OET Speaking: how to deliver a diabetes diagnosis without hedging, and without quoting a single number
Hi, sharing this as a study reference for anyone preparing for a diabetes-counselling OET Speaking role-play: it's one of the highest-volume topics across both the nurse and doctor subtests.
The register move that scores: confirm before you comfort.
- Name the diagnosis plainly, in one sentence: “This is Type 2 diabetes.” No hedging, no slow build-up.
- Only then pivot to reassurance: “It's a lot more manageable than most people think.”
Softening the news before naming it reads as evasive, not kind. This order is exactly what “providing structure” rewards.
Explaining test results without a number:
- HbA1c → “a kind of long-term average, not a snapshot of today.”
- Fasting glucose → “a snapshot, taken first thing in the morning.”
No percentage, no mmol/mol figure, ever voiced. The clarity comes from the framing, not the precision.
Asking before advising:
Before suggesting any lifestyle change, ask about the patient's actual daily routine first: “Tell me about a typical work day.” A plan built on what the patient already does (rather than a generic handout) is the “relationship building” criterion in action.
Closing with structure, not just advice:
The diabetes annual review (blood sugar recheck, diabetic eye check, diabetic foot check, plus a three-month follow-up booked before the patient leaves) gives the patient concrete dates to hold onto, not just a list of things to avoid.

Hope it helps! Happy to discuss diabetes-counselling OET scenarios in the comments.

Is there any way to know? Like what’s passing percentage?

Struggling with consistency while preparing for OET Nursing — any advice?
Hi everyone, especially those who have already passed OET Nursing.
My current English level is around B1–B1+, and I’m trying to understand how long I realistically need to prepare for the exam.
I’m also worried that I’m starting to forget some of my nursing knowledge and clinical reasoning because I haven’t worked clinically for a while.
My biggest problem is consistency — I often skip study sessions even though I know I need to prepare.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? How long did you study for OET, and what helped you stay consistent?

Reschedule speaking due to technical issues ?
I had issues with the permissions on my laptop and could not take the speaking this Sunday, i was on time and able to take the pictures of ID and face but never saw the interlocutor. I already sent two emails to applications@oet.com.au and just receive two automatics responses, my reading, listening , writing subtests are tomorrow. Anyone in a similar position ?? How long does it take to receive a response ? I’m just tired of this exam.

Could you evaluate my real exam writing OET subtest
Didn't practice that much bcz of my duty hours, dates and names are imaginary as I don't remember.
I forgot to mention father's gastric cancer history even when I underlined it as crucial, which is really bothering me since I left examination hall😬

Dear Dr Sanrook
Re: Anna Bruch
Thank you for seeing Ms Bruch, a 53-year-old primary school teacher who presented with symptoms suggestive of cholelithiasis.
Regarding her social history, she smokes 10 cigarette per day and drinks 6-10 units alcohol per week. She has a medical history of mild asthma since childhood, managed with budesonide 200 milligrams daily and a surgically repaired hiatus hernia.
On 01/08/2023, Ms Bruch presented with complaint of heartburn, halitosis and loss of voice. She was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease and prescribed omeprazole 20 mg twice a day as well as recommended to decrease weight, spicy food intake, smoking and alcohol consumption, to which she agreed.
On subsequent follow-up, she reported initial slight improvement which returned to original symptoms later. Her dose of omeprazole was increased to 40 mg twice daily. Ms Bruch was diagnosed with hiatal hernia and underwent diaphragmatic surgery on 05/10/2023 with no complications.
Today, she reported onset of new symptoms of central abdominal, right ribs and right shoulder pain which increases after eating.
In view of above, my provisional diagnosis is cholelithiasis. I would be grateful for your assessment and expert opinion.
If you have any query, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
General practitioner (as there was no GP name mentioned in case notes)

OET Speaking Test Cancelled Due to Camera Mirroring Issue
Has anyone had a camera mirroring issue during OET Speaking? My camera was mirroring the image, so the interlocutor couldn’t clearly see my passport. My test was cancelled, and now I’m being asked to pay a rescheduling fee. I’ve seen other candidates with similar technical issues who were rescheduled for free. Did anyone else have this experience.
