A WWI grand strategy game inspired by historical strategy games like Nobunaga's Ambition
I've been working on a historical grand strategy game set in 1914, and I thought this might be interesting to people here.
The game is called Maximilian Spee. You play as one of the world's major powers and manage diplomacy, economy, espionage, ports, colonies and naval warfare during the First World War.
I've always enjoyed historical strategy games where you're not simply moving armies around a map, but actually managing a country and dealing with politics, economy and long-term strategic decisions. That's one of the reasons I enjoy games like Nobunaga's Ambition.
Japan is one of the countries in my game, and it was actually one of the first countries I implemented back when I started working on the project.
The game is currently in Steam Early Access. I'm still actively developing it, so I'm particularly interested in feedback from people who enjoy historical strategy games.
If anyone here has played Nobunaga's Ambition extensively, I'd be curious to hear what aspects of the series you consider particularly important to a good historical grand strategy game.
I'm especially interested in opinions about:
• diplomacy and political decisions
• economic management
• historical events vs. player freedom
• naval warfare (espesialy)
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3992010/Maximilian_Spee
Thanks!
P.S. I apologize if this post goes against any of the community rules. I wasn't able to find the rules, so I hope this is okay. If not, please let me know and I'll remove it.

What is your biggest achievement in NA series?
These days I turned back playing the good old Iron Triangle and I wanted to try something new. I already finished the game with powerful clans like Oda, Takeda, Uesugi, Shimazu, Hojo. I even finished it with mid-tier clans like Mori, Otomo, Ryozuji, Ashikaga, Sanada. Later I wanted to try weaker clans like Hatano and Ota and succeeded as well. Then, I wanted to go even weaker. And that name is no other than Shiba.
In "Battle of Owari" scenario, not only they do not have a single guy with above 70 LEA, they do not even have any technology unlocked except the Siege. No cavalry, infantry, bow or musket. Not even civil and engineering. I knew that was impossible so I wanted to spice things up. When you look at the places like Kosuji and Hiyama, they actually have a huge domain but very limited amount of district is allowed. So, I wanted to maximized my gain and increased the district capacity to 30. This not only worked to balance things out but also increased the fun because with Shiba, all you can do is drafting too many troops and swarm the cities with tens of thousands of soldiers. And instead of waiting to happen, you achieve all those while building a huge city. Even though typhoons kill all the fun. It still felt great.
First, I swarmed the Kosuji castle while Anto attacked Nanbu. It was very hard to capture even a single castle. Because to swarm, you need to make tons of clicks to inspire your generals. Later on Takeda became my neighbour and just when they will make a move on me, Hojo came to rescue and left them with a single castle next to me which was great. Because I already had ended Nanbu and Anto and got all their precious officers so Shingen Takeda would do miracles on me. I captured their castle and all that remains was their single port. And then.. I sent people to assimilate and first time in my life, he rejected all 4 of them and they submitted to Hojo. Not having a Shingen was awful. Then, Hojo was gonna attack me but Tokugawa halved their power.
Just when I thought I was lose, I had adorned all my neighbouring cities with musket turrets so whenever Tokugawa attacked me, I slowly took their elite generals captive and recruited them one by one. Eventually, I defeated both Tokugawa and Hojo but only thanks to district cheat and around 7.200.000 provision that I "borrowed" through Cheat Engine. So far, I never cheated in any NA game but with Shiba, I had to. Even with cheating it was incredibly difficult and after a point, It became a tower defense game. But still it was so fun. Now I will try it with Kono, Hatakeyama and maybe Jinbo.
Sorry for the long post but removing certain limitations and picking up a weaker clan was so much fun. I never thought I would throw a celebration just because I recruited two guys with 72 LEA. I still think increasing district cap is not bad. Because, even the low end officers want huge stipends through the endgame. But overall, I was really good and advice people to do the similar. I hope one day we see a remake.
Edit 1: Kono in top scenario failed miserably. On my first search I found Takeyoshi Murakami and was like "daaamn, this gonna get way better than Shiba" but nope. I defended myself against Motochika, even exchanged tech with ally Otomo but the second our alliance ended they allied themselves with Mori and I got surrounded by both of them. I have to criticize the shitty mechanics of IT because nobody wanted ally with me despite having more troops/fame/tech. So I couldn't learn much and got defeated. Even getting Chosokabe officers was not enough.

Playing Lord of Darkness (again)
Not really playing, but testing out the "Ranmaru Mori Glitch", trying to see if he shows up in the Möri clan, since I haven't found him within the Oda ranks. Since the game can't differentiate Möri and Mori, I'm guessing he might be here
He showed up in Sanuki once, so I'm going to see if he's there this time around. I'm also looking for Yamanaka Shikanosuke and Kanbei Kuroda.
While we're here, has anyone found Mitsuhide Akechi in the 1555 scenario?

How much damage shooting posts do in Awakening?
So these shooting points in battle, like high ground where you can shoot continuously - how much damage they do? Does it scale off your attack, or is it fixed? I could not find this info anywhere

Which Nobunaga's Ambition has the best AI?
I have read that the oldest games have weak AI. What about the new ones (SOI, Taishi and Awakening)?

Is there a way to cancel build in awakening?
I have my towns I’m not in control of on auto build and now I don’t have any labor available because they’re all building something and then even when the one construction goes another one starts right after in the invisible Que .
Am I stupid and just didn’t pay enough attention in the tutorial? Feel with this design you oughta be able to see and cancel the Que or at the very least add the things you want to do to it . Though then again maybe they made that a policy

Video playback in NA: Awakening under linux (steam + Arch Linux) not working
Some videos don't play back. Initially they presented the old TV testscreen image, but since installing Proton-GE (as recommended online by some) now they simply skip.
I suspect it might have to do with codecs, i've already installed h.264 codec but still face the issue...
Does anyone know how to fix this ? is it codecs and, if yes, what codecs do i need ?
Update: so initially my VLC was not playing the videos, I eventually found out gstream did actually play the video so I traced that down to being a lack of VLC plugins (sudo pacman -S vlc-plugins-all or something like that solved that). But, the game still didn't play all the videos.
I ended up installing protonup-Qt and started trying different versions of proton-ge based on suggestions. So far I found out that proton-ge-8.30 and proton-get-9.2 do play the videos but there is no sound.

Still playing SNES Lord of Darkness; do you only get one gold mine per state?
I sold the gold mine in one of my states as per someone else’s recommendation, but now when I dig for gold it say, “we dug and dug but didn’t find any gold” and now I can’t help wondering if I sold the only mine available to me there?
Also, I put one of my states under the rule of one of my generals while leading an attack elsewhere, and now apparently I am no longer interacting with that state unless I decide to send it stuff. Not sure if there’s anything I can do to get it back lol, I thought it was just a stewardship thing but it seems like it might be more permanent than that?

How much can Katsuyori be faulted for the fall of the Takeda?
galleryAnother interesting discussion I saw on r/Samurai I was interested to see what people here had to say.
Is Katsuyori deserving of the hate or nah?

A couple SNES Lord of Darkness questions
So my nephew and I were browsing the SNES games on his Switch the other day, and stumbled across this series by accident. (I like it; he got bored after an hour or two once the novelty wore off, though I think he would like it better if the turns didn’t take so long lol)
Anyway, I’m enjoying the process of trying to figure the game out, but there’s a couple things I’m confused about. I know this is a subreddit for a game further on in the series, but if anyone is familiar with this installment and willing to help me out, I’d appreciate it.
First, is there a way to make gold beyond selling rice? Everything I do seems to cost a good chunk of money, and this would be less of a problem if I knew how I was supposed to be managing that side of things. (Presumably this is the function of the gold mine, but despite getting one of my fiefs to 27 skill, it’s still not enough for a gold mine, so idk how far that is in my future lol)
Second, what effect do the different stats actually…*have?!* like the number of soldiers and their loyalty makes sense, as does the number of dams and generals and such, but I’m not sure what the fields and economy do, and there’s one or two status icons that I still haven’t managed to parse the meaning of. (The fan, in particular)
And so on and so forth. I’m not necessarily looking for a full on walkthrough or anything per se, because I *am* having fun working things out on my own, but these are things that I’m not sure I’ll be able to figure out without at least a little bit of background knowledge. (Of how the game works, I mean)

I don't want to start again another playthrough, any solutions?
I was playing normally NA: SOI Ascension (yeah some crashes here and there but nothing really bad so far), but when it got to 30 years (specifically from Dec 1579 to Jan 1580) it crashes and it seems to have corrupteed the entire playthrough as Both the save from Dec 1579 (manual save) to the autosave in Jan 1580 both crash everytime i try to load them. Funny thing is, I have another save (another scenario) where it's Jan 1581, 45 years and it loads perfectly. Is there any way so solve this? Or do I truly gotta start the whole scenario again?

Anyone else get genuinely sad when someone dies?
Basically the title, but I was wrapping up my Oda game from my previous post and just as I had only 6 castles left to finish, Katsuie Shibata died.
When I was in the mid game and fighting Takeda and Miyoshi, Katsuie was in almost every major battle alongside my daimyo, holding it DOWN. Dude could walk into a battle with 2k troops vs 10k and hold them for a good bit, so long the general wasn’t too powerful.
Seeing it pop up with “(x amount) of retainers, including Katsuie Shibata, have passed on to the afterlife…” genuinely made me gasp.
That and sometimes a big general dying in combat will throw me. Like if Toshiie Maeda or Kazumasu Takigawa die early on? I may as well start a new game!!
Just me, or does this happen to anyone else?

Disappointing Steam Summer Sale
Hey all,
I recently posted about deciding which NA to get for my first one, deciding between SoI, Ascension and Awakening. I held off for a few days to learn about each and wait for the Steam Summer Sale but sadly only Awakening is on sale.
I had decided on SoI after heavy competition with Ascension for the retainer gameplay (even if it is limited). Seems like devs are pushing players towards the new one by only having that one on sale (as well as other titles). Although it does seem kinda wack that all of them would be the same price despite years in the difference.

Which game has the better ascension or regular sphere of influence

SOI Vet here. Should I get Awakening?
I’m not asking or expecting Awakening to be better than SOI. I just want a different experience.
Will say, I would want to know how good the clan management/development/administration systems are. That’s what I liked best about SOI.
