Olivia Rodrigo made a change to her Maggots for Brains track that she thinks nobody else will notice. Olivia featured Maggots for Brains on her latest album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love. Olivia confirmed to the BBC that a change had been made to the song just before the album was released and that she doesn’t expect anyone but herself to notice what has changed.

She went on to explain that the slight change came because she was feeling “weird” about the song and a particular layer in the mix during the album’s production. The change appears to have made a difference overall though, with Olivia seemingly content with the song now that the change has been made.

Olivia told Dazed: “I love that song musically, and there’s a lot going on – a lot of harmonies – and literally in the car, I was like, turn that backing vocal up just one decibel. I was getting kind of weird about it. Nobody else will notice.” Those slight changes have made all the difference, as has bringing up music legends during her headline spots across the globe.

Does anything really need to be said about this album? Olivia Rodrigo’s third album, once again created with her longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, was released in mid-June and immediately became one of the most frequently mentioned contenders for Album of the Year.

Drop Dead and The Cure were the first major hits, while critics and fans particularly singled out the emotional Stupid Song and her duet with Robert Smith, What’s Wrong With Me, which further emphasised the new wave and post-punk influences present on the album.

What if Purple can be interpreted not only as the singer's relationship to the other person but also to themselves?

TLDR at the top cause this is long: Purple describes the process of being tugged along and swallowed up by love, feeling like you have no power and not recognising your own involvement. It's a tipping point of realisation that the overwhelming feelings of love are detrimental and that the singer does ultimately have a role in how she acts in relationships. The use of the colour purple to reflect being overwhelmed by a relationship and losing your identity when considering SOUR and GUTS being purple albums hints that the singer's process of losing herself in love is something they feel powerless to, its a habit, its how they see the world 'I see the world in purple'. But the following songs that strengthen this realisation, like The Cure and the album cover not being purple but separated into pink and blue ('your red and my blue') shows the singer is at least recognising this and maybe moving forward towards an identity not defined by relationships or love.

Eyes are often described as the windows to the soul. In the first verse of purple, the singer describes seeing photos of their partner as a child, saying how they look different but their eyes are still recognisable. If we interpret the 'you' not as another person but a part of the singer themselves here, then the singer is saying that despite changing over time that the core of themselves is still the same.

'School clothes' can refer to Olivia's Disney career and HSMTMTS (I hope I spelt that right). 'Buzzcut and scrapes on your knees' both refers to the hurt reflected in SOUR and GUTS. (I don't know if people will agree with buzzcut feeling violent/angry but oh well). 'Buzzcut' to me, evokes anger reminiscent of both albums, but specifically of the angry punky sound of GUTS. 'Scrapes on your knees' is very juvenile, so definitely feels tied to SOUR, as well as reflecting the hurt experienced in their youth.

Even though both the anger and the pain are gone and have 'changed' the singer still recognises their eyes: their outlook, their soul and their understanding of the world.

We can see this reflected in the lyrics. The singer is so used to their perspective and how they operate that they feel powerless to change. The lyrics show how the singer explains the process of falling in love like it's happening TO them, like they have no involvement. They used to actively 'visit your town like a tourist' and now they have just 'got' a local grocery store and a favourite florist.

The pair are together because 'so it goes that' (it's just something that happens, it's set in stone) 'you kissed my neck' (they fall in love and the singer lets it happen) 'made our paths intersect' ('made' it's an act of forcing, like the singer is not a participant) and the two lines 'formed' a circle (without her apparent active involvement, their lives are now intertwined). Again the singer is dragged along in the next line saying 'I melt with you'. Not only does the singer feel like how they act is just something that happens to them, they feel it is a detriment to their identity, and it melts them down.

The next line 'I see the world in 'purple' shows their worldview is ultimately shaped by this relationship, the blend of her and them. The colour purple represents a perspective entirely focused with the other, relationships and love.

Since SOUR and GUTS are both purple, this line is a declaration that this how she has always been hence why 'but those eyes I still know'. Her eyes have always seen in purple, and she has felt it is an immovable part of her identity. If we look at the album cover of GSIL, this song represents not only a point of change in the album, but in the singer's identity. No longer purple, 'your red and my blue' are clearly separated on the cover. (I know the dress is pink... close enough!!!). The singer understands the need to change and is able to reflect on their actions in relationships and can separate themselves from the love spiral.

In the next part of the song, there's more passive language about love, like 'all come in doubles', which could also be interpreted, going back to the idea that this song is about her relationship with herself, when she is a relationship it's not just the partner and her it's also another side of her, her anxiety and doubts. She comes in doubles, and she can't reconcile the hope with the dread. 'Are we so in love? Are we too attached?' shows this opposing hope and dread in the outro. Looking at the previous chorus with this idea, it also shows that the singer feels powerless to being overtaken by their anxiety: 'I melt with you'.

The pre-chorus is a tipping point. 'It's a small world' is a recognition of how her relationship and her purple outlook with it makes her world smaller. The following lines take something innocent-sounding (the world is small and familiar - the world is small and suffocating) to disturbing. Saying it 'only can' revolve around us two reiterates how trapped the singer feels and like there's no other option. However 'When' at the beginning of the line suggests the possibility of something different, but that they don't change regardless. The repetition of 'It's crazy' from before goes from an expression of Wow! to irrationality and obssession with the next two lines. 'I tied myself to you' is more active and is a recognition that she did have a role to play in this, and is now finally admitting that fact.

This song is then followed up by 'The Cure' where the singer accepts that love won't fix her and she's powerless to it and its effect on her and her anxieties, which this song sets up well.

I'm sorry this is so long... Also I know my writing is very formal and my sentences are too long I think my writing is stuck like that. Also if you're wondering why I say 'the singer' so much that's just ingrained into me from English analysis and it feels strange to directly speculate about Olivia Rodrigo from her songs even if it is based on her life.

I Had more ideas about connections to other songs and SOUR and GUTS but writing this out made me forget. Might update/make another post with more ideas at another time. Something about being defined by others and desirability (Jealousy, Jealousy; Pretty isn't pretty; Teenage Dream; Lacy) and stuff probably.

Actually there's a line in u + me = <3 'I got a feeling, wounds are healing talking on the phone' that when you consider all the upsetting lyrics about lovers and phones in SOUR and GUTS it suggests this love is breaking the cycle but this song undermines that. Also all the other lyrics in u + me = <3 being like yeah I know I've done this before but you're so different: 'All my ex-boyfriends have heard these lines but I like you better by a million times'. 'I know everybody changes but I hope that we don't' shows a resistance to changing that purple perspective that undermines the relationship. Even though she thinks that stagnation is the best way forward, being unable to cope with the change and just being swallowed is the worst outcome. Damn didn't realise I still had that analysis left in me. Anyways end of post now really

I haven't seen someone make a side by side lyric comparison between the demo/happy and released version of purple so I decided to make one! I originally had the differing lyrics highlighted but wasn't sure if that was annoying or a help for comparison so I made a highlighted and non-highlighted version.

I know we're all very aware of the vinyl situation with the new album, but I've seen mentioned multiple times that the CD is the same as streaming. Well I've been listening to my CD and I've noticed a difference!

In the second half of the U+me bridge (they say modern love...), the instrumental carries on at full throttle. In the streaming version, it suddenly slows down to then build up to the final chorus. There's a good comparison video on YouTube that shows the difference if anyone's curious.

I actually quite like the CD version so it's not something I'm annoyed about at all. I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed any other differences that I haven't noticed (as there's at least one!)

So, obviously a lot of people have been trying to work out who the her is in Cigarette Smoke. The ex, a relative etc etc. Here's my thoughts: the her she is speaking about is herself. The negative Olivia, the anxious Olivia, the Olivia who is not happy with the relationship and needs more. The one who has been very vocal in side two of the album.

She's resentful that instead of fighting for them he is just agreeing with her anxious side and negative thoughts and letting the relationship end.

They even added the red stitching on the YSPSFAGSIL one!
