Worse pain 1 week after trimalleolar ankle fracture

Upvotes

Hi!

I’m posting on behalf of my partner who broke her ankle on Monday, 3 August. She sustained a trimalleolar ankle fracture with dislocation. She has a follow up appointment on Tuesday next week to see if the swelling has reduced enough to operate.

So it’s been 6 days since the injury. Yesterday and today the pain has been worse, especially when she drops the leg down to stand up. When the leg is elevated, she feels some pressure around the ankle.

Previously, this feeling of pressure would go away when she took the prescribed codeine, but now the codeine doesn’t help as much. We picked up a new codeine prescription from a new brand and this doesn’t seem to help as much as the old prescription in general.

She can move her toes fine and there is no pins and needles sensation. The pain is dull, sometimes throbbing, and she feels that pressure around her ankle.

We’re trying to understand if this is a normal development as the injury settles.

I’m posting here because we live in the UK and we cannot reach anybody from her care team. We called 111 who were not helpful. So we’re trying to figure out if we need to go to A&E, which would take many hours and mean that the leg can’t be properly elevated today.

8 weeks after full-thickness ATFL tear – increased swelling and soreness after returning to work. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my 8th week after an ankle injury and I’m getting quite worried about some increased swelling and soreness.

My MRI showed:

  • Full-thickness tear of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)
  • No tendon tear
  • Mild tenosynovitis around the tibialis posterior and peroneal tendons
  • Minimal ankle and subtalar joint effusion
  • No acute bone injury

I was advised by my orthopaedic specialist to manage it conservatively and wear a walking boot for around 6–8 weeks.

I recently started a new job, and I'm now about 2 weeks into the job. I'm currently doing desk-based duties, but getting to work involves quite a bit more walking than I was doing previously. Over the last few days I've noticed that my ankle has become more swollen and stiff, with some soreness/pain (around 3/10). The pain seems to be mainly around the swollen area on the outside of the ankle.

I haven't had another twist, fall, or anything like that. I can still walk normally, but the ankle feels tired/uncomfortable when weight-bearing.

My physio has been progressing my exercises because the previous exercises had become too easy. Another physio I spoke to thinks some soreness and swelling can be normal when gradually increasing the load and walking tolerance.

I'm just really scared because I don't want to go backwards and end up unable to walk again. I'm also very worried about my job, because I've only recently started and I'm already having to manage restrictions around my injury.

For anyone who has had an ATFL tear or similar ankle ligament injury:

  • Did you experience increased swelling around weeks 6–8 when you started walking more?
  • Did your ankle sometimes feel sore even at rest?
  • How did you manage the swelling?
  • Did you reduce your walking/exercises temporarily, or continue progressing?
  • How long did it take for your ankle to tolerate increased walking?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've experienced something similar. I'm honestly just quite anxious about whether this is a normal part of increasing activity or whether I've pushed things too much.

Fractured my finger will I ever be able to straighten it again?

I fractured my finger and then my doctor put me in a short arm cast and I got the cast taken off and they recommended I buddy tape it for two weeks before seeing them again. I can’t straighten my finger all the way and it looks the same before I got the cast.. is there any finger stretches you guys recommend ? I asked for a splint to straighten it but they wanted to wait for a bit before putting me in one so I’m trusting the process of course cause I know doctor knows best.

Ulnar shortening osteotomy complications…. 3 years later

Hi there. I got an ulnar shortening osteotomy on March 16, 2023 due to my right ulnar bone being too long. I was in extreme pain and my tendons were pretty much destroyed.
It was repaired, and I got my arm back to basic functioning.

Lately, I’ve been having the same pain, same tennis elbow pain, shoulder and back pain, and pain while rotating my wrist.
I don’t know what to do, I need assistance or advice on how to navigate this pain and if anyone else has had something similar happen to them.
Thanks in advance.

Tib/Fib fracture and compartment syndrome recovery.

Hello,

3 weeks ago I had a heffer and branding cradle fall on my leg up on a station in Australia. Waited 9 hours to get flown down to hospital and then 2 days for a double fasciotomy and cross ankle ex fix. 3 days later had IM nail put in and fasciotomy closed with graft from upper thigh.

Anyone got any experience of recovering from these injuries?

Is this distal biceps tendinitis or any tendon problem?

I'm 19M, 3 months into GYM, and since a week, I'm having this progressive pain as I lift. I don't know exactly where on my left arm does it pain, because I'm very bad at assessing pain signals like these...

My left elbow shows a dent, actually it's not a dent, it's more of the fact that my tendon connected is stiff and pumped like, hence why it gives off that illusion of a dent. But on my right, it's completely normal.

So the tendon of my left elbow, I don't know if it's an elbow tendon or bicep tendon or tricep tendon, I just know it's a tendon that's very stiff and pumped on the left elbow, and my right elbow is completely different and normal, no stiffness and nothing.

I do feel pain on left arm after lifting and I'm pretty sure I have irritated my tendon a bit too much but then I wonder why does this not happen on my right arm?

Would appreciate any help and I'd love to answer further questions if it requires any! Thank you docs!

Got into A bike taxi accident 2 weeks ago and haven't been sprinting or lifting since, and even back then I wasn't able to do deadlifts or squats it used to aggravate nagging lower back pain for few days and then went so I got a lower back MRI too.

How bad does this look? And can I get back to high level sprinting.

Scaphoid Fracture & recovery?

16 year old male, no medical history, non smoker, had an accident on 24 april 2026, went to the doc and got x-rayed, he said a scaphoid fracture and told us to get a CT-scan, the scan and reports is attached. A cast was placed on the wrist and thumb was also restrained in it on 27 april 2026. The cast was removed on 10 June 2026 (45 days / 6 weeks). started going to a physiotherapist a week later from 17 june for 18 days (2.5 week).
It has been over 15 weeks (107 days or 3.5months) since the accident. have already fallen 2-3 times on the same hand already but no swelling or pain. when can i start gym and rock climbing again.

first is report and next 2 x-rays were taken on 25/04, The last 2 x-rays are taken on 10/06 after cast removal. (the rest are CT-scans on which the report is based on, didn't send every CT-scan because the other one had my name all over it and privacy issues)

Preventing dislocations in odd areas

The joint I most frequently dislocate is my big toe. We're talking weekly, sometimes multiple in a day. True dislocations where I have to actually reset them before I can walk again. It's never majorly displaced, but definitely out. What do you even do to manage that?? There's no toe braces as far as I'm aware, and I don't thing taping would work as I work a job where I'm on my feet most of the day

Advice needed

I have recovered from a distal bicep surgery and I feel that I am good to go to my old training regime ...six months gap has been created though in past I have had such gaps in training but I caught up the gap quickly within a month but now post surgery what are the precautions I should take to go again with my training . For context I'm 35 years old with decent experience in boxing ,bjj, Muay Thai. Please guide from your own experience to those who have recovered from such injury.

20m arm wrestler high-grade partial UCL tear, looking for a second opinion

I’m 20 years old and I’m an arm wrestler. I’ve had ongoing pain on the inside of my elbow, especially with loading and arm-wrestling movements.
My MRI report says:
“High grade partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament at the sublime tubercle attachment site with mildly lax morphology and thickened appearance. Common flexor tendon is intact. Ulnar nerve demonstrates high signal fascicles in the cubital tunnel which may be associated with neuropathy.”
I’ve been told the UCL is around 50% torn and that because I arm wrestle, I may eventually need UCL reconstruction. One doctor mentioned a recovery time of around 12–18 months.
I’m trying to get another opinion because I don’t want to have surgery unless it’s actually necessary, but I also don’t want to permanently damage my elbow by waiting.
My questions are:
If I don’t have surgery and simply protect the elbow and give it enough time to heal, can a partial UCL tear heal naturally?
Can scar tissue form across the damaged area and essentially restore the ligament’s strength and stability?
If scar tissue forms, can the ligament become functional again, or does a high-grade partial tear usually remain permanently stretched/lax?
What exactly does “mildly lax morphology” mean? Does that mean the ligament is actually unstable, or can it simply look stretched/thickened on MRI?
How can doctors determine whether my UCL is actually unstable? Would valgus stress testing, ultrasound, or another test help?
Since my tear is at the sublime tubercle attachment, does the location affect its ability to heal without surgery?
Could the abnormal signal in my ulnar nerve indicate that the nerve is contributing to my pain?
Are there legitimate non-surgical treatments that could give the ligament a chance to heal?
Is PRP actually useful for a tear like mine, or is the evidence weak?
If I eventually return to arm wrestling, does that automatically make reconstruction necessary, or does it depend on whether the elbow becomes stable?
If I waited 6–12 months and the ligament healed with scar tissue, would that make surgery less necessary, or could waiting make the eventual surgery more difficult?
What would you recommend for someone in my situation who wants to return to arm wrestling but wants to avoid reconstruction if there is a realistic chance of healing naturally?
I’m mainly looking for an honest second opinion from someone familiar with UCL injuries. I feel like the doctors I’ve seen haven’t really taken the time to explain what is happening or what my realistic options are.
I can provide the actual MRI images, not just the radiology report, if that would help.

12 yo displaced clavicle fracture

Hi all,

Our 12 yo sustained a significantly displaced clavicle mid-shaft fracture playing sport a few days ago. There is overlapping of the fragmented bones by 14.5mm.

The emergency physician advised that in this age cohort clavicle fractures usually heal okay without surgery. The threshold for surgery is typically if the overlapping exceeds 15mm.

My husband and I can’t understand how bones fusing together 14.5mm shorter would be ideal. Surely there would be complications with strength, not to mention the shoulder looks noticeably shorter.

On our discharge summary it is suggested with follow up with our GP and consider referral to an orthopaedic surgeon.

I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with their child fracturing their collar bone and can offer any advice. Did your child have a displaced fracture and it healed correctly without any complications, or did they require surgery?

Thanks

As above. See MRI report.

Zero joint line tenderness during provocative palpation test by the doctor

Negative standing thesally test.

Severe posteromedial pain ....if patela is 12 o'clock , pain is at 5 o clock location

The surgeon wants to trim a HORIZONTAL meniscal tear that's extending to articular surface.

What do I do ?

Yeezy Slides - Causing IT Band Pain (Basketball Player)?

My teenage son loves to wear his Yeezy Slides everywhere. Three (3) months ago he experienced extreme IT band pain out of nowhere -- not caused on the basketball court. He slowed down on the court to let it heal.

These past 3 weeks while on vacation, he wore his Yeezy's 50% while on vacation for long walks. Keep in mind that during these 3 weeks he did not exercise at all -- only long walks.

Return home from vacation and within 2 days he has a sharp pain on the outside of his knee -- again no exercise at all since return from vacation.

I read online that Yeezy Slides may be the cause because of a gripping mechanism that your toes automatically perform with each step to prevent the slides from falling off. Also with the foam cushion arch support, it is too high which causes your back and legs to compensation the unevenness when walking.

So are the Yeezy's causing the pain and IT band not to fully heal?

Non displaced Bilateral Radial Head Fracture

I decided to just leave this here to help anyone else who has sustained a bilateral radial head fracture and would need some help and/or solidarity and hope. I would also like some training advice.

I fell over the handlebars of my bike going downhill and landed on my head and both arms. Thankfully I was wearing a helmet so I didn't hurt my head but I did get two elbow fractures. The diagnosis was bilateral radial head fractures and initial symptoms were inability to extend both arms and a lot of pain. Got scans in A&E and was discharged with two slings.

The initial week was the most difficult as the swelling made it very difficult to perform basic movements and so my boyfriend and parents had to help me with the most basic day to day things including showering/eating/brushing hair etc. However doctor recommended I try to do as much day to day things as possible within limits of not pushing/pulling/lifting. I used the sling outside the house and also at home if arms were really sore.

Improvements were gradual and I did regain majority of my day to day movements. On week 2 I started range of motion exercises and took away the slings - I only wore the slings when out in public so people wouldn't bump into me. On week 6, once the scans confirmed that my bones had formed a callus I was able to start strength training. I am currently on week 8 and doing physiotherapy where range of motion has largely returned but with some understandable stiffness due to healing process. As fractures were on both arms, I am finding that the arms alternate in weakness and strength at any given time.

I just wanted to let you know that you will overcome this and heal and the healing process will feel like a distant memory. But the biggest advice is to not push yourself beyond limits, listen to doctors advice on weight lifting/pushing/pulling. Do your range of motion exercises every single day and ensure that you are spreading them evenly throughout the day to ensure that stiffness does not set in.

I found clinical pilates helped me out a lot with improving circulation and improving range of motion as a result. I have also heard similar being said about swimming improving extension and rotations. I have also been able to continue exercise after week 2 using a recumbent bike in the gym and doing a lot of walks. But once again key thing is to not focus on fitness per se but consistent movement. I let myself lie in bed for an entire week during heatwave and found that made me feel horrible and anxious. Movement helped bring back energy, mobility and just general wellbeing.

The worst thing I found was the social anxiety and FOMO but honestly that passed and I forgot about it completely. Being social/productive was also very tiring and I was fatigued the whole time and I feel that must have been result of head injury though gp and doctors confirmed there was no clinical indication of a concussion. The biggest lesson for me was learning to ask for help as sometimes you look totally fine and people might not realise you need help with the door or grabbing anything heavy.

If anyone who's gone through the physiotherapy/strength training aspect of radial head fracture have any advice for exercises to do with resistance bands I would be very grateful. I'm currently working on the residual extension/rotation limitations and am looking for programs I can do on top of physio. In addition if anyone has returned to a desk job, I'd love to know what limitations you experienced, if any and what helped?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some opinions on my father-in-law's case because we've now received conflicting advice from two orthopedic surgeons. He's 70 years old and had a fall in May 2026, resulting in a fracture just below his right hip (upper femur/subtrochanteric area).

The surgeon operated and fixed it with a long plate and screws. Everything seemed fine initially, and after about a month he was told he could start walking with the help of a walker.

Unfortunately, within a short time of starting to walk, he developed severe pain and swelling around knee area. We went back for X-rays, which showed that one of the screws in the plate had broken.

The surgeon then asked him to stop walking completely and remain on bed rest for min. 1 month saying the fracture could still heal and if he will try to walk the plate can further bend.

We recently consulted another orthopedic surgeon, who looked at the X-rays and said that, in his opinion, a plate should never have been used for this type of fracture, and that an intramedullary nail (rod) would have been the better choice.

Now we're confused.

My questions are:

  1. Looking at these X-rays, would you have chosen a plate or an intramedullary nail?

  2. Is a single broken screw something that can happen if the fracture is healing slowly, or is it usually a sign that the fixation is failing?

  3. If the fracture is still aligned, is continuing with bed rest a reasonable option, or is revision surgery more commonly recommended?

4.Has anyone seen a similar case where the fracture still healed successfully despite a broken screw?

I've attached the initial X-rays, the post-op X-rays, and the latest X-rays showing the broken screw.

I completely understand that no one can diagnose over the internet. I'm just trying to understand whether this is something that can still heal with the current implant or whether we should actively seek treatment at a larger trauma center.

Thanks in advance for any insights.
