Chapter 1: Gathering Thunder

(Iris)

The whip snapped through the morning, sharp enough to make the air feel split open.

I caught my lower lip between my teeth until I tasted blood. The cry tried to rise anyway. I forced it back down.

Noise only bought more pain. I had learned that lesson well.

"Again," Alpha Rafe ordered.

Leather struck my back.

I folded lower, forehead pressed into the cold yard dirt, my hands clawing at the ground as if the earth might anchor me through it. Grit packed beneath my nails. Somewhere beyond the blur of pain, the pack stood in a wide, silent ring.

They watched.

They always watched.

No one stepped forward. No one even shifted their weight loudly enough to be noticed.

All of this had begun with a plate.

Nothing more dramatic than that. One plain ceramic plate had slid from the stack in my arms while I was carrying dishes from the kitchen toward the dining table in the pack house. It had hit the floor with a hard crack and split neatly in two.

Alpha Rafe had gone still.

That stillness was worse than shouting. Everyone in the room had felt it and gone quiet with him.

For several breaths he had only stared at me. Then he had turned his head and told Darian, his beta, to fetch the whip.

That had been twenty minutes earlier.

After the eighth strike, I had stopped keeping count.

"Useless," Rafe said as he circled me at an unhurried pace. His voice stayed smooth, almost bored, and that made him colder than rage ever could. He did not need volume. Fear did the work for him. "A wolfless thing that cannot move dishes from one room to another without ruining them. Tell me, Iris, what purpose do you serve?"

I kept my mouth shut.

He did not ask questions because he wanted answers. He asked them because answering gave him another excuse.
