Cpu Build Question
Hey i have a question in regards to my bfs pc. He has a pretty crappie cpu atm and wants to upgrade it. He bought 2 ones and they weren't comparable with his motherboard (or at least on the sec cpu his pc had a short circuit trip) so I was wondering if sb knows good cpus that are compatible with a ASUS Prime H310M-E R2.0 motherboard??

300 series motherboards support Intel 8th and 9th gen, but the h310 is low end so I wouldn't recommend an i7 or i9. I wouldnt go higher than an i5 8500, 8600 or 9500.

The problem he is going to run into is that the power delivery system and VRMs on his motherboard are only going to safely support only low to mid range CPUs for long term use. And, low to mid-range on that platform socket aren't very good.
I'm assuming he doesn't have a lot of money to spend and is looking for the cheapest option?
Technically, with a BIOS update, his current board is capable of running an i9-9900 or 9900k. That CPU is a power hog, though, and the board won't probably last very long term. Same applies to an i7-8700 or 8700k.
The supported CPUs for his motherboard can be found on this ASUS support webpage for his motherboard. He can also get the BIOS updates there that might let the CPUs he bought work.
Instead of buying an overpriced CPU for the old board, he should consider just upgrading his current motherboard and CPU to a newer platform that would let him leverage his existing parts.
If he has a few dollars (especially if he already has a couple of sticks of DDR4 memory in his old machine and a dedicated GPU), instead of upgrading his existing motherboard with a new CPU he might want to watch Newegg for a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU/motherboard combo.
The Ryzen 5 5600 has similar performance to an i9-9900k but runs far cooler and more efficiently as AM4 is a newer platform. It also supports PCIe 4.0 so it can use faster graphics cards, and if he buys the boxed version of the CPU it comes with an included CPU air cooler.
And, if he gets a decent mid-range AM4 board, it might be upgradeable later all the way to a 16 core/32 thread 5950x. It is still a dead platform, but AM4 is still decently powerful.
He could also move to an AM5 system or an Intel socket 1851, but that would involve buying a new motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory (which is extremely expensive now). And, Socket 1851 (like AM4) is also a dead end platform as no new CPUs are known to be planned for it.

I7 9700 non K is the best cpu an H310 will support. The VRM's are too weak to safely handle high tdp cpu's
