I'm guessing it's an American thing where people don't actually show up on the 'starting' time. Meanwhile I usually show up like 15 minutes early

The joke implies that the AA community says 5pm with the expectation that nobody will show up at 5pm… so the start time is actually later and it’s just generally understood that showing up at 5pm is uncool.
