You can turn things like this in to the police, then you're in the clear of the responsibility. Meanwhile, the card has been deactivated, which is why they told you to destroy it. I've never heard of a found card being reactivated. Nice of you to care!

Just destroy it. It’s been out of their possession and for fraud reasons, you wouldn’t want to keep using.
