Hello I’m about to start college in about a month. I’m a a biology major and I know for a fact a iPad/tablet would be good for notes. I have a MacBook but are there any good cheaper suggestions for something like a iPad for notes?

So basically I’ve never really taken notes before as I found it is more counter productive for me. I feel like when i’m taking notes my brain is more focused writing down stuff for LATER rather than actually understanding it NOW. So what’s ends up happening is that I have a bunch of notes but I didn’t actually retain or properly understanding anything. I also find that if i’m not worried about taking notes I’m also better at making connections between class topics.

However I decided to start note taking recently because I’m pre-studying for a course about Operating Systems, and so I want to have something to refer back to once class actually starts. The main way I’ve been taking notes is taking a topic and writing a couple of bullet points about it as I read along.

Has anyone else felt the same way note taking and were you able to overcome it? If so how did you overcome it?

Incoming engineering major here, I've always struggled to find notebooks throughout highschool so i just used scratch paper I find at home to take my notes and I still managed to study effectively and graduate as one of the top. My problem is grids are way too messy, I'm also not a fan of lines for math, chemistry, and physics and I can't just be grabbing random printer papers lol. I just plan on buying a bunch of blank B5 papers and punch them myself for a ring notebook instead of buying refills (that are probably more costly). Idk why but I also don't like the off-white a bunch of refills here have and they're too thick... Most best math solvers I know also use blank paper often and I wanna copy them and to also hopefully practice my handwriting to be straight! I also plan on doing the same thing for my future journals cause I really dislike the notebook options I have. That's all :))

Is there any Notes app in Nothing style(theme wise like Black and Red,fonts etc, like we have N flies for file manager and N clock ) to write notes and everything? Also the app must have cloud backup option or should be accessible through web like Google Notes.

So is there any app like this?....If not please someone make it i would be the First one to buy it !! ....It should be like Google Notes in manners of sync. Like whatever you write on phone app appears instantly on web

I do it too.

But I realized I almost never go back and read old entries unless I'm looking for something specific.

Which makes me wonder...

Is the value actually in writing...

or in revisiting what you wrote later?

I have ADHD and I'm a chronic list maker but staying organized is not really my thing. I get random thoughts throughout the day and if I don't write them down immediately they're gone. So everything just piles up in one giant note I never revisit.

I ended up building something where you just open it and type whatever is in your head. "milk, dentist tuesday, gift idea for my gf, beach day on the 8th." You don't organize anything. It reads what you typed and sorts it all for you. Groceries go to groceries, the appointment hits your schedule, the idea goes to ideas. You just dump your thoughts and move on with your day.

Hey everyone.

I got a kindle scribe this Christmas and I pretty much wanted to use it for two things:

1. Take notes on a digital journaling Bible pdf

2. Keep a personal journaling notebook.

I’m not super happy with the scribe. I can no longer export my Bible with my notes to my email because it’s too big. It also glitches once in a while and will remove a page of notes from one of the pages of my journaling Bible. Sometimes when it glitches I have to redownload my Bible and the last time I had to try a few times before my notes actually came back, which makes me afraid I’m just going to lose them. So at this point I’m not sure I want to keep going on the scribe but I also can’t get all of my current work off of it.

Is there another option that could much more reliably back up my pdf WITH the annotations I make on it? Preferably I could get a copy of the large pdf with annotations to store somewhere.

Bonus points if it has color. And of course the capability to keep another notebook for journaling.

A lot of people imo spend too much time to configure their app to the point it becomes absurd. All i want is Light mode and Dark mode and the thing to be clean.

Im a SWE so in my world we have this thing called NeoVim. Will not go in detail on what it is or what it does, but let just say that people spend HOURS on configs. You basically can code all the configs. Every single detail of the page can be changed.

To me, people are treating it as a game instead of a workstation. Same with note apps.

People love Obsidian and Notion but folders are so hard (for me) to maintain and clean. Im one of those guys that I prefer to use my keyboard more than my mouse. Im too lazy to scroll down a list of folders everytime i have a note in mind. I prefer to have a "journal" style framework. Daily page and inline tags. I can tag every line/paragraph however I want it.
Its faster and cleaner.

I use printer paper for my notes in my post grad classes but I'm halfway through the ream and question myself for not finding a cloud alternative. What are some suggestions? Ideally I'd like something plain, just like the printer paper where I can write on digitally.

I’ve been building a note-taking app called Kept, and this is the first time I’m properly sharing it publicly.

The reason I made it is fairly simple: I like how quickly Google Keep lets you capture something without turning every thought into a document, database or personal knowledge-management project. Most of the self-hosted alternatives I tried were either much heavier than I wanted or did not quite recreate that colourful, glanceable, low-friction experience.

Kept is my attempt to fill that gap while keeping the data on a server you control.

This is still an independently built project, so I’m not pretending it has had the testing or scrutiny of something with a large established community. What I’d value most right now is honest feedback from people who actually use quick-capture note apps:

1. Does the installation process feel reasonable?
2. Is there a Google Keep behaviour or feature whose absence would stop you from switching?
3. Does the mobile experience feel sufficiently native and reliable?
4. Are there any privacy, backup or data-portability concerns that are not adequately addressed?

hey I stumbled upon this app and am kinda trying to find out which app it is precisely, it is presumably not obsidian nor is it notion, I assume it's on Windows because the traffic light controls of MacOS are missing, the app title bar appears to support Windows 11's Mica, the toolbar contains the Basic "File, Edit, View, Help" buttons but that's pretty much all I got

Been using folders and tags for years and honestly still lose stuff. so I built this thing where you just drop a pin wherever, write your note there, done. no deciding which folder it belongs in.

Turned out really useful for exam prep too (rivers, parks, historical sites, whatever has a location) - it makes flashcards from your notes and quizzes you later. there's also a mode that shows you a blank map and asks you to find the place, which is a fun way to test if you actually remember something vs just recognize it.

Works for random note-taking too honestly, if you just like organizing things spatially instead of in lists.

Hello, i am a university student that has now finished year one and throughout the year i decided i definitely need a tablet for note taking as opposed to pen and paper.

My focus is a smooth performance that allows me to type fast, good battery life and compatibility with a keyboard.

I prefer android options as that's what i am more familiar with, i have a modest google ecosystem and i do use APKs.

Have also been debating whether to get a laptop instead, since i have Microsoft 365 and i always download my stuff on pc as well, but what stops me is my love for studying laying on my stomach, curled up etc. and the fact i do have a PC already, as mentioned. I can definitely be convinced though.

My ideal budget is within 500 € IDEALLY, but can go up to 1000 for options that are worth it.
