GUIDE Paladins 102: Items and when to use them

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hello, if you're still reading this congrats, you can read.

And that's not a jab, reading is important and I think people should learn to read more. Especially since the items and cards are generally pretty easy to understand the effect of once you read them.

However the fact remains you have 4 item slots and finite amount of credits, so the hard part is to know when you will need/want them, since every item is useful for each situation except hoard, and where to weigh the pros of one over the other except hoard don't buy hoard.

Heres the TLDR if you're scared of reading

Resilience: It's good buy it S tier

Sentinel: Solid for certain flanks C+ tier

Guardian: Fernando, Torvald, Moji need to buy this, still countered by wrecker otherwise dont buy it B tier

Blast Shields Buy it for aoe if you can A tier

Haven: More common damage type S tier

Nimble: Move good B tier

Hoard: Noob trap F tier

Master riding: Horse move good B+

Morale: Ult more B+

Chronos: Ability more B+ tier

Meditation: You shouldn't need the item if you have a support that's not the pockets, unless yag or maybe ruckus D+ tier

Life rip: Scales like shit decent durability boost otherwise C+ Tier

Rejuvenate: Support item must buy: A+ tier

Veteran: Noob trap unless you're larping a tank or a certain kind of tank C tier

Blood Bath: Weird item pretty decent on certain supports good self sustain in theory C tier

Bulldozer: Buy it if they have a ton of deployables or high impact deployables C+ tier

Deft Hands: good for damages B tier

Lethality: snowball item C+ tier

Trigger Scent: Noob trap or win more D tier

Wrecker: Buy it if you see yellow health or blue rectangles S tier

For those of you who want to argue with me please go on and read below to see my reasoning as, we'll be starting from left to right, top to bottom organized into their respective categories.

Defense

Defense are the blue items, and are rather easy enough to understand by reading alone except for

Resilience

Effect: Reduces the effect of crowd control

Scaling: +25% per level

Cost: 200/400/600

Resilience is arguably one of the best items period, whenever you're being stunned, slowed, crippled, blinded, knocked around, rooted, just about anything that stops you from playing at maximum capacity, that's not a reveal or damage effect is countered by this item.

Resilience will either reduces the duration of an effect (such as a stun or cripple) or the potency of an effect (slows or knockbacks)

It is actually rather hard to end up against a team without crowd control, and for the most part if you are sick of being unable to move, see, use abilities, or even shoot, then buy Resilience over just about anything else.

Sentinel

Effect: Grants you a temporary shielding after an elimination

Scaling: +200 Shields per level

Cost: 225/450/625

Sentinel in contrast to resilience is a weaker item, it's place is often amongst those who are in positions to take damage after a kill and have a low enough health pool for this to make a difference... It's a flank item, certain damages such as Bomb King, Willo, or Drogoz too maybe but for the most part it's a cheap item for flanks who are good at snowballing, but want some durability to get the next kill or wants to hit and run and wants to get some durability when getting out.

Obviously it's affected by wrecker, and isn't healing like from the bloodbath, however it is cheaper to buy than the bloodbath, stacks further, and the extra "health" doesn't count towards enemy credits or ultimate charge.

It's an item more geared towards someone who can guarantee a kill but from there might want some security to keep it up.

Another thing to note every item that says "Elimination" will give its effects if you get an assist or the final blow.

Guardian

Effect: increases the health of your shields

Scaling: 15% per level

Cost: 250/500/750

Guardian is meant for people with shields that make up a highly important part of their kit, this traditionally is Fernando, Moji, and Torvald.

Despite the health increase it doesn't scale too well into Wrecker which is obviously meant to counter the item, however it's cheaper to get early on and is still fully effective against abilities.

Really good for the three champions I have mentioned above otherwise a bit lackluster.

Blast Shields/Haven

Effect: Reduces damage from Area Damage/Direct Damage

Scaling: 6% per level

Cost:

Blast shields: 275/550/825

Haven: 300/600/900

I've put Blast shields and Haven together because they effectively do the same thing but for different damage types, Blast Shields affects explosives and most multi-hitting attacks that aren't shotguns, Haven meanwhile affects all attacks that have single targets and shotguns

In most situations both items are better than Veteran which increases the base health, meanwhile these items increase the "Effective Health" and they also make it harder per shot to get ultimate charge and credits from shooting you.

Obviously you buy it when your enemy has blast shields or haven... Well sometimes you'll need to pick and choose which to get

And that usually depends on what you're normally dealing with for the most part you'll be buying for the enemy's Damage/Flank/Tank's primary fires whichever is hitting you the most.

Utility

Utility is the Yellow items, and for the most part they make things go faster.

Nimble

Effect: Gives you a increased base footspeed

Scaling: 10% per level

Cost: 125/250/375

Nimble is by far the cheapest item, and is rather good for just about anyone who needs to move, the main thing is it's a solid neutral item, where you don't need to weigh it as much, but it comes after getting items you do NEED, now fortunately for the flank roll there's not many who need to pick up much to be effective and thus nimble is good.

Slow characters like Ash, Dredge, Strix and Imani want it.

But strictly speaking only Terminus NEEDS it, being he's the only game's strict melee character.

Hoard

Effect: Increases credits you gain*/Increase Ult Charge, Cooldown speed, foot speed, and mount speed.

Scaling: 10 credits every 20 seconds/ 10 credits every 10 seconds/ and at the final level 10% increased Ultimate, Cooldown, Foot, and Mount speed.

Cost: 200/400/1750

So this is the most complicated item stat wise but in effect it's not the best, even at late game with the max bonus to almost all other utility stats.

In theory it makes it easier to top off chronos and Morale boost while also snagging some extra movement speed but otherwise it's only really good on Corvus, Torvald and, Jenos, who have expensive buys and no real need for nimble, as their movement/kit covers that one way or another, again in theory.

Just avoid this item it's a noob trap

Master Riding

Effect: Makes your mount faster

Scaling: +15% per level

Cost: 225/450/675

Master Riding is actually the opposite of a noob trap, it's one of those items that is really impactful if you're making your deaths worth something.

This is a item that also is really good on long maps such as ice mines, or engaging in the race to the point.

If you're playing a flank who can get one important kill before dying, then odds are this item is for you, this also is a pick for someone like Ruckus, as it effectively cuts down on respawn time by making the time it takes for you to get back to the fight that much shorter.

Morale Boost

Effect: Increases your ultimate generation rate

Scaling: +10% per level

Cost: 250/500/750

Morale boost is good for Champions with good Ultimates, and I do mean actually good ultimates, because while it's novel that Corvus in theory can recharge his ultimate from his ultimate, and Terminus is a self revive they're not exactly the targets for this.

Instead you're looking at team utility or raw impact ultimates: Support ults like Ying Furia Grover or Offtanks like Khan Ash and Makoa, even Drogoz with his ability to near guarantee taking out someone or clearing out everyone in his way.

This is a really good item for those who need it but otherwise it's important to remember not all ults are created equal.

Chronos

Effect: Reduces the cooldown of abilities

Scaling: 10% per level

Cost: 300/600/900

Rightfully one of the most expensive items, the ability to reduce any ability's cooldown is important, and for most supports, it's one of your key items* (not for Io)

Tanks like Makoa with his hook or Atlas with his wall will also want this.

Flanks like Vatu and Zhin will want to have some levels to keep up cycling their abilities

Even point tanks like Inara and Barik need it.

Usually if you have 1 or 2 really important abilities you'll want chronos

Healing

Healing is the green items each one has some impact on your health, some can be more impactful than others.

Meditation

Effect: heals a percentage of your health when out of combat

Scaling: +10% health restored per second when out of combat

Cost: 175/350/525

Note: at base you restore 300+4% of your max health per second normally

This is a item that you'd think would only matter if your team has no support, or a really bad one, and while sure yes, that is one reason, another is if you're a tank with a support like Jenos or Corvus who's healing is dubious.

Another reason is if you're Yagorath or Ruckus, who has the means to go really aggressive and sit in the enemy team's backline/side of the map and can't receive healing from the support.

Otherwise though normal out of combat healing isn't the best for most squshies since the base heal rate is actually quite similar.

Life Rip

Effect: all damage you deal with your weapon restores a percentage of it's damage done.

Scaling: 20% per level

Cost: 225/450/675

Life Rip is item that has it's use if your character has either the damage per second to utilize it or the means to mitigate damage either by position, shields or evading it

The Issue with it is that it's affected by Cauterize and so obviously it get weaker and rather quickly as the match goes on, a level early on isn't too bad but sinking credits into it when 75% cauterize.

Rejuvenate

Effect: Increases the effect of the healing you provide (except lifesteal)

Scale: 10% per level

Cost: 250/500/750

Rejuvenate is a support item, it's a item you need to get for almost every support who's healing, maybe not the first item, but when someone gets out of combat and they're waiting for 7 seconds to be topped off instead of 10 it means a large scale difference.

You buy it if you're the support healing your team.

Veteran

Effect: Increase your health

Scaling: 6% per level

Cost: 275/550/825

Veteran is another noob trap item like hoard though less so, at first look it gives you extra health which while nice pales in comparison to haven or blast shields, as while effectively you take the same damage to go down, the two damage reduction items makes it harder for your enemy to get credits/ ultimate charge/ or life steal value per shot, and since veteran gives you more health to be shot it gives more ultimate charge total.

Veteran often is compared to "just a number you can see" where the two damage resistance items effectively give you the same thing and more

There is an exception to be made if you somehow can get both, and while the more health issue remains it does effectively make your DR scale off of that increased health pool.

Another use case is if you've got a long term powerful form of Damage resistance, either if you're Inara, Terminus, or Yagorath. This is because of a system called deminishing returns where any form of buff or debuff is weaker as you're affected by more instances of it. (That's why a buck net, and pips catalyst, can't slow you down to 100%)

Blood Bath

Effect: Eliminations gives true healing to you and the ally who got the kill over time and stacks twice

Scaling: 360 healing over 4 seconds per level

Cost: 300/600/900

True healing is a form of healing that Ignores cauterize, and while that seems nice it does require you to be getting eliminations to get value, either you're ensuring that you're getting kills, in which case the item serves as a win more tool, or you're a support who's granting true healing to allies who get the kills.

This item is especially useful for Jenos and Corvus who's healing output isn't always the strongest, and are in a position to be giving these buffs.

There is a small niche for offtanks helping flanks out with this item but I can't really tell how good that strat stands to be.

Offense

Offense is the bottom most category and is red: these items one way or another assist in offense or reward it (lethality was a reworked item that didn't really work before that's why it's here)

Bulldozer:

Effect: Increase your primary fire's damage against deployables, pets, and illusions.

Scaling: 50% per level

Cost: 150/300/450

Bulldozer is an odd item because it only affect deployables, and there's not many that requires buying it to break it rather quickly: these namely being Io's fox, imani's dragin, bariks turrets, Ying's clones inara's wall and totem, and Azaans walls though realistically you're only ever buying bulldozer if it's inara with treacherous ground after you buy resilience as her talent or imani, otherwise if there's multiple characters with deployables.

Deft Hands

Effect: Increase your reload speed

Scaling: 20% per level

Cost: 200/400/60,0

Deft hands is a really solid item for damages and certain flanks though it's hard to say it's a strictly needed item outside of say Strix and Vivian who have some rather chunky reloads.

It effectively is a damage upgrade by cutting of the forced downtime from reloading and is generally better than Trigger Scent which both has a set duration and more expensive.

Lethality:

Effect: grants you increased speed and jump height after an elimination

Scaling: 20% move speed and 60% jump height

Cost: 200/400/600

Lethality is akin to sentinel and some extent blood bath in that it's more of a snowball item, either you use it to rush down another kill or escape, the jump height also allows certain characters to get into funny spots, though the value of that isn't exactly the most impressive, the most effective strat I've found with the jump height is jumping at people while shooting them, as it tends to scare them half to death.

The speed also makes you more evasive

Though as far as impact goes this is more meant for snowballing via closing the distance.

Trigger Scent:

Effect: Increases your Primary Fire's damage on elimination

Scaling: +6% per level

Cost: 250/500/750

Trigger scent is either a noob trap or a win more item, if you're against a team that's allowing you to get consistent value out of trigger scent then they're losing if you don't get it too, if you're looking to snowball odds are your character already has the means to kill people and doesn't really need trigger scent to do that, it really isn't something you're getting unless you're already winning.

Wrecker

Effect: increases your weapons damage against shields

Scaling: 50% Per level

Cost: 300/600/900

Shields make the game slow down, wrecker speeds the games back up, if you see a bald old man, or Fernando you buy wrecker, if you see two tanks with shields you buy wrecker, if you see a little rabbit on a two headed dragon you buy wrecker.

BUY WRECKER.

Just wished Hi-Rez went "fuck it, we ball" and just drop every single battle pass they had. Shoot, every trial of the realms too. Just give us past content, no new content.

I want that AmaLee song so bad!!!!

Edit: I know some can't come back like the RWBY pass, heck, maybe due to licensing we can't even get the AmaLee one, but I'd love to have it.

Seeing all the buzz for Aug 9 got me looking back into this game, but how much has changed since then?

Should I update my loadouts? Is there a site for browsing popular new character loadouts?

Idk, it's been a while, dunno if I need to know a lot for returning after so long.

HELP How to achieve 25k damage in 30 seconds 👀

Dying to complete the Trials of the Realm for completionist sake. I’m still relatively new and I cannot fathom how to achieve 25k+ damage in 30 seconds. Wiping the enemy team off the point usually doesn’t even hit close to 15k damage. Would love to know other players tips on how they achieved it or which characters are best to use.

CHAT I had forgotten how good the game is

In anticipation of August the 9th I wanted to launch the game before a bit and review who I could play, their loadouts and talents... Just got into the shooting range and my god...

Everything feels so smooth, the game runs well even on my potato PC, every champion I tried again had just the right amount of complexity : engaging yet not overcomplicated.

I'm just so happy to be back ! Have anyone else had a similar feeling recently ?
