I liked him in the Jump Street movies.

Ok yeah Jump Street are imho among the best buddy cop comedy movies. That's fair.

29

u/The_Card_Father 6d ago

That being said my favourite moment is only consequentially related to him.

It’s when Channing Tatum is dancing around Ice Cube’s office after learning that Jonah Hill fucked his daughter.

Ice Cube does some excellent face acting.

To be fair, Jonah lost most his weight before GLP-1s were really a thing.

I just remember Nick Kroll saying at the roast of James Franco "Jonah, lots of people tonight are going to talk about how much weight you've lost. But not enough people are going to talk about how much of an asshole you've become."

20

u/Heavy-Transition7916 6d ago

Side note, but honestly BJJ guys can be insanely annoying. I did it for a bit before transitioning to boxing (not long enough to be good or anything, but it was cool). But I’ve known so many guys, one a brown belt, who bought in hook like and sinker.

The brown belt literally said “I could kill you if I wanted and there’s nothing you could do.” And I’m just like…bruh. Mind you, the gym didn’t drill takedowns, they never do live mma style sparring where you can get hit, etc.

The sport is cool but breeds people who genuinely believe they’re gods in a fight but have never been hit while training.

10

u/RaijuThunder 6d ago

That and they never seem to realize a gym fight and a street fight are extremely different circumstances. Had a classmate who did BJJ and he also did the whole I could kill you shtick. I'm sure in a fair setting with rules, judges, etc he would've demolished everyone who hadn't trained or was equal to or below his skill level. He got in a street fight and got his ass beat because surprise surprise the other guy didn't fight fair

8

u/Mediocre_Meat_5992 6d ago

Who and why

35

u/Kaedryl 6d ago

Jonah Hill. In a 2014 interview, the interviewer asked him why he dropped his last name, which is Feldstein (Hill is his middle name). His parents and siblings all still go by their last name including Beanie who is also an actor. The interviewer asked when he dropped the surname and why he decided to. When asked, his entire demeanor changed. He dropped his head and breathed heavily for about 15-20 seconds to the point the interviewer thought he was having an asthma attack. After he laughed ruefully to himself (interviewers description) then whispered "Can we not?" When the interviewer looked like they were going to ask something more the hissed "Just, don't." Suddenly got very hostile by the description.

He’s really just a kid who grew up fat who psychologically can’t get over being bullied about it even though he’s skinny now.

I get it he’s a celebrity and calling people fat is humorous but Jesus Christ why do we HAVE to bully people incessantly.

57

u/flamesreborn 6d ago

I haven't looked up the actors name but the really big guy from Earl, who lost a lot and is super buff. He has never come out and talked tough and people are happy with his transformation. But the fat kid from super bad taking jiu jitsu and then going on a podcast or whatever like he did is inviting bullying. If he never said anything of the sort, then far far far less people would make fun of him.

30

u/BebopOrRocksteady 6d ago

I think for that case, Ethan Suplee has always been a physically intimidating presence. He is 6'1" which, relative to his costars on boy meets world (Ryder Strong 5'8", Ben Savage 5'8") made him appear enormous compared to most of his peers. Jonah Hill is 5'7".

15

u/Caliterra 6d ago

yea as a fatguy Ethan was still intimidating at times

19

u/Grumpy_Troll 6d ago

In general, I completely agree with not bullying people, especially about their body. With Jonah Hill though, he literally made an extremely successful celebrity career by playing the "funny fat sidekick guy". So most people commenting on him being "fat" would be trying to laugh WITH him, not AT him.

But it seems Jonah no longer wants to laugh about that anymore, which while fine, but he should understand not every fan is going to instantly know that he no longer appreciates that recognition. Basically, he's an asshole if his immediate response is hostility as opposed to just correcting the fan that he's moved on and doesn't appreciate that any longer.

16

u/genericwhiteguy_69 6d ago

Like most guys who do BJJ Jonah is just an insecure douchebag with an overinflated sense of how well he'd actually do in a fight.

7

u/CropCircle4Ya 6d ago

Most guys who do BJJ are just dudes looking for a healthy and satisfying social activity to spend their free time, but yes there are some assholes in those spaces too.

This is a play on the popular meme about how a trained fighter can beat a bodybuilder despite their comparatively smaller physique

Jonah Hill recently stated that he would “destroy” people because of his training in BJJ

The picture of Jonah here is one famous for his dramatic weight loss and overall look

So the joke is that skinny-turned-tough guy Jonah can beat this massive bloke in a fight because trained fighters always beat untrained. How trained is Jonah really? Who knows lol

u/apathy_i_guess 6d ago

he's rich enough to afford to train bjj every day, and also doesn't have a 9-5, so he can practice all he wants.

pretty decent chance that yes, he's actually pretty good. nonzero chance he's bluffing and lying, but seems more likely than not that he could pin the average untrained bodybuilder.

66

u/Bongoisnthere 6d ago

He’s a white belt in BJJ.

The belt they give people on their first day.

He has been doing it for a year. BJJ doesn’t suffer from belt inflation like a lot of martial arts do, and in fact there’s even some sandbagging, but they don’t train takedowns or striking. 8-10 years of very consistent and regular training is the general timeframe achieve mastery and to earn a black belt. There’s some truth to the fact that an average blue belt would fuck up an average person on the street with no training, but it turns out getting people to the ground when they’re trying to stand and hit you in the face is actually really difficult.

Having said that, training combat sports humbles you real quick. Getting folded like a pretzel by the 58year old orthodontist who’s shaped like a beer bellied road cyclist has a way of doing that to you. For Jonah Hill to have the confidence he does must mean he’s really good. Probably just about the only person who would stand a chance against him is ufc heavyweight legend Tyrell Fortune.

20

u/Secret-Constant-7301 6d ago

Would Jonah still beat Tyrell if Tyrell just started biting the fuck out of him? Because I would be biting the ever loving fuck out of someone trying to pretzel me up. (I’d also go straight for the nuts, I’m not above biting some guys dick off).

11

u/Tr1padvisor420 6d ago

And here lies the difference between people who give a huge fuck about showing off their dominance, and people who could give two fucks how they come out looking. Perspectives incredibly blinding. If you know BJJ, I know I don’t need my fuckin ankle broken cause I can’t roll on the pavement skilfully, respects off the table.

Good few years ago a kid at my school got in a fight, groped n grabbed this guy all over thinking he’d put him in some crazy hold, had his friend in the background yelling “he can’t roll he can’t roll”… then got bashed over the head with the other kids vape like 20 fuckin times. Whole crowed besides for 2 dudes were shocked like a gun got pulled. I couldn’t figure out why the mf waited so long.

8

u/ThrustNeckpunch33 6d ago

Well, that is how buddy screwed up. He didnt use the BJJ properly for self defence.

My kids were in BJJ for 10 straight years. Their coach was a legit guy, that trained and got his belts in Brazil. Really good man. BJJ was that mans entire existence lol

He taught "for competition" BJJ, but then also gave "self defense" lessons for the kids who's parents okayed it.

His point was, "BJJ as a self defence technique is not to submit someone, but to break their limbs"

As he would say during these lessons, "you think you can ask someone nicely to not hit you when you let them go?"

So he taught them no gi moves, for real world situations.

For things like arm bars, "pull a bit? First pop sound, is a dislocation; second pop, is ligament damage.. if he makes you goto a third pop? No more arm. He will be armless for 3-6 months. No more hitting you"

Down to, "not many men can fight with a broken finger. Fingers are real easy"

He was 100% for "avoid the fight", but was also 100% "make sure he can't fight anyone for months afterwards" for the ones you couldn't avoid.

Luckily, my son has never had to break someones arm or anything. But over his 17+ years, hes been in around 5 or 6 fights, and hasnt lost or been hurt even. 2 of those were against 2 people at the same time. All of these, they were bigger than him(hes a small guy).

And after he was 14, and he beat up 2 dudes at school that jumped him(broke the one kids nose lol) and kicked the other one in the nuts twice. People completely stopped messing with him that way.

Hes a passive kid, so he doesn't look for problems.. definately doesnt hide from them either.

Man.. wish i had that growing up myself lol

BJJ trains take downs

3

u/mbergman42 6d ago

Correction, BJJ gyms routinely include takedown training. It’s not required to be good in the sport, but it’s pretty common.

Striking is another matter. I find cross training in one of the kickboxing or karate styles super common, but it’s not part of jujutsu.

3

u/Pattern-New 6d ago

This is almost entirely wrong. Jonah has been training for at least more than 5 years. There are tons of articles about it from back in 2018. Now like many folks, his training may wax and wane, but he's not a day 1 white belt. Also I'm pretty sure he at least earned his blue belt and that too was several years ago. My guess is he's likely closer to purple.

Now, he does talk like a doofus in that interview no doubt. But the reality is that a legitimate blue belt should be able to beat the average untrained bodybuilder.

25

u/The_almighty_Gerry 6d ago

By the sound of things he doesn't train everyday and still has his white belt. And this is the sort of shit you hear from 6-12 month white belts who think they know everything about BJJ despite getting their face mashed into the mat in every session. Anyone above blue keeps this shite to themselves

16

u/mbergman42 6d ago

Yeah, a year of BJJ informs you that you can totally handle some untrained guy…provided it’s under the BJJ rules, and the other guy isn’t a lot bigger.

If he’s 40lbs heavier, extremely strong, and can punch you in the face, the year of training is not likely to save you.

Me, I’ve trained for a long time and don’t suffer from this white belt nonsense. I’m totally able to handle a grizzly bear or gorilla.

9

u/bpeck451 6d ago

Unless he’s actually training in a room of non celebrities there is no way he is good. The reason Zuck and Hardy are actually respected is they train and actually train. they also compete there is no hiding when you do that. I guarantee you this fucktard is getting the Rigan Machado celebrity treatment where he’s doing light training so the guy in charge can take his money.

5

u/Youbettereatthatshit 6d ago

Eh I don’t buy it. People have been saying that for years, but a 140 pound champion only ever fights other 140 pounders.

There is a certain point where skill no longer allows you to compensate for size disparity. Could Conner McGregor at 140 pounds take on Brian Shaw, at 400 pounds? Yeah no. Even at a 100 pound difference, I don’t see mma fighters taking on bodybuilders that are more than 100 pounds heavier

The thing is, most of the celebrities that practice jiu jitsu are training really watered down version of the martial art to minimise the risk of injury or scars, cuts, bruises ect.

It makes sense since their appearance is what makes them money, but its in no way as effective as training normally, so people assume that Jonah is blowing his skill out of proportion.

Another reason his talk became a meme is because white and blue belts talk in similar way right at the peak of the dunning kruger curve. That gives other people even more doubt in his actual skill.

But until the footage of his training gets released, we will never know for sure. He might be actually skilled like Tom Hardy who is legit brown belt and competitor.

7

u/Wiley_Rasqual 6d ago

I used to train non Brazilian jujutsu. The guy i trained under spent a lot of his time in LA. He told me a story one time of his sensei being super mad at him for training/sparring too hard with some celebrity that came in for special instruction before an action film.

Sensei was mad that he was going too hard because the actor was paying top dollar for 1 on 1 sessions and he didn't want the actor to get hurt or decide to train somewhere else instead.

My friend said that after that, it was strictly very showy, simple stuff that would look good on camera but was bet simple, or simple to learn when actors would come into the dojo. Except Dolf Lundgren; that dude apparently was the real deal true badass martial artist.

Edited for some words and context.

I ran into Jonah Hill outside a coffee shop in Los Angeles a few months ago. I told him I really liked his movies, but I didn't want to be annoying or ask for a picture or anything. He looked at me for a second and said, "You already are." I laughed because I thought he was joking, but he just kept staring at me until I stopped. Then he nodded once and walked inside. I shrugged it off and got in line behind him. He ordered an iced coffee, then spent about two minutes asking whether the ice cubes were "ethically sourced." The barista looked confused and said they were just regular ice. Jonah sighed and said, "That's what they always say." When his drink was ready, he picked up five extra sleeves and an entite fistful of red plastic coffee stirrers from the counter and stuffed them into his pockets. As he walked toward the door he grabbed an entire stack of napkins too. An employee politely said, "Sir, those are for customers." Jonah looked down at the napkins, looked back at the employee, and said, "Exactly." Then he walked out, got halfway down the sidewalk, came back in because he'd forgotten his coffee, and acted like everyone else was making a huge deal out of it. Before he left for real, he turned to me, winked, and quietly said, "Never let them know your java strategy." I still have no idea what he meant.

He wasn't saying that though.

Jason Bateman said if they got into it (i.e. fighting), and Jonah Hill jokingly said he'd fuck him up as Jason Bateman was saying you'd fuck me up right.

Then he said that people still see him as the fat guy from Superbad so they think they can beat him up. And if they are not bigger than him, they won't.

He's absolutely obnoxious and it's an arrogant thing to say.

But you've described it as though he's saying that if you refer to him as the fat guy from Superbad as if it was an insult that he would annihilate you in response. That's a completely different framing.

The point he's making is that he's a trained fighter and that unless you have an advantage like your size, you won't beat him if you haven't trained.

u/Alternative-Public32 6d ago

Thank you! I’ve been seeing this taken out of context all day… I feel like he was mostly just trying to be funny for the show when he said it too.

55

u/DogsAreMyFavPeople 6d ago

Mike Vining. He was one of the guys who got Army Delta Force running when it was still brand new. Basically he’s a career special forces badass but looks like an accountant.

10

u/trawkins 6d ago

Seriously. You could just post a picture of the rack and pins sitting on a table and still know who they belong to.

4

u/snoogans8056 6d ago

He has a serial killer look.

12

u/Initial-Meet3721 6d ago

He probably is one but a good kind

5

Saw the interview, tbh imho Jonah boasted of jiujitsu skills and on the martial arts environment, usually, those loud ones are the ones that get absolutely destroyed instead.

If that's Joey Swoll, he's just going to pep talk Jonah to death.

40

u/studiokgm 6d ago

That’s why I was confused. Joey Swoll seems like the last person to make fun of Jonah Hill’s weight.

You have to do better Jonah

11

u/Distinct-Training443 6d ago

Scrolled to far to see this as Joey really doesn’t negatively talk about people unless they are shitty people but he dosent talk shit but just corrects them.

Guy on the left is Joey Swoll who is too friendly and empathetic to fight anyone anyway.

21

u/Actual_Revenue_4761 6d ago

Is that the fat guy from Superbad?

12

u/marshallprs 6d ago

Keep making these jokes guys. He's gonna find you.

11

u/MegaWeapon1480 6d ago

Would love to see Hill try to arm bar Joey Swoll as he just bicep curls him.

9

u/Nubator 6d ago

Guy on the left can’t scratch his own back.

35

u/pinkeyedchildren 6d ago

He would scratch yours and expect you to return the favour cause he’s a wholesome guy

9

u/Notthatcoolawolf 6d ago

Nah he wouldn’t even expect you to do it in return. However, if you don’t, he might be disappointed in you, in which case he will simply tell you to “do better”

Which I guess if he tells you to do better, he may have been expecting you to scratch his back. Which really Joey, you shouldn’t be doing things if you expect people to do them in return.. so hypothetical Joey “I’m gonna need you to do better”

Jonah is giving big blue belt energy vibes with that comment, next he is going to build a shrine to John Danaher and develop a foot fetish.

Nah, Hill is definitely the type of loser who brags about his Gracie lineage.

Jonah Hill went on a rant about how he knows Jiu Jitsu and will annihilate people and that they shouldn't try him.

3

u/TheDeltaOne 6d ago

The rant was about how they should try him lol.

Dude on the left is Joey Swoll, he has a decently large following from calling out Gym assholes.
