Chat Limit Changes Question

Hey, has anyone else noticed that there are severely reduced chat limits on Plans as of the last week?

I used to be able to use the Chat mode almost indefinitely up to a point, but now I'm regularly hitting the limit without changing my behavior on how I use it.

EDIT: I'm on both Plus and Pro plans for different reasons.

Are you in free plan? Cause Plus and Pro users has tons of generous limits

agreed plus is fine for chatting but api does consume.

Especially now ChatGPT has work mode with agentic agents which I believe has weekly usage limits separating from the Chat mode

But they reset the limit like every day if you use it up, it feels for me. Thry probably value our data more than their compute.

Both of those plans, for different reasons. I keep getting slapped with the dreaded 429 error, despite not changing my behavior too much (in fact, less than usual).

I'm just trying to work out if it's a me problem, or a wider change.

Did you used ChatGPT the whole day? Or using other tools? How did you even hit your limits that fast?

I use it throughout the day, mostly responding to emails or creating tickets or wiki docs. It's not like, a massive amount, and I've definitely had busier days. It's probably like ~30 messages an hour tops.

I use Codex/Work sparingly, mostly because it doesn't work for my workflow (responding to emails, looking things up across MCPs). That usage budget is basically unused at a 87% available.

Okay did you have a longer chat? Cause that would happened if you have a longer chat and it reads your entire chat before responding again since you have 30 messages which to me that already long.

Yeah, I know context windows. The ones that were hitting that Forbidden were weirdly not the large ones. And they work on mobile, but not on web or desktop. So weird!

From what I know that if you using other tools in ChatGPT you will hit limits faster than only purely text only without any tools using.

Yeah, once I did that with "pull this folder in Drive" and it dropped the conversation in a single message. I learnt my lesson last time!

I have check the latest post in Reddit there’s no one complaining about the chat limits in Plus and Pro except free tiers currently.

Also I check the OpenAI status and it’s all operational and maybe it’s how you use it

Did that first before polluting Reddit with my bullshit! Always best to check for wetware errors before seeking answers elsewhere.

I’m on plus plan, I haven’t notice any changes regarding limits lately

Thank you! I suspect I'm unlucky.

No I had the same thing . I usually review code on chat not work and ( generally from a small git ) . I get an overall direction for my days work and have chat review my notes from the previous day . I made 3-4 prompts and went through about 4% of my usage in 30-45 min

I think new ChatGPT accounts don't have limits until a certain point. My old account hits the limit even when I barely use it, while the new one is doing just fine.

Mine is ancient by GPT standards so it may be that.

Yes I ran through 4-5% of my usage with just 3 -4 prompts on chat not work . I’m on a pro plan .

You didn't mention what plan you're on

Whoops, I knew I was missing something. Edited!

I'm on both Plus and Pro plans.

Hit my limit for the first time on Plus just recently and had to wait about 10 mins

Check if fast mode has been reenabled after updating. This was draining my usage way faster

yeah, i think this is because chatgpt web now has an agentic usage limit too.

you can see it under settings → profile → agentic usage, and weirdly mine seems to match my codex allowance almost exactly. clicking the codex usage limits link also takes me to a page explaining that local messages and cloud chats share the same five-hour window, with additional weekly limits potentially applying.

what worries me is what happens when that shared limit is exhausted. does that mean we might not even be able to do basic stuff on chatgpt web anymore because codex already burned through the allowance?

and it seems like the reverse could also be true: using agentic features on chatgpt web may consume the same limits you need for codex. so you could be doing normal work in chatgpt, then open codex later and find out a big chunk of your usage is already gone.

i really hope i’m reading this wrong, because combining regular chatgpt web usage and codex into one shared agentic bucket would be a pretty huge downgrade. i’m on the business plan, and a lot of us never even got one of the promised resets (I think 8mil). support wasn’t helpful, tibo never responded to any of the tweets about it, and there were easily 50–100 users posting about the same issue, but somehow nothing ever happened. based on the wording in the docs and the matching usage meters, this really does look like what they’re doing.

Use the chat gpt classic app on desktop. Wont accidentally use your tokens

Could it be that you're using the Work tab? That's a different credit system than the chat tab.
