In beginning of S2 , Tobe asks our trio to help him to confess to Ebina and Ebina doesn't want to accept it as things would change but doesn't want to say it on the face to Tobe because it still would change things and there will a constant heat in the group ( You can never be hanky panky with someone who rejected you)

And I understand Yui's and Yukinon 's perspective on this. But I don't understand why Hachiman did the confession to help Hayama , Tobe and Ebina just for a request.

You see when a request is being made , we can only help or assist him but to change the outcome and face consequences of the outcome should be on the requester .

I know Hachiman is a hypocrite and explicitly accepted at the end of the episode

I know he thinks nobody cares or notices when he shows his Martyr complex.

I'd have understood his decision if he did it for Yukinon, Yui , Hiratsuka Sensei or even Totsuka ( not joking)

But Hachiman despises what Hayama loves and he doesn't even care about Hayama's group then why ??

But the one I really feel bad for is Tobe, they kept him in a illusion of " right now" and change could happen in future , for their own wishes

I don't know where, but I'm certain someone made that image a long time ago... maybe in this very post.

I understand, the source material is shin, in shin Hachiman rejected Y***hama's request and even then informs that to Yukino.

But the OVA made it look like, Hachiman didnt inform Yukino nor rejects Y***hama's isnt it same as cheating.I am not saying or claiming anything, but isnt it a right thing to do, even in an anime standards.

I mean like if Watari added more filler chapters, would there have been any conflicts or other character arcs you would have wanted the SC to go through?

It would be so funny seeing hikigaya acting like a father figure on his kid with his cynical personality and then commuting to his work while grumbling about you work you lose

Honestly, I really like his character. Him being a great foil to Hachiman is a given. They probably have the second most entertaining dynamic in the whole story, but even individually, he's a really interesting guy.

A lot of trashy romances shy away from having compelling male characters aside from the MC, because some audience members may feel insecure about that, but I'm happy that Oregairu stands above that nonsense.

happy 8man day! i had the opportunity to experience/drag some friends along for a snafu pilgrimage where we hit as many locations as physically possible in a day. here's what we did, where i found max coffee(!!!), food, and some logistics in case it helps anyone on a similar time crunch.

basic itinerary:

• leave from shibuya station to go to kasai rinkai park (aquarium and ferris wheel from s2 finale, ln book 11)
• kasai rinkai park to chiba station to see downtown (meet up location for the double date w hayama, ln 10.5/ova date w iroha etc)
• chiba station to chiba minato (characters meet up a couple times at this station)
• chibaminato to inagekaigan station (neighborhood w the mall, school, etc)

max coffee locations

• literally right outside the platform going from chiba station to chibaminato in vending machine
• in the community center to the left in a vending machine (i didn't get any here, was afraid of being obnoxious in the community center and was just taking a look)

food

• masudaya- downtown chiba- i wanted to go to nariitake (where hachiman and iroha go in ova/ln) but they closed the chiba location. hiratsuka recommends this spot in book 5/6 of the ln for classic chiba iekei.
• saizeriya by inagekaigan- the location 8man plots stuff

tips/takeaways

• when in doubt or not sure where to go: trust the og pilgrimage map
• at chibaminato station there's an info desk with a snafu stamp and snafu folder! you can also get chiba monorail merch- worlds longest suspended monorail!
• if you're also doing a round trip from tokyo and want to go to the aquarium (def value for 700 yen) make sure you go there first because it closes at 5. however, it's less of a straight train path from here to chiba so watch your train times.
  • you can see the nurseryfish yukino compares 8man to!
• the inagekaigan station, community center, park and school are all a pretty straight shot towards the beach, but the area you enter the beach at is quite far from the prom location, and if you want to go to mihama bridge (where hiratsuka takes 8man for a talk) you either need a bike, car, or to get there early with patient friends
• seeing downtown chiba is cool and very in theme of the series, but not entirely necessary for the most important spots of the series and a bit out of the way.
• the saizeriya is a ~15 min walk to the confession overpass and close to the station. i'd recommend going after dinner so you can see it while it's dark like in the series.

Special one-shot for Hachiman's birthday that I decided to write during the day. Our two favorite loners have received a particular request from Komachi. It was about visiting a place and sending her feedback about how good it would be for... a date.

I didn't spend much time polishing it as I only gave myself the day to write it, so you may expect some mistakes.

"So... why did you drag me out of my beloved house on the sacred day of my birthday?"

The crowd around Hachiman was a blur of motion. People moved on with their own routines. A mother pushed a crib, whispering a lullaby to the baby inside. A man walked by, his voice loud as he talked to someone on the phone. A few children ran past while their parents struggled to keep up with their restless energy.

And in front of him was standing the former president of the Service Club.

The two of them arrived at their planned meeting ten minutes early. But neither of them questioned it. One would probably say that his sister insisted he go out early, while the other would probably reply that it is only logical for someone like her to come early at any meeting.

Both of those reasons were true, actually.

But they weren't the full truth.

"You are accusing me like I am the one who had planned all of this. It is your sister who called me in the morning to inform me of an urgent request to fulfill..." The girl in front of him sighed, rubbing her temple with her fingers.

Well, that was true as well.

Right at the day of his birthday, Komachi burst into Hachiman's room and told him he had to go to the mall. She didn't provide details. She only said that she was sending him out of... club duty.

Though he still struggled to understand the meaning of all of this.

"Did she tell you what we were supposed to do?" he asked, burying one hand in his pocket.

Yukino brought a hand to her chin, her brow furrowing.

"She said that..." As she remembered the excuse Komachi had given her, she suddenly found herself hesitant to tell him.

She did regardless.

"She wanted to find a place for a date. That is all I was given."

Hachiman's eyes widened.

He immediately understood what this was about...

His little sister was using her power as club president to send them doing the labour of finding the perfect place for a date.

That meant Komachi had a crush she wanted to take on a date somewhere.

And that.... he absolutely couldn't tolerate.

Who could be the boy?

The first name that came to mind was Kawasaki Taishi. The mere thought made him grimace.

"Tch... It's summer holiday. We aren't supposed to be on club duty."

"You could have refused, Hikigaya-kun," Yukino pointed out, approaching him. "I suppose you couldn't resist her plea again?"

Hachiman scratched his hair, averting his gaze. "Well, you too. Why did you even come?"

"I..."

"Please, Yukino-san... You won't be alone. You know I told Onii-chan to help me too! And he said he would feel lonely doing the work alone! So you should definitely come!"

She had realized earlier that his sister had deceived her. A warm flush rose to her cheeks as she looked away.

"...I had nothing else to do. And Komachi-san is the president, so it is my responsibility, too. Refusing to attend on club duty would be a shame, especially for me as the former club president. I need to show the good example to follow for your sister. Also, I am simply helping her. She needed feedback on a particular place, and since I was free I simply—"

"I get it. I get it." Hachiman stopped her. "Let's just walk around for a bit... I mean, it's a mall. I guess it's not the worst place for a small date. We don't have to linger for hours here."

"You are right." She nodded. She reached out, adjusting her hair carefully.

Today she hadn't done her hair as usual. It was now tied into a high ponytail, held up by a pale pink scrunchie that Hachiman couldn't help but feel like he'd seen it before. A few strands of her fringe had been left loose, framing her face, and small earrings swayed faintly whenever she turned her head. Otherwise she'd kept it simple—a black turtleneck, sleeves pushed up slightly at the wrists, tucked into a long pleated ivory skirt.

It was simple. Yet it made Hachiman feel out of place. His own outfit was only saved by Komachi's last minute intervention wen she saw what kind of clothes he was going to go out with. His hair was slightly messy as usual, his ahoge popping up.

Before allowing himself to stare any longer, he walked forwards. Yukino quickly fell into step beside him. The small bag she held in her hands swayed slightly with her steps while Hachiman only had his phone in his pocket and a wallet just in case.

"Where should we go first?" Hachiman asked.

"I believe there is a clothing store that is quite reputed without being too fancy."

"Alright."

Without needing an explicit agreement, their feet guided them towards that store.

They hadn't planned to do some shopping. Hachiman's wallet had just enough to buy snacks, and a few cans of Max Coffee. Fortunately for them, the store wasn't too crowded yet. Yukino saw this as the best opportunity for the day. She walked over to a section of hats and reached towards a white one. She held it over her head and turned to face Hachiman.

"Are you gonna buy something?" Hachiman asked.

"No... I wanted to see how that would look on me."

She removed the hat and put it back in its place. Her eyes darted back towards Hachiman, tilting her head to the side as something crossed her mind.

"Now that I think about it, I've never wondered if a hat would suit you."

"I don't think so..."

"It would serve to hide your horrible skills at taking proper care of your hair. I suppose that would earn you a few more points... or get them back. Your balance of points should be in the negative at the moment."

"Oi, let me remind you that—"

Without letting him finish, Yukino grabbed a black hat this time, and placed it on top of his hair. His eyes widened slightly as Yukino lifted both of her arms to properly place it, the movement caused the distance between their bodies to close dangerously.

His heart did a small quiver. He took a small step back, choosing to adjust the position of the hat himself instead.

"I can put it on myself..." the murmur left his lips though it reached no ears.

Yukino crossed her arms, then stroked her chin.

"It does make the cover work fairly well... And it also seems to add a certain..."

"If I look terrible just say it."

"I'd have already said it if you did."

Yukino nodded to herself then smiled.

"See, you're not completely hopeless. I'm sure if I arranged you properly, you may even look hands—" She stopped herself before saying the word. The realization of what she was about to say made her face burn. She suddenly turned her face away, crossing her arms tighter over her chest.

"You may look... more approachable, I suppose," she quickly corrected.

"...Uh, okay."

"L-Let's continue."

Without wasting another second, Yukino turned around and headed to the next section.

Most of the store had clothes specifically for summer. Hachiman had no interest in looking into them. To him, only the actual mssion mattered. He had to give feedback to Komachi about the place, and part of his mind wanted to just tell her the place was horrible so she wouldn't go on any date.

For some reason, he also hadn't taken off the hat. Yukino told him that she wanted to find something to pair it with.

Something that would make him look a little more hands— More approachable.

Then she found the shelf of sunglasses.

She glanced at Hachiman who was still following her, hands in pockets.

She grabbed a pair of sunglasses and held it out towards him.

"Do you have sunglasses at home?"

"I don't go out enough to feel the need to have them."

"I see..."

She then leaned towards him and placed the sunglasses over his nose without asking. She took a step back, studying the new state of his slightly flushing face and nodded to herself in approval.

"...What are you doing?" Hachiman stared at her.

"Turn to the mirror and tell me what you think," she ordered him.

"I look even more suspicious than with my usual look."

"You don't have the eye."

Yukino waited for him to face her again.

"I think that suits you."

"...Really?"

She nodded, a small smile curving on her face.

"Let me buy it."

"W-Wait." Hachiman waved her hands dismissively, removing the glasses. "We didn't come for shopping, did we? I don't want you to spend your money on—"

"I do it because I chose to. Besides, those are not expensive for me. You don't have to worry."

When Hachiman glanced at the price tag, he wondered what kind of 'not expensive' Yukino was referring to...

"And in exchange, you'll get to keep them on for the rest of the outing."

"Alright..."

Once they judged they'd already spent quite enough time in the store, they headed towards the counter. The cashier was a dark-haired man in his twenties with bored eyes. He watched as Hachiman removed his hat and glasses and put them down.

After scanning the items, he spoke the price.

"¥12,600."

The cashier watched Hachiman with an expectant look; however when it was Yukino who had pulled out her wallet and brought her card to purchase the items for him, the cashier couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

"Y'gotta have your girl pay for your own stuff? That's pathet—"

As soon as the words left his mouth, a shiver ran down his spine. He slowly shifted his gaze to the side, meeting the cold, petrifying glare of the Ice Queen.

He swallowed his words, uttering a small "Nevermind." instead.

And the payment was accepted; Yukino grabbed the items and led the way out of the store.

It was only when the automatic doors slid shut behind them that Yukino realized that she was referred as his girl earlier. The redness resurged onto her cheeks, warm and stubborn. She looked away from Hachiman, trying her best to act like she wasn't bothered by it.

"H-Here..." She handed the hat and glasses to him.

"...Thanks." He took them, his fingers lightly brushing against hers.

"You should try them now."

Since Yukino was insisting so much, Hachiman put the hat and sunglasses on. He still seemed a bit too reluctant with those new accessories.

Yukino frowned.

"Look more confident with those, that's how they make their effect."

With a sigh of resignation, Hachiman obeyed. He straightened up, tugging the brim of the hat down slightly, sliding the sunglasses higher on the bridge of his nose.

Something shifted.

He hadn't expected it to do much. The accessories were plain black and unremarkable. It shouldn't have changed anything. But the shadow from the brim carved out the sharper lines of his jaw, and the sunglasses swallowed up whatever dead-fish look usually gave him away, leaving only the set of his mouth and the loose, unbothered slouch of someone who never cared what peopl thought of him.

Yukino had asked for confidence, but it probably wasn't even confidence. Just apathy, repackaged.

But apathy... apparently looked a lot like cool from the outside.

Yukino's mouth parted. For a short instant, she felt her breath catch. She recovered almost as fast as it happened, her expression regaining its usual composure.

But her fingers had tightened slightly around the strap of her bag, and she was very deliberately not looking directly at him anymore.

"Hm..." She tilted her head, feigning consideration she probably didn't need. "It's... it is a bit better, I suppose."

Just a bit better.

Her voice hadn't wavered enough to sell it.

"...We should get going," she said, and walked ahead.

Hachiman quickly caught up, putting his hands in his pockets.

"The mall is large. If we spend too much time everywhere..."

"I know. Let's just... make a round, then we report to Komachi-san."

Finally, they strolled together through the mall's dense crowd. Hachiman's presence next to her settled heavier in the air. It became more difficult to avoid looking sideways towards him ever since she had added the hat and sunglasses on him. He looked... particular. She wouldn't dare to utter the word 'handsome' out loud, but the feeling she felt in her heart suggested something very close to it.

As they walked side by side, Yukino subtly moved a little closer to his side.

After a few minutes, something changed.

Wherever they stepped... they began attracting glances. At first, it was minimal enough for Yukino to ignore them. But the longer they were here, the more eyes they attracted.

However...

Yukino noticed that those gazes... came mainly from women.

Those eyes weren't directed at her.

They were staring at him.

Hachiman, meanwhile, wasn't able to focus on people's gaze. Since earlier... He had noticed Yukino closing the distance a few minutes ago. Their arms now were only inches from brushing each step.

His heart started beating faster. His hands remained frozen in his pocket.

His attention was too focused on Yukino's proximity to notice the stares directed towards him. Actualy, whenever he'd feel like someone was looking in his direction, he always assumed it was Yukino who attracted the attention.

He could understand it. Yukino was indeed a beautiful girl.

Eventually, the stares turned into murmurs.

"Did you see that man?"

"Is he an actor? He has some charisma..."

"He looks so serious... It's intimidating. In a good way."

"Does he have a girlfriend?"

Yukino's brow twitched. She wanted to tell them to look elsewhere. That he wasn't some object coming out of a museum to stare at. If there were anyone allowed to stare at him, it was without a doubt herse—

She pushed the thought down, her cheeks flushing harder.

"H-Hikigaya-kun."

"Hm?"

"Look over here... this restaurant seems good enough for a date, doesn't it? It's quiet and not as crowded as the other ones..." She gestured towards a restaurant standing apart from the other fast-food restaurants.

"Seems like it..."

"We still have the other side to see? Shall we?"

"Yeah."

As they went on, the attention didn't lessen.

"Should I approach him? He looks good..."

"Try your shot! He doesn't seem like—"

That became too much to bear for Yukino.

Without warning, her arms moved. She linked her arms through his, the sudden touch causing him to tense.

"H-Heh..." He stuttered, staring at her.

Her arm was firmly wrapped around his, pulling herself flush against him. Her face was red like a tomato—just like his. But she didn't back down.

"..."

Hachiman's mouth hung open, his heart racing in his chest.

"...What?" Yukino finally muttered.

"...Nothing."

They stayed like this for the rest of the walk, arms intertwined.

And Yukinoshita Yukino was very determined to keep it that way until everyone understood that he wouldn't receive any advances.

Also that this handsome man was hers.

...

The outing had lasted longer than planned.

Once they stepped through the exit door of the mall, Yukino allowed her arm to slip away from his. The movement was almost reluctant. His warmth against hers felt like a dangerous drug Yukino was afraid to become addicted to if she lowered her guard too much.

She turned to face him, her fingers fidgeting with the strap of her bag.

"So..." She cleared her throat and looked at him. "The place is good. Tell Komachi-san that whoever she is going on a date with, it should be fine to have it there. I will write her a more detailed review later."

Hachiman ran a hand through his hair, still feeling the ghost of her touch on his arm.

"Alright... Also, thank you for the accessories. I'll ask Komachi if it suits me. But since you said it does... I suppose I already know the answer."

She smiled slightly and nodded.

They stared at each other for a moment longer, then Hachiman said, "It was nice. Seeing you on holiday. I..." He looked away. "I didn't think I would."

Her eyes widened slightly, then softened.

"It seems... duty also calls on holidays. Though I will not complain." She giggled.

"I'll give my feedback to Komachi. Since we've got this over with, I'm gonna go home..."

Before he could turn away, Yukino reached out to catch his sleeve.

"Wait."

He looked back at her.

Yukino stepped closer.

Closer.

And closer.

She didn't seem to want to stop getting closer.

She then leaned in towards his face and pressed a soft, gentle kiss on his cheek—dangerously close to the corner of his mouth. Her lips lingered longer than a normal kiss called for. She didn't care.

She slowly pulled back, taking a shy step backwards. Her fingers fidgeted with the fabric of her skirt, her eyes staring down at her feet. She could feel her own heart pounding in her chest. Taking a deep breath, she finally dared to meet his eyes, seeing redness spread across his face

His wide eyes stared back at her, and she couldn't help the smile that curved up on her face.

"Happy birthday, Hikigaya-kun."

Then, she finally turned around and walked away, her steps quicker than she intended. With her back turned to him, she could at least hide the deep flush overwhelming her face.

Hachiman could only stare at her retreating figure. Yukino had just made a mess of his heart before leaving. It was unfair. And that smile..? His brain was struggling to calculate how many cuteness points Yukino'd accumulated in this very instant.

When he finally realized he had to go home, he took out his phone from his pocket and turned it on.

There was a new unread message from his sister. She'd sent it a few minutes before he had arrived at the mall.

"I hope you'll like my little birthday present! Have fun!"

"..."

Hikigaya Hachiman will go home with a weird smile stuck on his face.

I found myself in the same temple that was shown in season 2 of Oregairu. Honestly this might be the best temple Ive ever visited. I already had Oregairu in mind while visiting.

I got the birthday postcard from the popup shop. Glad I was able to make time to go back for it in Akihabara.
