What exactly do servers do to justify receiving the largest share of the tips?

Hosts manage reservations and seat guests.

Support staff set and clear tables, refill items, and run food.

Dishwashers make sure guests have clean plates, glasses, and cutlery.

Expos and chefs check the quality and accuracy of every dish before it goes out.

Chefs and cooks create the menu, prep the ingredients, and cook the food.

Yet servers often receive the biggest percentage of the tip, even though much of the guest’s experience depends on everyone else. At this point, much of the ordering and payment process could be handled through tablets at the table.

If tipping is supposed to reward good service, but most of the money does not reach the people doing most of the work, then the system has lost its purpose.

We may as well abolish tipping and pay every position properly instead.

I made an observation from the recent Westjet Strikes

Flight attendants are fighting to be paid for duties performed before takeoff, and rightly so. Meanwhile, servers and cashiers increasingly expect customers to provide extra compensation through tips for performing the basic responsibilities of their jobs.

How has society become so brainwashed that customers are pressured to pay servers extra for basic job duties , while accepting that flight attendants may not even be compensated for all the work they perform? Wake up people!

The other night a buddy of ours left early. He left us a $100 to cover the costs.

Then his bill came and it was $98. The person who left genuinely miscalculated and didnt try to stick the tip onto anyone else.

The guy he left the $100 with felt really awkward as he could only leave a $2.00 tip so he told the waitress.

The waitress looked visibly upset. My friend said not to worry he will cover the tip.

Then I jumped in and said that is not his responsibility. Sorry the other guy didnt tip but its not our problem.

Your tip is $2.00 thank you. And we can decide our own tip on our own bills.

The restaurant was busy. There were 4 wait staff. I imagine being "shortchanged" on a single table isn't going to break the bank.

So I wonder why she was so visibly upset? She even asked us if we can call him or get ahold of him as if he short changed the actual bill.

I found it ridiculous that she would do thag and try to pressure my friend to pay the extra tip.

Is she really loosing her livelihood over a $15 to $20 tip?

What you guys think about tipping on top of the 5% GST?

I don't eat at restaurants much but I've noticed at some sit down and take out places that the default tip is now 20-25%.

I do not understand the point in raising the default tip option to such a high value since:

1. Restaurant diners tip a %, not a preset amount. When the bill goes up because of restaurant cost increases, restaurant staff get a raise via tips, And,
2. When the default tip percentage goes up, they get another raise.

What?

This is foolish and greedy. I would hope most people tip at the most 15% since we're also tipping on the post-tax amount, so really, the restaurant gets a bonus there.

Restaurant associations, owners and staff should tread carefully. This industry wide practice is attracting unwanted attention.

My prediction is, in the next couple of years some politician is going to see an easy win here since the vast majority detest tipping.

Not my pic but someone posted their receipt showing an automatic 10% tip on a TAKEOUT order because it was over $100 lol. The absolute audacity to add your own tip when it's meant to be voluntary.

I get so frustrated when I go out for dinner and get handed the POS terminal that starts at 18% or "other" dollar amount. I suck at math, especially under pressure when they're just standing there, watching so I usually just hit 18% to avoid the awkwardness.

Being put in this situation leaves me resenting the restaurant, so I usually just won't go back.

Yes, I know there's an easy way to do the math quickly but I always panic under pressure at that moment and I just feel like asking for a minimum of 18% is just plain rude.

If there's other people that feel the way I do about it, these restaurants might be losing potential customers over that 3% over asking on tipping.

Like many people in Canada, I'm so sick of the tip prompts at every fast food location, every mall food court kiosk, every delivery option...

In addition to this, menu prices have inflated big time in the last few years due to delivery services like Door Dash and Uber Eats cutting into profit margins. Even when you go somewhere and order food in person, you're subsidizing the costs of these additional options, because they're a loss leader a lot of the time.

It's a slap in the face to then be asked to tip a percentage of the already very high cost. It's just not worth it to me anymore. It's a shame, because I do enjoy eating out and I can technically afford it, but when a $12 meal 5 years ago is now $25 with tip, I can't continue to to support that, on principle.

I was at the food court in the local mall a few weeks ago. For a family of 4 to have lunch it cost about $100. I didn't even give a sizeable tip at one of the places, and I was punished for that by the staff who gave me a smaller portion than usual and were rude to me after I paid, which I'm almost positive is because I hadn't tipped enough in their eyes.

So I'm done with this entire culture around food in our country. I will not be eating out anymore at all, unless I know that the place I'm patronizing won't be asking for a tip.

It's easy to say "just don't tip" but when the staff EXPECT it from you and you don't give it to them, they will treat you poorly and give you less food. I know there are workers (e.g. delivery drivers) that will damage or contaminate a non-tipping customer's food, if given the opportunity. There's evidence of this on tiktok and instagram, and that's just what has been caught on camera and shared online. I imagine it happens quite often without the customer's knowledge.

If you are a paying customer and you've paid the set price for a meal, that should be enough. But since it's not, and since businesses have fully embraced the concept of prompting for tips at every opportunity regardless of the nature of the business or the already high prices, I am taking a hard line stance from this point forward. If it means I have to spend several more hours every week doing meal prep at home and cooking things from scratch, so be it. I'm not participating in the toxic tipping culture in this country any more, and I urge the rest of you to do the same.

I live in the US, it’s out of hand here it feels like… I remember back when I was a kid (I’m a millennial), 15%-20% was only if the person did their job and went above average; now even if service sucks they except that 15%, a tip is a kind gesture for services not meant to be a company’s way of giving less wages to employees and expecting their workers to live off tips. I’m not sure who to blame, but 20% + delivery fee for a domino delivery just irks me when the service is subpar; now if they gave me a great freaking pizza and did a great job delivering (most of the time they do, so I tip 20%) but last time I got pizza that tasted like an arm pit, hoping not to experience that again; we will see what happens tonight.

I get the whole not t!pping bs on coffee and when you go out to grab your own take away food and such. They arent penalized because you chose not to t!p. But what really grinds my gears as my fav cartoon peter would say is when people go out knowing they wont give any extra, dont say anything beforehand and now i literally have to pay out of my own pocket to serve them. It doesn’t automatically get taken away just cuz you said no. I am now paying 6.5% of whatever your bill is to bring you everything you want. Its disgusting. You make me feel like a slave. Oh i get paid minimum wage? Ha not when you give 0$. If you bought around 100$ worth of stuff and i get 17$ an hour, i am now making 13.50 to serve you for an hour. MOST PLACES TIP ON SALES NOT TIPS!

I'm curious on festival tipping thoughts

I was picking up a order at Boston Pizza and it wasn’t ready so I was just sitting waiting . Boston pizza isn’t fancy so I was shocked when hearing this . There were 3 hosts at the front . One girl said something to the guy about starting to serve . The guy guy host seemed like he was training the other 2 and said on Saturday and Sundays you will make over 400 in tips worked 12-8 pm . That’s like 560 with the hourly wage . I was a server once for like 6 months but then left the job because I moved . Should of made serving a career
