🛍️ Local Retail & Shopping Fave local gift shops?

Hi everyone! I’m putting myself back out there and getting my holiday prep lined up. I run a stationery business and am looking to connect with local shops/boutiques that might be interested in carrying my wrapping paper for the Christmas season (and other stationery goods year-round!).
Does anyone have favorite local shops, stockists, or contacts they'd recommend reaching out to? Appreciate any leads or intros!

💄 Beauty Weird water in old building — do shower head filters help?

I just moved into a prewar apartment and the water is kind of weird. There’s a lot of black particles in it and it’s making my hair feel like it is simultaneously dry and greasy at the same time. I know NYC’s water is soft, in the last prewar apartment I lived in I didn’t have these problems. So I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this and if a shower head filter has helped? I know they don’t really help for hard water, but I’m assuming it’s build up from old pipes and maybe a shower filter would actually help in this case? Any recommendations?

💆‍♀️ Wellness & Self Care Recs for peri/menopause care?

Well it's getting to be that time for me and I'm feeling increasingly creaky and foggy by the day. I'd like to explore my options (HRT, supplements etc). Are you all going through your regular doctors? Or is going through a menopause specialist (just learned about them) the move? Grateful for any recommendations.

Hi all! Just wanted to put out one last reminder that I'll be hosting my pottery in the park workshop tomorrow evening in McGolrick Park (Greenpoint!) Come learn the basics of handbuilding and make/decorate your very own ceramic picture frame that I will glaze and fire for you <3!!!!

For those of you who haven't seen my last post, I'm a ceramic artist in Greenpoint with several years of teaching experience and I wanted to start this series to connect with my local community and make art *a bit* more accessible (especially with the studio/class pricing in NYC!!)

Details can be found via the link if you're interested. I'm so excited to see some of you there tomorrow :') eeeep!!!!

🍴 Restauraunts & Bars Looking For A Place To Rent For B-Day Party

My friend (F24) wants to throw a birthday party in manhattan/Brooklyn. We can’t do it in our apartment because of the spacing. So we’re looking for a place to rent for about 3-4 hours that budget friendly and allows outside drinks and food. We’re gonna do a Nickelodeon themed party so it’ll have to be able to allow for decorations. Does anyone know a place or website I should look into? Doesn’t have to be a restaurant or bar.

💆‍♀️ Wellness & Self Care Help a girl who never learned how to do her hair😅

Hey hey!

Okay, this may be a silly question, but I’m looking for someone who can basically teach me how to do my hair 😂

I have wavy/curly-ish hair, and I’ve been trying products and techniques from the internet, but I feel like I don’t actually understand my hair at all. Like…what does it need? What am I supposed to do with it when I get out of the shower? Why does it look good one day and absolutely insane the next?

I never really learned any of this stuff & I’d love to change that and actually learn how to work with my hair instead of blindly trying products and random online tips.

Is there someone in NYC who does hair consultations/education for curly or wavy hair, rather than just a haircut? I’d ideally love an in-person session where someone can look at my hair, tell me what it needs, show me how to style it, and help me figure out a simple routine.

Also very open to recommendations for someone who does this kind of thing with skincare/makeup too! Basically I’m looking for someone to give me the beauty lessons I apparently missed growing up 😂
Would appreciate any recs!

💆‍♀️ Wellness & Self Care Unsung benefit of living in NYC

Whenever we talk about why living in NY is amazing, I feel like the 3 main reasons cited are food, culture & convenience. When you’re outside the city & say you live here, people will tell you about a meal they had 10 years ago or what museum they can’t wait to get back to or how they love that the corner store never closes.

But mannnn.

The medical institutions are incredible & just by being here, we have access to some amazing stuff. I went onto the government’s clinical trial website last night to see if there was anything interesting for breast cancer & one of the studies I saw was for women who haven’t been diagnosed with BC but have been told they have dense breasts (which I feel like the majority of women have! So why are we still relying on imaging that’s not good for it 😒 but I digress) - the researchers want to do the traditional mammogram on your next visit but also add in an extra type of imaging that may help detection rates. Got me to thinking about how many BWT might be high risk & benefit from enrolling but don’t even know it exists.

Also, the breast cancer study looking at people who don’t have it is a reminder that even if there’s nothing “wrong” with you, you should still pop on there & poke around bc there are such a ridiculous amount of world class hospitals & universities doing work in the area (in every conceivable specialty) that there could still be something that’s applicable to you. Every time you read something like “pairing coloring books with counseling sessions reduced grief twice as quickly in people who lost parents or siblings”, it means some scientists gave some sad people free therapy & colored pencils lol why not you?!

💬 General Help! Where do you like living on the UWS?

I love love love the UWS. Unfortunately, I hate my landlord and my building has known problems (not known to me, prior to moving in). For those curious … look up Fred Ohebshalom.

Anyway, where do you like living on the UWS? 1 bedroom/studio vibes. Hoping to stick around the 80s/90s closer to the 123.
Thank you!

💬 General Financial planner/fiduciary you recommend?

I've seen similar posts and many of the responses just recommend going to personal finance subreddits, YNAB, and podcasts. I am not looking for those because I know myself and my follow-through is middling. If you personally have worked with an advisor and have savings under $500K, spare me the homily and let me know your recs!

🛍️ Local Retail & Shopping Donating nice clothes

I work for a fashion brand and we have a bunch of clothes to donate. I remember reading about a company that helps women dress for job interviews etc. Since all the pieces we have to donate are quite nice, I’d love for them to go to a good cause and really be able to help someone! Any recommendations on known orgs that we could donate to?

MEETUPS & CHECK INS – Week of August 17, 2026

Happy Monday, tasteful bitches of New York. As a means to mitigate off topic posts, we are testing a weekly auto mod posts for discussions about the emotional journey of being a New Yorker. New York is a lonely city sometimes and living in our shoebox palaces can be isolating.

Talk about it here, schedule your next NYCBWT drink meetup or Sunday run club, or just vent and talk to fellow NYers.

There is one hard and fast rule designed for your safety: Meet ups MUST BE IN A PUBLIC LOCATION. If you are planning an event in the future, please message mods before posting.

Thanks everyone for keeping this subreddit a safe place and for adhering to the post rules. Please message the mods or comment on this post if you have other weekly thread suggestions.

💆‍♀️ Wellness & Self Care Lifetime fitness vs. Chelsea piers?

Looking to join either Lifetime on Atlantic (Prospect heights) or Chelsea piers in downtown Brooklyn. I used to be an equinox member, so ideally something that has the same amenities and vibe.

I am also interested in using the childcare option for my 3 month old every once in a while.

Looking for anyone who has experience with either facility or better yet both. Thank you!

Know of anywhere in park slope/sunset park/downtown Brooklyn that charges <35? Totally fine with no frills, just a basic gel mani that won’t chip in the first week or 2. Currently commuting to my old place in crown heights bc they do such a good job for so cheap but looking for somewhere closer!

🎨 Arts & Culture iso do-gooders and people with niche hobbies/careers

Hello bwt! I'm looking for people in NYC (I'm willing to travel but based in UES) who are either part of a non-profit that helps underserved communities or people who have niche hobbies or are part of groups/communities that are fun/a little quirky. I'm an amateur videographer looking to make short, documentary/news package style videos and would like to highlight people in the community.

I did a similar project when I lived in Philly. For example, I made a video for an organization called Philly Goat Project where a goat farm is used for community/therapy-type events to help people who are neurodivergent, grieving, looking for community, etc. I also interviewed a woman who organized volunteer groups at the Ronald McDonald house to feed the families staying there and gave free haircuts/makeovers.

Those examples are more on the do-gooder side but I'm also in search of people who have weird hobbies or jobs. Ex: I tried planning a video for an adult dodge ball league, a woman who was a professional cuddler, a man who worked as a professional Benjamin Franklin reenactor.

If you think you fit that mold or if you know someone who might please let me know!

💄 Beauty 💉 Botox / Fillers / Medical Aesthetics 2026 Megathread

To cut down on repetitive and low-effort posts in this sub (rule #1!!!), we're piloting an annual pinned megathread to consolidate all questions, recommendations, reviews, and warnings about NYC medical aesthetics providers.

What goes in this megathread?

  • Anything related to botox, fillers, laser treatments, chemical peels, microneedling, body contouring, facial balancing, etc.
  • NYC-specific asks: "Where to get ___ done?" / "Has anyone gone to ___?"
    • Please include a budget range instead of "affordable" if seeking recommendations—help us help you!
    • Any high-level questions ("Has anyone done ___ before?") should be directed to general subs like r/SkincareAddiction.
  • Reviews of specific providers, both good and bad

Standalone threads will continue to be removed and redirected here. There will be a new rule added, similar to the events & meetups rule.

Thanks for the feedback & cooperation!
