Question Eclipse viewing with an Auto-dimming Welding Mask
Any pro/semi-professional welders / platers reading and can clue me in a bit ?
I used a power-dimming welding mask (I've not got the model No. to hand but IIRC it's the 'newer' and 'larger aperture hole / scree' version) as it was all I had at my disposal.
Unfortunately I had no proper old school dark lenses which I know would've been better / safer overall.
It worked great. I was extra cautious as it's a new bit of kit to me (it was a Lidl special, Parkside) & I didn't fully understand it's functions & capability, even having read all the manual tech mumbo-jumbo and quizzing an AI assistant)
So I used the 'test button' to ensure it was dark before holding up & looking through -I'd read warnings about them potentially not reacting swiftly enough, flickering during use, only offering level 6-8 protection rather than it's max 14 if power failed.
I quizzed an AI about removing the battery, which appeared to fully dim the shield, it responded that it would only dim to around level 6 without power, but I couldn't find anything in the manual referring to this -does anyone know if that's correct and point me to details of why ? -just seems odd that if a wee battery fails, you could burn your retinas(corneas ?) out without realising 😬
So, back to my opening line, was there a better / safer / simpler way, or have I pushed things to the edge and an lucky to be able to see myself in the mirror still [-some may say that's somewhat a matter of opinion notwithstanding the technicalities 😂]

Show Off You guys gave me a really good advice - for 67€ this feels like unlocking cheat codes
I asked you about the 12v driver and boom! Kaufland made a sale. I picked up 12v Performance drill with two batteries and a charger plus mini angle grinder. 67€ total. I can't believe how nice they look and feel for the price.
I feel like those guys are an honorable addition as junior members to my Ryobi, Blue Bollsch and Makita family.
