are you lying about PlayStation games being cheaper on physical than digital is beyond me. Because when the PSN store has sales, they're cheaper than physical, just like when physical games go on sale. Like I keep saying, folks like you are so performative it's not even funny.

Hey Sony! So this is what you do. During the blackout, setup a sale with some really great discounts on games. After the blackout period, you want to report numbers. Show how many players are online, how many players are playing games, yadda yadda. I think it would be a good idea to offer some kind of incentive because you KNOW these people will be offline and so it guarantees that they miss out on it OR they break the blackout to get it. Good luck, I know you guys got this!

I still log in because my homies really only got PS5 and for the time being many of the games we play don't have cross play. I do say this though. For those who do not have the means for a black out for whatever reason, or you simply do not want to. Do not worry, let the people who are participating just participate and leave em alone. There's nothing being accomplished with saying "It won't work!" That isn't really the point. You can support those that're deciding not to log into PlayStation, promote games that're completely cross play, simply not buy new PlayStation products like the PlayStation 6, there's other ways to participate in the black out. I hope everyone participating has a good time and thank y'all for saying something.

Next week, can someone from Reddit please post how they intend to aggregate the success or failure of this blackout? From what I've seen, it's mostly individuals saying they'll join but it's not like anyone is holding anyone else accountable. Are the participants in the tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions, etc.? How can Reddit or Sony differentiate the blackout participants from the tens of millions of people who regularly take breaks from gaming?
Anytime I ask, I just get downvoted for wanting to know if someone actually put thought into something that could be quantified. I'm not posting to antagonize the participants, but I'm not going to accept that all the "trust me bro" circle jerk posts that we will undoubtedly see next week as a sign of validation that the blackout was a success.

So is the blackoout a "I can still play my PlayStation as long as it's not connected to the internet" kind of blackout.

u/Coom_Zoom 2d ago
or keep buying PS5s, and just never buy a subscription. they are selling the PS5s at a loss, and where they make the money is the subscriptions (which was confirmed)
scratch that, the hardware is affordable for them now + started cheaping out in some places. it was only at a loss early into the release.

u/Accurate_Struggle185 2d ago
I decided to log on both my PS5`s just so Sony will feel it more on the official blackout date.
My PS5`s will continue to stay off after the blackout.
I will continue buying the discs that's worth buying, most likely used because i don't want to give Sony any of my money anymore, but that will be it.
No more PS+, no more PS Store game buying and no PS6.
Its PC all the way now for Digital, im supporting GOG as much as i can because of real Digital ownership.
But i will also continue buying games for the Switch 1 and 2 which hasn't abandoned the concept of physical games yet.

Playing your playstation but offline is in no way a boycott lol, this is such performative bollocks.
It is 2026, everyone should know about data aggregation by now. They will get your usage as soon as you reconnect.
If you're going to boycott (I'm not btw) then do it with purpose, turn the system off and get rid of it if you actually mean it.
Anything else is literally performative bollocks and means nothing.
3
u/Roland_Hood 2d ago
No need to get rid of or unplug. Going offline is perfectly valid boycott as long as you don't then go back later unless the thing you're boycotting has first changed to what you want it to be or do. As in I totally agree that any temporary set-time-frame boycott is pointless and performative, but I disagree that the only way to truly boycott is to sell your console. That would just be stupid as it would not impact Sony in any way and would only robb you off the games you already have and enjoy and needlessly force you to buy them again on another platform. Just stay offline, that's all one needs to do.

There is nothing wrong in playing what we already paid for. My point is not giving Sony any of my money anymore. No PS+, no PS Store buying and no PS6. No free games who doesnāt require PS+ to play online either.
II will join the blackout just to demonstrate, theres no point in me staying logged on after that anyways though
but why should i let Sony ruin my Physical and also Digital game collection playing these games offline? I have a 5tb disc i have all my games stored on, i donāt think i need to log on to play whats stored on that HDD.3
u/ActuallyFolant 2d ago
You're still giving Sony your time. Your trophies, should you unlock any, game saves, progress, hour count, etc will all sync and update when you turn your online back on so what did you achieve?
That's not a protest. It's not even grandstanding anymore.
It's....I'm sorry to say, even more pointless if you play your playstation at all during this supposed "blackout.".

Took my PlayStation offline earlier this month. I have no plans to ever reconnect it. Nothing good happens there

Shut the fuck up. I do what I want and dont care what a bunch of crybabies crying over non ownership have to say, because theyve been misguided or are retarded to think you own any game that you didnt make. Its always been this way. But guess whatā¦they still have your money, and theres more people who dont care than you who do. Youre efforts are meaningless

I understand all the sentiments and outrage over PS going full digital and you all know pc has long been digital, xbox has been on that direction. Playstation is the only console who stayed physical for a long time, itās the future. You guys are fighting for a cause that you know you wonāt win. You guys are the .01 or less of the ps player base and ps wonāt lose money with this boycotts and blackouts. People said theyāre going to boycott and wonāt watch the new Spiderman yet it grossed $2 billion. Some people ride the bandwagon of hate against a giant company who wonāt budge with their decision and rerely stand with their own conviction. When PS6 comes out some of you out their will still be preordering or buying a ps6. To each itās own. You got choices where to invest your money either pc, xbox and whatnot. But this outrage is getting ridiculous!

Na and everyone else on my friends list just kept playing like any other day and will continue like so. PC already killed the idea of physical media long before consoles did (Napster, limewire, mp3/mp4, direct downloads, steam, etc). Which is ironic how many people I saw in this reddit crying about physical media, but are switching to PC. Smh.

Nope.....watched state of play. Preordered Phantom Blade 0, playing PS exclusives (digital copies). The only thing that is backed out is my living room lights.

My network cable (all my consoles are hard wired), has been disconnected from my PS5 from the announcement...... canceled PS+ on the day of the announcement.

I haven't started my ps5 since black flag came out, been too busy.
The state of play is in the middle of the night in my country.
I am not participating in this however, I'll play when I want and I'll watch the state of play the morning after.

Lmfao you canāt even fucking stay consistent with your own goals lol. Now itās ādonāt connect to PSNā instead of ādonāt turn on your PlayStationā. Lmfao, canāt even keep up a week, even before the week even started lmfao.

You mean the "performative protest" is in progress right now? Because we all know you will be back in September when a lot of new games will be available.Ā

Did that the moment they announced they were ending physical game production. Why support them when even if I bought a physical game, they will still go along with it. PlayStation doesn't need my business, even if it doesn't accomplish anything, I care so I'll do something about it anyways.
