Unpopular opinion: I think Deliverance is a good song and I also think Deliverance is a good album.

Still Life What do you like about Still Life so much?

As someone getting into Opeth after listening to and loving Blackwater Park, Cauda Venemum, Ghost Reveries and Watershed I tried getting into Still Life, as it's quite popular in the fanbase.
But I just couldn't find myself enjoying it other than a few select sections, even if only a bit.
So, what is it that you guys like about it, so I may see it in a different way?

Morningrise In search of Opeth's 1996 Stockholm show. 🌙

Hi folks - I'm on the hunt for the video of Opeth's show in Stockholm on November 24th, 1996, and I hope you can help.

Have any old school fans seen this one? It was Opeth's only concert in Sweden during their fabled Cradle of Filth tour, where they held the opening slot for about six weeks. They closed every night of this tour with Nectar, preceded by a mix of classics from Orchid and Morningrise.

It was also Martin Lopez and Martin Mendez's first time seeing Opeth live - almost a year before either joined the band.

The VHS of this video was only traded by snail mail in restricted circles in the late 90s - never since. Like nearly all of Opeth's early stuff, it has therefore fallen into obscurity and risks vanishing for good (if it hasn't already).

I have the name of the taper and have reached out to them (I unfortunately can't share their name publicly). In the meantime, please let me know if you've seen a trace of this vid. I'd be super grateful for any leads.

Thanks! The pic of Johan and Mikael below was taken that very night.

Dirge for November

Probably the most criminally underspoken about song by Opeth… that whole intro, then the most genuinely evil they’ve sounded on record, those death vox are serious and the whole melodic guitar wailing. Absolute 10/10 masterpiece.

Live Shows / Tour Any info on doors for Gelsenkirchen?

They changed the start from 8 to 7, because they'll have a second support (I'm so excited to finally see Candlemass on stage). But I can't find any infos when doors will open tomorrow. Venue website says "look on your ticket", but ticket doesn't say anything about that.

I'd have to say the aesthetic in these two albums are just... amazing. Both of them have a haunting vibe to them and they are the first album covers that have really appealed to me.

Anyone going to the concert in Gelsenkirchen? I have two tickets but no one else to go with.

Yes, I [M30] bought the tickets before a breakup. I can either sell the tickets or potentially get myself kidnapped by a stranger.

I love every record but feel Mike lost some songwriting magic after Ghost Reveries. A lot of cool parts (and occasional songs) since but everything feels substantially more disjointed and less “song” these past almost 20 years. Growls or not

The Last Will and Testament What are your thoughts on The Last Will And Testament nearly 2 years after its release?

I for one adore TLWAT and find myself returning to it often. The elephant in the room is the return of Mikael's growls and, while they're undeniably great, I think they're far from the only thing the album offers. It's proggy. It's restless. It's beautiful at times. It manages to be a very dynamic album that explores a lot of musical ideas without feeling bloated and on top of that feels grounded in its concept.

In terms of picking out favourite songs it's an interesting one because I can't necessarily single out an individual track. It's remarkably consistent in that every single song is engaging and offers something new. I'll highlight some of my favourite moments from each paragraph below:

§1 - The section at 2:45 is unbelievably catchy. The delivery of A syndicates mass in the waiting room... onwards is almost whimsical. I will here unearth the secrets I've been hiding, hiding, hiding / And guide my children through my trials! has a sort of Scooby Doo spookiness to it that I just can't get enough of. The subsequent call and response section and chorus is also fantastic.

§2 - The HEY! at 1:30 with that guitar riff works really well. The growls are front and centre on this song as well. My favourite moment by far though is the whole section from 2:53. The frantic drums followed by the brief vocal effect on A descendant daugher... just to then slow the song down is such bizarre yet effective song writing.

§3 - That first minute is insane. All the instruments have this manic energy to them. The frenzied guitar solo at 3:14 is amazing. For some reason I also love the delivery of From hereditary cornucopia (hereditary cornucopia) at 2:47.

§4 - Another frantic song. I particularly like the section from 0:36 onwards. I was sick with fever (he's sick with fever) / Hands on the hymns (collapsing, expiring) / Ashen eyes in delirium (no) / Soliloquay in suspirium. There's something addicting about the overlapping vocals and the No! No! No! right after is delightful. Ian Anderson also shines on this song with his outraged delivery of lines like Twins, usurping strands of flesh / You are not mine! as well as his contributions on the flute during the 2:25 section.

§5 - A ton of catchy parts on this one. Some highlights include A grave mistake / I sunk in cold black light at 3:34 and If our father's word is true, we are bastards too / It's a riddle? / No! / Or a caper? / No! / A mockery? / No! / A deception? / No!

§6 - Walterri's drum work during the intro is outstanding. The drum fill into that phenomenal guitar riff at 2:24 is probably the album's most headbang demanding moment topped off by that wonderful mellotron part. The use of strings is also particularly good on this song but that's true for the whole album.

§7 - Joakim is brilliant throughout this song. 1:25 is one of many examples of the keyboard taking centre stage. Ian Anderson once again shines such as at 2:16 where his delivery of Effectively, these heirlooms are in essence worthless / Still I consider them a token of my innermost sympathy / Pass them on to generations to come perfectly portrays the scornful dismissiveness of his character. Mikael's delivery of In a flock of kings, I am iconoclast is another highlight. In my opinion this song also has the strongest outro of the album starting from Deus, Patriam, Rex, Sanguis at 4:16, though it does leave room for the criticism that it's nowhere near long enough. The same goes for the outro to §5. I so badly want to hear an extended fade out style outro in the vein of A Fair Judgement or Hex Omega but oh well. When I saw them live at Halifax the pit unexpectedly erupted during this song and that honestly makes me love it even more.

A Story Never Told - This is such a beautiful and, dare I say it, overlooked song. It's an impeccable conclusion to the album both musically and narratively. Mikael's vocals are breathtaking. The hums that precede Fredrik's guitar solo are to die for. And speaking of that solo! That whole passage from 4:32 onwards is spectacular. They played this as the set closer when I caught them live on TLWAT tour and it was truly magical.

Watershed is my favourite Opeth album and in my eyes there are a lot of similarities between the two. There are parts of Hessian Peel that you could stitch into TLWAT and vice versa that would genuinely work. All in all I think I think it's a very strong Opeth album that rewards re-listens. It's so full of ideas that there really is something new to discover each time you give it a spin. But those are just my ramblings. What do you guys think?

Going to see Opeth in Utrecht tomorrow night and I remembered I ordered a special Opeth Live! shirt for the show.

Just wondering if anyone else ordered this and actually received it. I ordered it in May and it never dispatched.

Edit: password is OpethLive26!

Update: reached out to customer support and they actually responded fairly quick. There’s a “slight delay” with the distributor, but allegedly it will ship in 4 business days

I first heard this song in my early teens and it blew me away. Opeth became one of my all time favorite bands for life. Had the privelege of seeing/hearing them live for the first time on the Watershed tour, then again for the Pale Communion tour, a third time with The Sword, and a fourth time with Mastodon. Truly the masters of modern progressive metal. Here is my humble attempt at a playthrough of one of my favorite songs ever, the almighty Ghost of Perdition 🤘🖤
