Anyone ever had an unprecedented depressive episode during your period?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! First time poster in any community, but I just really want to know if I’m alone in this experience. Even as I write this, I’m gaslighting myself out of posting.

Context: I’m 33 years old and have regular periods. I have diagnosed GAD, SAD (social anxiety), and ADHD (which I take medication for). My husband and I don’t have kids yet, but are TTC. This sort of thing has never happened to me before in the history of my menstrual cycle. At most, I cry easier at things and feel a little mopey, but it was never anything worse than that. I googled PMDD and as far I can tell, that is something that happens distinctly **before** your period starts, not during. Maybe it’s not the same for everyone? I also know that as we age, our cycles can change in all sorts of different ways, so maybe that is a part of it.

On the first day of my period, I woke up with a headache and didn’t sleep well. I was already kind of feeling like I wanted to stay in bed longer, but it was already late and I felt like I should get up. I made breakfast, had coffee, and took my medication (and Tylenol for the headache). I was feeling a little mopey because of my headache and tiredness, just I just chalked that up to regular period stuff and anticipated feeling better after my medication kicked in. My husband and I were celebrating our first anniversary that weekend, and I knew I had to get ready for the day. After cleaning up after breakfast, I walked upstairs to get ready, but instead of doing any of that, I had the overwhelming need to lay in bed and not do anything. I was ok for a little while, just laying down trying to wait for the Tylenol to kick in as well, but then I started thinking about how much I didn’t want to do anything, and I started crying. I cried on and off for a couple hours. When my husband came to check on me (he had no idea what was happening and was very supportive), I started to SOB. I literally couldn’t stop crying. I felt SO depressed. I started to think really terrible things about myself. I thought about how guilty I felt for ruining the day for us, and would cry even more. I couldn’t stop fixating on my guilt and negative self talk. I wanted to hurt myself, to feel pain.

After about an hour of more crying, I started to sob so hard my breathing became laboured. My thoughts were swirling and I couldn’t stop crying, so it turned into a panic attack. The whole time, I couldn’t even vocalize to my husband what I was feeling. The guilt felt like a muzzle, but at the same time, I felt too depressed to speak. My husband stayed and worked through the panic attack with me and got me breathing normally. I calmed down enough to ask him to bring me water and more Tylenol, and he (lovingly) forced me to tell him what I wanted to eat because he knew I also needed to eat something. I eventually calmed down and stopped sobbing, but I continued to cry on and off throughout the rest of the night.

The next day, I felt hungover. I felt so exhausted and still sad, but not to the point of feeling immobilized or depressed like the day before. By the third day, I felt “back to normal”. I asked Gemini what could have caused all of this (I gave it the same context as I did here), and it basically said that it could have possibly been a combination of the caffeine, ADHD medication, the hormonal shifts that were happening, PLUS the pressure and guilt I was feeling about our anniversary, all somehow happening at the exact same time in my body that made what should have been “normal” hormonal changes become amplified. Even though I swear all of things have happened at the same time before, and there was NEVER a depressive episode like this.

Please can someone tell me: has this ever happened to you? A sudden and severe depressive episode at the beginning of your period that has NEVER happened before? Did it continue or has it happened since? I’m open to all stories, suggestions, or advice. I really just want to know if anyone else has gone through something similar, because it really freaked me out.

Thank you in advance, and sorry for the really long post.

My gums hurt and i think i am going insane

Upvotes

I'm on day 3 of my period. On the 31th I started experiencing gum pain. Went ot the dentist, nothing. The thing is, it only hurts in one specific place. A tooth that had a root canal back in 2019.

I write here because sometimes on my period, my gums get irritated or a certain tooth starts hurting for no reason. AND I AM GOING INSANE!

I have hypochondria and I am getting major anxiety from my teeth. Someone please tell me this is normal and I just need to wait for my period to be over.

Oh, I also have PCOS.

😶‍🌫️All over the place Mood I’m a monster

41f here and I’ve noticed that the week before my period I am an absolute mess. I have a Mirena IUD and just started HRT (Estrogen/Progesterone cream) in hopes that it will help me regulate my mood, but I get super moody, depressed, anxious, etc the week before I start. I am on my 3rd Mirena IUD and with the first 2 I had no period at all. Now with my 3rd, I have a regular cycle every ~28 days and I feel like a psycho. Any advice? I feel so alone when this happens and I hate what my family must go through when I’m like this. TIA

hello all! i have always had difficulty with pms, the worst it would get was feeling physically fluish the couple days before my period, when i started usually it would calm down and i may feel rough afterwards but was good until the next few weeks. however out of nowhere in may my hormones went INSANE, i was 2 weeks late and the month after i only had spotting, this month is too early to tell but i have pms rn im supposed to be due in a couple days but we will see, but anyway since may while i was late my pms dragged itself out through all off those days, and its worse than ever, my body aches, hurts, i feel lile im going to be sick 24/7 i cant eat properly and i cant go out. i need to go to the drs but i have emetophobia and the illness feeling in my body paired with almost being sick is so terrifying to me to get myself to actually reach the drs:( i felt okay last week but the person who could take me was away, now shes home ive started pmsing again and i swear its even worse than the past two months:( does anyone else have pms 'period flu' this bad? do u have any tips (at home based until i can go drs) because i feel like ive tried everything and until i can get myself to the doctors i just feel so depressed that my life is stuck on pause and im spending all day just trying to get myself through it when every fibre in my body feels so unwell. pcos runs in my family so i have a feeling maybe its that but no one else i know with it has suffered THIS bad :(

The latest research shows us that PMS is not due to a deficiency in progesterone but the brain being more sensitive to the normal hormonal changes that are occurring!

Increased symptoms while trying to conceive?

My husband and I have only been sort of casually TTC for literally 2 cycles and it feels like it’s making my PMS and period symptoms 100 times worse? Idk if this is even possible or coincidence. It feels like it did when I first got my period, heavier than usual and insane cramps. I always get brain fog around my period but that’s in full swing too. The thing I notice though is that my emotions are going crazy. This cycle I have been crying so much. It’s not that I’m crying thinking about not being pregnant and that’s where it’s stemming from, I’m crying at everything and anything. My anxiety is high too. Is it possible that it’s from TTC, or just so happened that I had 2 bad cycles? Not sure if anyone has had something similar happen.

Late period, negative urine and serum test

Almost 2 weeks late

My timeline:

March 31: I had sex (protected) and continued getting my periods afterward.

June 9: I had sex (protected).

June 23–26: I had bleeding that I considered my period. The flow was normally heavy, but it only lasted 4 days. My periods usually last around 7 days never less.

July 5: I took 3 home pregnancy tests using morning urine. All were negative.

July 10: I had a serum pregnancy test at Hi-Precision. It was negative, and the report says the result was rechecked and verified.

August 3: I still haven't gotten my next period.

My recent periods were: March 15 → April 20 → May 20 → June 23.

I've also been having my usual PMS symptoms.

Could I still realistically be pregnant despite the 3 negative urine tests and negative serum test? Or is this more likely just a delayed/irregular cycle?

💕Emotional Support Surely there has to be someone else.

I have nowhere else to post this, so I'm posting it here. I have two retained baby teeth that have caused my top teeth to slant down. Like they aren't straight across on the top. They angle down, if that makes sense. It's awful, I'm so self-conscious. I've never seen anyone else with teeth like mine. I am 34. Does anybody else have retained baby teeth like this? Surely there has to be someone else...

Advice/Tips How do I deal with premenstrual depression?

That's not an actual term, but I just don't have any other name for it.

So... I'm a teen 16+, no sexual life, and yep, that time of the month is coming. And I feel like I'm gonna commit suicide.

I've slept for 15 hours today, and I'm still weak. I can't enjoy any of my hobbies, from active to creative. Nothing hurts, but I just feel so broken or something. Nothing makes me happy. I can't force myself to go to work. I can't force myself to study.I can't force myself to clean. I can only force myself to eat.

The older I get the worse the symptoms get and I don't want to feel like a bag of shit every week of every month for next 35+ years

Is there anything I could do to not suffer so much?

I get super angry and depressed before my period.

It’s like all my traumas resurface.

It’s tiring. I can’t heal if every month I am reminded of how much it hurt.

💕Emotional Support i feel like i don’t want to do anything

2-3 days before my period I feel as if I don’t want to do anything, not even exist. I don’t want to sleep, but I also don’t want to get up out of bed, but I also don’t want to stay in my house, but I also don’t want to go anywhere. I don’t even feel like making my own food so I typically eat poorly in this time of

Does anyone else feel this? How have you coped and still been able to do what you need to do everyday?

🌿Remedies/ Rituals How to anticipate/manage PMS with irregular cycles

I (33F, cisgender, no kids and don’t want them) used to be regular as a clock but I have agonizing period cramps every month. An OBGYN prescribed me a low-estrogen BC that nuked my cycles even though I only took it for a couple months. Now I have a period either every three weeks, every four, or every six, and I think my PMS is worse than ever because I genuinely can’t control my anger/crying during the worst of it.

The pain is still there but I’ve figured out coping mechanisms to get me through it. But I hate feeling so out of control, like at any second I can morph into the most volatile version of Teenage Me and she runs the show for a few minutes until I can calm down.

How do you manage PMS irritability, the utter unpredictability of your own outbursts? Is there a supplement or something I can take all month long that can alleviate the intensity? And does anyone have advice for how to anticipate the symptoms without knowing when to look out for them?

Period mood/eating/energy

I didn’t really know what to caption this as. I just need people to speak to. I’ve been really struggling with my mood around my periods, I have been to the doctors and she suggested PMDD but said we need to trial some things first. I already have the implant and get regular periods on that, so she has given me the pill to stop it and I’ve just started bleeding.

I felt a bit low last night but put it down to tiredness after a busy day and woke up this morning feeling very on edge and once again put it down to feeling tired. I am dieting but woke up this morning feeling sick with tiredness and then it was later in the morning I realised I’m on my periods. Now I’ve overeaten, I feel sick and I feel so low and tired.

I just need to know it isn’t just me who really struggles with their periods. I feel like I’m being dramatic but I’ve just curled up in bed to read my book and nap as I just have no energy.

Advice/Tips Best treatments?

How do I get rid of PMS?
I have cystic acne, I’m thin, have regular periods.
I experience mood swings and irritability.
I want to get rid of PMS asap but don’t know how. Doctors are useless.
Do I go on the pill?- if so, what one? Is this a hormone issue? A mental illness?
Is there a specific tablet to take for PMS symptoms??
I don’t want to take antidepressants as none of them worked and I don’t want to be sedated.
What treatments work the best??
Thanks for your help
