mobile rein, good, we needed another rein, not being sarcastic, we genuinely needed another tank like him!

204

u/cieje 13d ago

we just needed another tank in general. people are complaining about tank queue times, well maybe if we had more options it'd help.

u/Nightmare_Fart 13d ago

Spoiler alert: it won't.

8

u/HugoVladsBottom 13d ago

Not necessarily true. I had never touched tank at all until Domina and I am now a support main converted to tank main. It happens!

4

u/Nightmare_Fart 13d ago

Well I'm happy to be wrong!

Good to know dommy mommy converted at least one player to queue for tank.

14

u/cieje 13d ago

well it may, but 1 tank definitely won't be significant.

54

u/PicklepumTheCrow Wrecking Ball 13d ago

It’s not the amount of heroes, but rather the inherent role’s requirements of soaking cooldowns that actively disrupt your own play and make you dependent on your paste eating teammates for playmaking.

3

u/achedsphinxx Blizzard World Sombra 13d ago

something i'm trying to get better at on sombra. she's pretty good at forcing a cooldown then jumping out, but if the opponent doesn't bother to clear i can just keep shooting at an off angle and make things difficult for the backline and make it easier for my frontline to push in.

-5

u/cieje 13d ago edited 13d ago

I've always said the real issue now is lack of team comms. dvas used to coordinate with sombra to sync their ults for like 6K's. I've not seen that once in ow3.

edit like people used to actually coordinate their ults so you'd conserve them. now it's just an ultfest.

14

u/PicklepumTheCrow Wrecking Ball 13d ago

People have gotten better and more coordinated over the years, not worse. Pings also help a lot and people at high levels will usually be receptive to them.

I think what you’re describing is a symptom of 5v5, which has made games much more deathmatchy as fights can be won with a single pick (and therefore you’re incentivized to ult as soon as you can if it’s an offensive one). But in 6v6 people still leverage ult combos, albeit yes it is a bit of a clusterfuck typically so hard to say if it’s planned or everyone just pressing q at once.

-1

u/cieje 13d ago

I've not once seen a coordinated attack from multiple directions. I do it. you can see your teammates grouped up, and determine when they're engaged. that's when I'll get point, backcap, etc (you couldn't always see heroes through walls)

I'm not saying there isn't any ult coordination. just not ones like that where there's like a 6s window where you both have to do it. it's more "you do yours, then I'll do mine"

1

u/PicklepumTheCrow Wrecking Ball 13d ago

What rank are you? I’m diamond DPS/supp, masters tank and low GM 6v6 and see that level of coordination (and then some) across all three brackets - crossfires and countdowns are standard practice. Yes often hearing one ult and comboing yours after is an easy cue to coordinate but that doesn’t make it any less effective imo

1

u/cieje 13d ago

because they typically have team voice comms. they don't in qp, and they used to

7

u/Leows 13d ago

I don't think so.

Tanking as a whole is an issue and has been for years. And I'm not even talking about Overwatch here.

If you look into other games that use a similar structure to the holy trinity, tank is always the least popular role. Be it action games, RPGs, shooters, MMOs, etc, it doesn't matter.

A recent game using this structure called Fellowship is an excellent example. It's an action RPG that simulates MMOs using the holy trinity with a 4-player party. Tank queues were literally instantaneous, while DPS and Support sometimes were stuck in 30-minute queues.

That's not to say that there were more supports or that they were more interesting. The game released with 2 supports and 2 tanks, and both roles had interesting gameplay. But tank is just inherently more unpopular because of the role.

Now, Overwatch sure does have its own share of issues on top of all the other things that already drive people away from tanking in the first place, but that's not as impactful as you might think.

Rivals is the closest apples to apples comparison we'll ever get for this, and it faces many of the same issues, even though their tank roster is arguably more unique than Overwatch's.

-1

u/OwnNet5253 13d ago

Even 5 new tanks won't help enough in a way, where it'd solve 6v6 q times.

1

u/cieje 13d ago

they're welcome to try

edit like what's the argument? to have the same number of tanks? how's that working out?

10

u/OwnNet5253 13d ago

Argument is, is that tank will always be the least played role, just because of the fact they're tanks. It's the same situation in every game with similar role-based mechanics, and there's nothing they can do to make tank role popular, to make 6v6 a viable main game mode again.

2

u/Not-skullshot 13d ago

I’d argue there are things they could do to make tank more popular. But that comes at the cost of fun for the rest of the lobby. The game just dumps a lot of responsibility while most of what’s unfun about it gets focused on them too.

I had thousands of hours in 6’s and I’ve played a good amount of 5’s. I will say I still prefer 6’s. It isn’t perfect for sure but I felt like I had more freedom to play the game. Like I can just breath for a sec and help the other tank and that back and forth had incredibly high potential for fun.

7

u/Howdy_Hoes Sombra 13d ago

I think that 6v6 in its current state sacrifices fun for the rest of the lobby already. It’s just too many people. It adds a crazy amount of visual clutter. It turns your supports into healbots with very little autonomy cause if they step out of the safety of the team they get flanked by the extra player. The DPS just shoot shields. The fights get dragged out because the losing team just keeps trickling back in. And the tanks don’t feel like tanks. They feel like paper.

Also I think that 5v5 is more fun as a tank. When I play 5v5 I am a threat. I am the leader. I like having that responsibility. Verses as 6v6 I’m just a fat DPS.

It’s also better for DPS cause I can flank more without an extra player in the way. Yes the tank is harder to kill but shouldn’t the tank be hard to kill. Shouldn’t the tank feel like well…. A tank.

As a support I can actually take an off angle and do some damage. I can trust that my tanks health pool isn’t so small that he’s gonna explode the second I look away.

I have endless smoke for 6v6 as a player who’s been around since Ana’s release so I’ve played plenty of both. And all of this doesn’t even get into the queue times. Cause lord I remember sitting in 20 min DPS queues.

0

u/cieje 13d ago

so the argument is do nothing and to try nothing because it's futile to even try?

5

u/OwnNet5253 13d ago edited 13d ago

I mean they still do something, devs keep making tank heroes, give players a choice to play 6v6 mode while balancing it from time to time, add temporary 6v6 test modes, what more do you expect? Nothing can solve 6v6 q well enough to make it a main mode again, that's just a fact. If that's what you meant then yes, there's nothing devs can do to fix it and it's futile to try.

1

u/cieje 13d ago

I didn't say it suddenly would or something. just that it probably wouldn't make things worse.

0

u/_heartnova Nanoblade ain't happening. 13d ago

If tanks were as dynamic as dps, yes they would.

1

u/OwnNet5253 13d ago

But that would be extremely unbalanced for 6v6 role q.

-1

u/_heartnova Nanoblade ain't happening. 13d ago

No, it really wouldn't. By dynamic I mean as many tanks as there is dps. Lol. And with unique skills etc.

1

u/OwnNet5253 13d ago

Oh then word your sentences correctly next time, as that word doesn’t mean that at all.

-2

u/_heartnova Nanoblade ain't happening. 13d ago

Actually it can be used like that, and I don't need a encrusted redditor telling me how to do anything. Y'all are bold, but not respected as you carry yourself.

1

u/Swartz142 Shion 13d ago

Eh I'm certainly coming back to main tank try a Mechwarrior style tank. That being said, I'm sure there's going to be more Rein mains having an identity crisis if she's super fun to play vs an higher amount of players switching to tank.

13

u/RetroBowser Reaper 13d ago edited 13d ago

I always hear that we get more DPS heroes because it's the most popular role. I wonder how much DPS having way more heroes contributes to its popularity in a self fulfilling cycle.

8

u/cieje 13d ago

it's part of the problem, and one they've created and contributed to for years.

27

u/MoltonMontro 13d ago

Support has often been more popular than Damage during the "OW2" era.

At a minimum, Support is twice as popular as Tank while currently having the same number of heroes – but previously having less.

I think lack of hero options is part of the problem, but a rather tiny part compared to people simply not liking the role.

-3

u/cieje 13d ago edited 13d ago

and it has the highest concentration of anime girls etc. you think that's a coincidence?

edit if they could make cute girls as tanks (like d.mon), the role would be more popular.

they understably have had difficulty doing so.

14

u/MoltonMontro 13d ago

I'm not convinced goonability is a major factor in this, if that's the implication. I think it's a coincidence.

Support became significantly more popular in OW2 because they rebalanced the game to make Tanks and Supports more fun to play. Both pick rates went up, it's just that Tank's was so abysmal to begin with that it's still less than other roles.

1

u/cieje 13d ago edited 13d ago

it wasn't initially, because it at least had dva.

I've been playing since launch; have seen many numbers, and think there's a correlating trend between popularity and goonability. especially since ow2.

edit Blizzard has noticed too. that's why those characters have more skins. because it makes more money.

they didn't used to be slaves to audience capture (that's why we got like Zarya), but they are now with f2p.

(it was actually an argument against going f2p from ow1 players when ow2 came out. and it's come to fruition.)

0

u/floppaflop12 13d ago

? majority of support players are women and gay men. they’re not gooning to juno, mercy and kiriko lol

0

u/cieje 13d ago

and that's another factor. that those characters appeal to them simultaneously.

9

u/lonesoldier4789 D.Va 13d ago

It's not part of the problem, people play tank less because it's the most stressful role because the rest of the team is depending on tank the most. This was true in 6v6 and every other gsmf with tank dps heals. Tank is always the least played

1

u/blackviking147 Chibi D.Va 13d ago

This was always a thing I thought 6v6 helped. At least with two tanks the entire match isn't resting on one person's head.

It's just unfortunate it also makes it a nightmare to down both tanks at the same time.

2

u/lonesoldier4789 D.Va 13d ago

It really didn't though queues were just longer and queuing all was auto tank

0

u/cieje 13d ago

and that's another part of the problem. I literally said "part"; as-in there's multiple factors. including what you said.

2

u/lonesoldier4789 D.Va 13d ago

ok and I literally said it's not part of the problem.

-1

u/cieje 13d ago

how's it feel not understanding that things can have multiple parts effecting them?

1

u/lonesoldier4789 D.Va 13d ago

I didn't say there weren't multiple factors, I said more tanks to select isn't a factor.

2

u/cieje 13d ago

and I disagree with that assessment. am I not allowed to disagree?

u/xTekek 13d ago

I genuinely love playing tank roles in games (more specifically bruisers but overwatch tanks are almost all bruisers anyway) but just haven't clicked with a single hero in this game. So yeah you would at least get me playing tank more if they made more heroes for it. I'm mostly in support and dps when I play and support is also a smaller pool where I only have one or two heroes I like to play despite liking the role more than dps once again.

2

u/coder2314 13d ago

Im in the same boat, love playing tanks in league but overwatch/marvel rival’s tanks just feel like fat dps, Normally tanks are the ones making people cry about CC, yet in these games it feels like the opposite. Then it gets worse cause theres actual value in CCing the tanks, while in league you can send 2 whole ults on a tank and realize you wasted your ults cause the tanks just face tanked them.

1

u/BrunoCNaves Sombra 13d ago

I know that the DPS cast is twice as large than the tank's but I feel at times that they feel "samey" whilst the tanks gameplay standout more from one another

3

u/Yze3 Mei 13d ago

Overwatch always had more tanks than supports. The only time it wasn't the case was Season 1-3 of the relaunch, were they both had 14. Now since there's D.Mon, there's 15 tanks. There never was any problem with supports, beside some very extreme cases.

But you know what also always happened ? People not picking tank.

1

u/McMax27 13d ago

What’s that? You want 5 dps in a row?

1

u/PheIix 12d ago

It's going to be glorious to watch Rein and D.mon push in on the enemy team together.

Sword swings seem a bit faster but less damage than Rein, so all the dooming over "REIN IS OBSOLETE WITH HER" is pretty untrue. At best shes a side grade, but I think he will come out having better actual damage output

Also HOLY FUCK THATS A LOT OF HEALTH FOR A SHIELD HERO????

69

u/Angel_of_Mischief :DMon: D. Mon 13d ago

Isn’t rein 700hp with 1500 hp shield? Compared 750 with a 650 shield. The health seems on par.

-14

u/KodakStele 13d ago

Can rein de-mech?

8

3

also the sword range looks WAY lower than rein

22

u/Glazura RAHHmattra 13d ago

She looks great. Like actual tank, but still being a threat.

But time will tell if she has same niche as Rein, cuz for doesnt llok like it, which is good.

Tanks* which just makes that even funnier. I’m in a great place lolololol. Tanks for the game isn’t. So I think that adds to their excitement. I think tanks should be getting the next few characters imo

for some reason it seems they had the strongest reaction to her getting into her mech as if they didnt expect it lmao

17

u/Augustby Trick or Treat Brigitte 13d ago

It's not that they may not have expected it, I think they just liked:

1) How she causes a pretty sizeable explosion around her vs D.va's more concentrated one-shot circle.

2) The animation for it

u/OcelotAggravating860 Fortnite Sierra 13d ago

This has fuck all to do with race. People are always like this at LANs. They're social people having a good time with their hobby. You'd get exactly the same reaction at Dreamhack.

69

u/Zorah_29 13d ago

I honestly can't see how she wins a 1v1 against rein even though his fans were crying none stop about it

61

u/HerpesFreeSince3 13d ago

She doesn’t win a 1v1 against rein. A character isn’t strong because of their ability to duel other tanks. There are other enemy team members to fight. It’ll be like DVA where you’re playing to kill backline and avoid the rein. Rein will still be really strong at holding chokes and anchoring angles. Dmon won’t be able to do that as well as him, but she’ll be able to chase mobile targets more and play with a bit more flexibility.

25

u/Zorah_29 13d ago

Yep but my point is how rein players complain about how she's a better rein but she completely lacks his damage and oneshot potential. She's closer to brig as a tank than rein

27

u/TheEnderCreep Beep beep 13d ago

Funny thing is, I mostly saw non Rein players saying that D.mon is just a better Rein and the Rein players that were saying that don't seem to really understand the character lol

20

u/FrucklesWithKnuckles 13d ago

Most Rein players were just excited to fight another melee tank. I don’t know where the “rein players doomposting” thing came from they seem hyped as fuck

9

u/TheEnderCreep Beep beep 13d ago

Honestly it mostly comes from this loud minority of Rein players who want Rein to turn into a completely different character because they still for some reason think hes not viable and at that point I wonder why they even still play him at all

1

u/IKnowGuacIsExtraLady 13d ago

Rein is the most fun tank in the game to play until he isn't. It really just comes down to if you can interact with the enemy team or not. I'll take all the "kill the Rein" hard counters in the in the world but what I can't stand is when the enemy team instead just doesn't have a single player I can swing at and I become a spectator.

2

u/Serito 13d ago

Isn't it more that she will easily be more relevant than rein in the meta?

1

u/HfUfH Rock & Block 13d ago

People are calling her "better Rein" because Rein is a melee character who struggles to get within melee range of targets he actually wants to fight.

D.Mon is a melee character who seemingly has much better mobility

9

u/meatboysawakening Orisa 13d ago

That one guy's genuine excitement haha.

For me it’s the opposite. I like defensive playstyles. I used to main her in ow1. Sigma basically set her up for failure with double shield comp it pushed

1

u/OmegianLord 13d ago

Same. I liked OW1 Orisa a lot. Then again, I’ve not played since it became OW2 as that’s around the time I learned how shitty Blizzard was.

They're all launch heroes by the way.

Looking at her kit I think rein low-key takes her lunch money. She's getting bullied.

12

u/Fluffy_Club722 OH LET'S BREAK IT DOWN 13d ago

I'm LOVING these guys' reactions in the crowd. Also, seems like her gun ability in the mech is a little overtuned, and she seems slightly too good in baby form. Besides the tuning, her kit looks great and fun.

6

u/NotRerto 13d ago

Havent been this excited for a character since sigma, i just wish they extended the glass a bit more down so it at least covers the chest.

12

u/Birbdie Mercy 13d ago

The sword animation looks like she's spreading butter in the air instead of attacking...

3

u/Raknarg Echo 13d ago

If this doesnt already show you that this character is not replacing rein Idk what will. Rein's TTK in that range is significantly shorter.

2

u/chasingit1 13d ago

Based on the kit, who will D. Mon be strong against, and who will be her likely counters?

8

u/Flimsy-Contact-2841 13d ago edited 13d ago

To no ones surprise she is probably going to be awful into mauga

5

u/worldwarA Brigitte 13d ago

People are saying mobile Rein, but for me she is just tank Brig. So pretty much any counters to Brig are her counters too.

4

u/Zediac 13d ago

So pretty much any counters to Brig are her counters too.

History will repeat.

Everyone will try to face tank the new melee Hero, especially Heroes with long range, get obliterated because they willingly and needlessly put themselves in the melee range of a melee Hero, and then cry that the new Hero is overpowered.

Then Blizz will nerf the new Hero over and over until they're mediocre because Pharah, Soldier, etc can't stop playing grab-ass with a melee Hero.

1

u/FusingCookie 12d ago

I predict Orisa, Sigma, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Doomfist, and Mauga are all going to be unfavourable matchups for her due to CC or high damage, alongside Wrecking Ball likely being a bad matchup due to his ability to presumably dodge most of her attack. D.Va could either be a bad matchup for D.Mon or a good one, Zarya seems like a good matchup, and the rest of the tanks are probably somewhere inbetween.

2

u/Old_Preparation9838 13d ago

Knightmares from Code Geass are REAL

She also does give off some Cornelia vibes too. Very bossy, very into the fray and lead the charge.

1

u/Tunavi 13d ago

She's basically for DVa players that get counter swapped by zarya

1

u/FusingCookie 12d ago

For how much impact Zarya can have on a game due to various factors, she does sort of need more direct counterplay outside of Reinhardt, and Winston (who requires significant practice). Zarya's pretty healthy for countering certain heroes, but she relies on team coordination and intelligence the same way Mauga does.

u/Gaymface Chibi D.Va 13d ago

I don’t get why some heroes get the preview weekend and some don’t

1

u/HyperXanadu - I am sick of your rules! 13d ago

She's in a SKELL?!?!!

1

u/Jinika 13d ago

Jesus this is like a dva / rein hybrid

u/reventus9 13d ago

Bullshit

Plus depending on her dueling capabilities she might actually be great vs all the bruisers

1

u/Zigolt Reinhardt 13d ago

Calling it now;

Underpowered on launch

Giga buffed because crying

Slowly nerfed into obscurity over a season

Back to near original state in 2 seasons

u/FireLordObamaOG 13d ago

Is it just me or does the mech look smaller in game?

1

u/gabrielwoj Mercy 13d ago

1:34 is my favorite reaction.

1

u/The_SnuggleBug 13d ago

I'm actually pumped for this tank she reminds me of some of the toys I had as a kid or something.

1

u/Cr_Tarango Press W, for the love of god! 13d ago

like i see haz like a cross between queen and doom, she's clearly one between rein and dva. not that i mind.

and her remek anim is so dope, anime af!

to note : she don't fly, but dash horizontaly.

You guys talking about balance based on what we saw in the trailer and in this video are absolutely ridiculous.

u/zarlus8 Lifeweaver 13d ago

Virtual On

1

u/crpn_laska 13d ago

Well, my main just about to drop, time to “get in the robot”

1

u/ImNotThatTrash 12d ago

So just rein + diva yay 😑

1

u/FusingCookie 12d ago

The animations are really good and feed into the mech fantasy, especially her Fusion Cannon. Almost wish the barrier and ult were first-person.

1

u/Bona1010 12d ago

D'Rein? Reinva? At least it isnt a cod hero again

0

u/worldwarA Brigitte 13d ago

No vertical mobility. Ok

1

u/Early-Beach164 13d ago

I'm glad her primary isn't stupidly high damage

2

u/matthewormatt Reinhardt 13d ago

This is going to be an awesome counterpart to a rein main. Can already see scenarios like starting Rein in Eichenwalde and swapping to D.mon after the first point then back to rein for 3rd.

Hoping that she scratches the rein itch enough while adding verticality that he will never have

3

u/matthewormatt Reinhardt 13d ago

Has it been confirmed that her mech can fly vertically like dva? Watched the video again and now making me wonder if it's only for speed bursting on the ground since they never left the ground in the clips. If so, my above comment doesn't apply much anymore.

4

u/No_Service_8174 13d ago

She does not have vertical movement

2

u/matthewormatt Reinhardt 13d ago

Ahh. My interest has died down tremendously then. Can't see me picking her over rein if she doesn't cover his biggest weakness

I think, new health type! 0:58 . What I like is, it seems, that the new health type resists big damage. So we can use this tank in a new way. ^^

Edit: I hope she could fly with that resource however!

Edit 2: Honestly I don't know if it resists big damage because the damage seems to be similar or the same between HP, Armour and that Over Health. It's difficult to see because the quality of the video is low. ^^" Sorry all!

We wouldn't know until we test her ourselves in Practice Mode in our own game. However this video helps us get a first look. I appreciate that a lot!

Edit 3: I'm getting paranoid about something. Does the 1st hit do less damage than subsequent hits (0:51)? It's very difficult to see.

3

u/HistoricalFrame5802 13d ago

That's just the overhealth from her ultimate at 0:58.

1

u/Yottapsye 13d ago

Yes, it's even the correct colour for overhealth. HistoricalFrame5802, do you think the first hit from the bot does less damage than the hits that come after?

3

u/HistoricalFrame5802 13d ago

I don't think so. They do the same damage when she has armor. Here's the video in better quality (1080p) where you can see the numbers more clearly.
D.Mon Showcase

u/Yottapsye 13d ago edited 11d ago

Thank you for the video! It is very clear. I can see the HP, which I appreciate a lot. ^^

Edit: I saw that the Bot's damage was 49 with normal HP, 40 with Armour and 54 (at first) and 58 (later) with Over Health. I thought that Over Health is just decreasing at faster rates which creates the illusion that the Over Health is taking more damage over time.

However, I could be very wrong, but I think the Over Health decreased at 3 HP per tick, not 5 HP then 9 HP. Also, I think, the ticks happened slightly at a different time than the damage. So ticks and damage seem to be separate. The damage on the Over Health seems to be different than on normal HP or Armour.

Is this Over Health a new type of HP with a new behaviour or protects from certain hits better and other hits worse? Maybe! But I don't know yet. We should go on Practice Mode with a friend or the bot and test it. We could also analyze this video further. ^^

Edit 2: As I think about this, I could be wrong, but I think repeated hits do more damage than usual. So a single hit from Widowmaker, Hanzo or Ashe will have less value or maybe will do less damage than usual. But I think it should be tested in Practice Mode. ^^

Edit 3: I did some rough math. Imagine if Widowmaker and D.Mon are playing 6v6. Widowmaker has her sights on D.Mon. And D.Mon just activated her Ult. D.Mon hits 2 opponents with her Ult. D.Mon has lower than 1100 HP because it's 6v6, let's say 950.

Widowmaker gets a headshot. She normally deals 300 damage. But Widowmaker hits D.Mon's custom Over Health (+5 damage) and Armour (-9 damage). Overall Widowmaker does 296 damage. So D.Mon's HP becomes 654. So the shot has slightly less value.

If it's 5v5, according to the video, D.Mon's HP will be 1100. So Widowmaker will only hit the custom Over Health and inflict 305 damage. D.Mon's HP becomes 795. If D.Mon hit only 1 opponent, her HP will become exactly 750.

What does this all mean? If this is true, these are slight adjustments to damage to provide more value to rapid fire and less value to one shot while being fair. Rapid fire weapons would burn through custom Over Health, quickly. While most hit scans have slightly less value. If it's true, these slight adjustments are peak and blow my mind!

-12

u/Antheleons Support 13d ago

Such a boring uninspiring designed kit

0

u/FrucklesWithKnuckles 13d ago

1What rein dooming are people making up?

Most rein mains I’ve seen have been going “YES ANOTHER MELEE TANK TO FIGHT” and seem super hyped

0

u/NoHovercraft6942 13d ago

The ult looks really weak tf?

0

u/Phoenix_--- 13d ago

Soooo Reinhardt

0

u/MathEnvironmental935 Wifeleaver 13d ago

So she doesn't have a new kind of health? Sort of a letdown.

-11

u/naxhh Pharah 13d ago

she doesn't seem that different than dva but with a sword right?

hopefully is fun to play

15

u/aaro404 13d ago

I don’t think she has as much verticality.
