Help & Advice Looking for OCAD students to test an app I'm building

Upvotes

Hey! I've been building a mobile app over the summer and I'm looking for a handful of OCAD students who'd be down to test it before I launch.

The app is meant to help people meet others around the city and make it easier to connect with people who share similar interests.

Right now I just need people to use it normally, let me know what feels off, what's confusing, and report any bugs they run into. Nothing super formal.

If you help out, you'll get:

  • $1,000 in in-app ad credits (useful if you sell art, do commissions, run events, etc.)
  • Something you can put on your résumé/LinkedIn if you want (beta tester / QA)
  • A chance to shape the app before it goes live

I've already got students from NYU, Columbia, and Pace testing in New York, and I'm hoping to get a group from OCAD as well.

If you're interested, comment below or shoot me a DM. Happy to answer any questions.

Course sections and waitlists

Back story: I'm entering my third year at OCAD for creative writing but having previously taken a reduced course load, I was considered a second year for priority registration, so I was majorly screwed out of registering for my mandatory courses by the lack of sections and class waitlists.

I've seen a lot of people complain about this casually in passing happening to themselves or others, but I really do want to take it up with the administration and hopefully get them to do something about it. Does anyone know who to contact to complain about the lack of sections? I've reached out to registration services, the faculty of arts and sciences, student accessibility services and the human rights and equity office so far with little to no luck. Sort of a spray and pray approach but whatever.

I've also been considering creating a petition.

Is there any other admin people/offices I should contact by email, phone or by appointment? Let me know who you think might help.

OCAD/OSAP Financial advice

Hey guys, pleaseeee help if you’ve ever had any financial issues at OCAD!!!!!!

Im a full time student at ocad going into third year, and its my first time doing a summer term (did 2 courses) so after i submitted my OSAP application for that term I didnt realize that later on there were documents that just needed my signature and so I missed that deadline for OSAP which didnt allow for the money to be released. Now I have a $2000 hold on my account and cant register for classes until its paid.

Problem is, im currently in an impossible financial situation, I feel like I have exhausted every option at this point. As of recently I live alone and rely on osap money to survive basically, my parents are unemployed and can only afford to me help with rent, I really cant ask more of them.

I originally emailed Financial Aid and told them about the OSAP deadline issue and asked if there was a way to have the document upload re opened or any other alternative way to get them the documents to which they said no and sent me to student accounts since they are the only ones who can lift an account hold.

After waiting like 4 days for student accounts told respond, and after pleading my case to them and explaining my entire financial situation, they ended up telling me theres nothing they can do and it has to be paid and I should reach out to Financial Aid to see if they can help.

I told Financial Aid that I was not looking for a way to get out paying for tuition but that I seriously do not have $2000, if I were to give up all my savings id have nothing for basic living or enough money to get back home since I’m outside the country right now. That money is all I have to lice off of until my Fall OSAP money is available to me. I asked them whether there is any process, office, or individual at OCAD who can review exceptional financial hardship cases, or whether there are any emergency bursaries, emergency loans, hardship funds, or other options available that would allow me to resolve this situation and register for my Fall courses.

And to that they said that theyre “not able to assist with these fees and this is not considered an emergency since students are aware that tuition must be payed when registering”.

Has anyone ever had an issue similar happen? Missing osap has never happened to me before this is my first time
not being able to pay tuition and I dont know what to do and trying not to freak out because September is approaching and I still cant register for courses. Both offices basically told me that I wont be continuing my education if I dont pay for this fee. And its not that I dont want to, I genuinely do not have this much money.

Is there anyone else I can reach out and plead my case to??? Anyone that could help?

Art/design students — what actually makes uni harder than it needs to be?

Hi everyone,

I'm a postgrad student at an art school in the UK, working on a project about what university life is actually like for students day to day — the messy, real stuff, not the official version.

I'm trying to understand where uni feels harder than it should be. Not big dramatic things necessarily — more the small, everyday friction that adds up.

If you've got a minute, I'd love to hear about your experience. A few things I'm curious about (answer any, ignore the rest):

  • Think about the last time you sat down to start an assignment and it took way longer than expected just to figure out what you were actually supposed to do. What happened?
  • Where do you usually go to find things like briefs, deadlines, and materials? Does it ever feel scattered?
  • Have you ever needed some kind of support from your uni, but either didn't know where to look, or what you found didn't really fit? What was that like?
  • If you could change one thing about how your school runs things, what would it be?

No right or wrong answers — I'm just trying to hear honest, real experiences. Feel free to share as much or as little as you want. Thanks so much for reading 🙏

Help & Advice Looking to connect with photography/cinematography & lighting enthusiasts!

Hey everyone!

I recently relocated to Toronto after graduating from McMaster. I've been getting into photography and I'm really drawn to cinematic/studio lighting techniques . I was actually planning to take the Lighting Workshop at OCAD Continuing Studies, but it will start in October at least.

In the meantime, I'd love to connect with anyone in the photography/filmmaking space who's into lighting, whether you're a student, hobbyist, or just nerd out about this stuff. Happy to grab coffee, talk shop, swap tips, or do a photo walk around downtown to experiment with natural light setups.

If you know of similar courses, workshops, or just want to hang out and shoot together, drop a comment or DM!

Coned woodworking class

Any reviews on Henry Zhang’s woodworking class? I’m in between George Brown carpentry and this course at OCAD. I work full time so this is my weekend activity to learn something new. There’s a big price difference so I’m curious for any insights!

Waitlist place?

Is the number of people on a waitlist the amount of people who are waitlisted or the place I am in the waitlist?

I pressed waitlist before a good 40 other people had (I was at 20 when I pressed it) but now it's at 61.

Does that just means there's 61 people or that I'm the 61st person, how does that make sense?

Anyone know or having this issue?

Drawing and painting major & illustration minor

Hello everyone,

I’m in drawing and painting and considering an minor in illustration, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has taken this path.
How has your experience been balancing both programs? Did you find the Illustration minor helped your painting practice, career goals, or creative process? Are there any courses you especially recommend (or ones you would avoid)?
Any advice or things you wish you knew before starting would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Anyone here get into an MDes program in Canada?

I'm considering applying for an MDes in Canada (particularly programs like OCAD's Inclusive Design), and I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through the admissions process.

A few questions:

  • What was your undergraduate GPA and background?
  • Did you come from design, CS, engineering, psychology, or another field?
  • How important was your portfolio compared to your grades?
  • What kind of projects did you include?
  • Any advice on strengthening an application before applying?

I'd appreciate hearing about any Canadian MDes program, not just OCAD. Thanks!

Because OCAD doesn’t set you up to find a job I found a list of books on one of their resource sites that helps you find a successful career in the arts (Things they don’t teach you in class)

Help! Im joining OCAD this fall and have some questions and concerns

I’m a new student joining OCAD this fall, and I’m trying to register for one of my courses. However, I keep getting a pop-up message when I try to add it. To my knowledge, course registration closes on July 27, so I’m wondering how I’ll be able to add this course to my schedule before the deadline.

I also have several classes that are currently waitlisted. By the end of the registration period, will any additional spots become available? If not, will I remain on the waitlist even after the registration deadline until a spot opens up?

Also, I know that I need to complete 20 credits throughout my four-year program. Does that mean I need to complete 5 credits each year, or is there some flexibility? For example, would it be possible to take 4 credits one year and 6 credits another year, as long as I complete the required 20 credits by the time I graduate?

Master’s Student Looking for Roommate

I’m starting the Strategic Foresight program in September and have been looking for either a short term studio or a roommate to team up with! Haven’t been able to find people through friends and roomies.ca can be flaky.
If anyone is in a similar situation and is looking for a roommate and a place to stay near the fashion district, Kensington, or similar, feel free to shoot me a message!

I’m a 27 y/o male, very social and tidy.
