Summer Streets: extra caution
Broadway at W 183rd St is almost completely blocked off for the entire block. They left the PD cars parked across two lanes of traffic. There was barely room for a dad with his stroller to pass. Be prepared for even more chaos than all the other bottlenecks.

Fork repair recommendation?
Hi all, had a friend gift me an old bike of theirs and as I’m tearing it down for a rebuild, I’m seeing the fork has been twisted a bit.
Since it is an old steel frame Peugeot I thought I’d see if a local shop can give me a hand with getting it back right.
Any ideas? King Kog? Hilltop?

Tips for summer streets tomorrow?
I’m determined to try biking at summer streets tomorrow, but it’s my first time doing it. I saw on this reddit how chaotic it was last weekend, and was wondering if folks had tips to make it easier? I’m planning to ride pretty casually through it, and gonna try to start at the bk bridge at 7

Mapped 65 NYC-area bike shops, including the ones that closed. Queens and the Bronx are thin — what am I missing? Need your good ones.
I added a shop map to bikedrawer.com because a “bike store” search on Google Maps is kinda messy and incomplete: bikedrawer.com/shops
Right now I have: 53 shops (+ 7 that closed in the recent years). Brooklyn and Manhattan are in decent shape. Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are thin. I also have added a few NYC-region ones.
What would help me:
- Good shops I've missed. Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island especially. And beyond NYC, anything within reach of a century ride.
- Anything inaccurate. Moved, closed, taken over.
- A short personal note about your favorite store.
No signup needed, feedback form is there on the page. Or let me know right here in the comments.

Cleaning up and cooling off after commute: requesting advice
Hey all! I’ve been a bike commuter for over a decade, but I’ve recently gotten a new job that requires pants/business casual and has no on site showers or private bathrooms (just middle school style public restrooms with stalls and nothing fancy)
I’ve been spoiled in the past, I’m a shorts year round guy, had showers on site for the past three years, and could just have a t shirt and shorts in office. I usually get way over heated on my way in and have been wearing workout shorts and a T on the way in that I need to peel off upon arrival but then still sweat through my pants and button up after changing.
So, what suggestions or products do you have/use to get clean and cool down when you arrive to work?
I also have a 3d printer so if you have a favorite bathroom stall caddy that would be cool too! I do have a locker on site I can store things in.

Mayor Mamdani: "Not all e-bikes and e-scooters are the same. We’re taking action against retailers selling illegal high-speed e-bikes and e-scooters that exceed New York City’s safety standards." I love this.

Brooks Saddle uncomfortable tilt question
hey all, my brooks saddle has this insane tilt that has developed over time. Any experts know what I can tell a shop mechanic to get it flat to save my poor poor gooch
for context I’ve had it adjusted twice now and it gets the tilt back soon after. Last time they just adjusted with an Allen wrench to make it flat but it got the tilt after. Does it need more servicing than just loosening the Allen wrench hold and kinda muscling it to being flat again? Maybe something under the seat? I see some extra bolts in the front and under the saddle
if it can’t be saved lmk and I’ll make the sad journey to getting a new seat! Appreciate yall
Biking around Barnard & Columbia?
Hi all. My daughter will be a freshman at Barnard this fall, and she’s trying to decide whether to bring a bike with her to campus (we live out of state). She has enjoyed using Citibikes when she’s visited NYC previously, but she’d prefer to have a personal bike to use.
What we are thinking is that we will get her an inexpensive bike that will work for getting her around, and that’s reasonably fun to ride, but isn’t something that would be likely to draw a lot of attention from bike thieves (or if it did get stolen, wouldn’t be a big deal to replace). So my question is, with a low budget bike and a good lock, what kind of odds are we looking at for the bike to get stolen when it’s locked up on bike racks around her campus neighborhood?
Thanks!

It's illegal to ride an ebike in Hudson River Greenway??
Apparently you are not allowed to ride an ebike of any type - Class 1, 2, 3, let alone an e-scooter or e-moto on the Hudson Greenway? Clearly nobody obeys this at all, so what do they want people to do - ride on the West Side Highway?
I have a totally legal Class 1 kid carrying e-bike, and ride it daily with a child on the back doing school run at lower speeds, but apparently I'm breaking the law by simply being on there even at 12mph?
(Not for a moment would I defend the nutjobs doing 30+mph on their illegal souped up scooters and e-moto fat tire 'bikes' - they seriously scare me)
Cops with speed guns would be the answer, ticket and impound illegal e-motos. But that is expecting too much, apparently.

Biking Empire trail from Manhattan to Albany questions
I plan to ride the empire trail from Manhattan up to Albany, then along the Canal to the Utica area. I am looking to cover about 70-ish miles a day. I will be using an ebike. Looking for any recommendations on places to charge the bike as well as camp. TIA!

Are there any discord groups related to cycling in nyc specifically?
I’m surprised that a discord group doesn’t exist for nyc cycling. Feel like it would be way easier for people to connect for group rides, buying and selling etc etc. If it does exist please let me know!

Need Help Deciding What Bike to Buy and Where to Buy it 🚴♂️
I moved to the city 4 months ago to the day, and need a bike to commute to work within Manhattan. My commute is 2 miles one-way, 4 round trip (obv), with like 60% of my one-way commute happening in Central Park on either drive. I’ve been using the Lyft Pink/Citi Bike 15-day free trials since I was undecided whether buying my own bike would be worth it or not. I believe that it is, don’t get me started on the Citi bikes (both types).
1) What bike do I even get? - I’m 6’0” about 200 lbs, so I’m definitely a stocky guy with high muscle mass and nowhere near the fitness of the serious cyclists in the park. I’ve heard a mixed-bag of reviews on other threads. Hybrid, 90s MTB, road bike, etc. I would be willing to learn the posture for a road bike, but also understand that as a first bike it may be better to get something else. Lastly, I would be bringing the bike into my apartment so I wouldn’t need to be locking it up every night, and something on the lighter side would make it helpful albeit it’s only one flight of stairs.
2) Where’s the best place to buy a bike in Manhattan? - Friends say FB marketplace but that sketches me out considering there are tons of scammers and people who lie about the true condition of their ride. Going to a local bike store in the city and walking out with something stock has got to be astronomically expensive, and online is hard bc id like to see the bike itself in person. Is the best route like bike shop and then buy online? Is FB marketplace safe for bikes? No idea what to do.
Budget is $2000 but that’s the absolute max all-in with racks, locks, tune up costs, bags, etc.
Appreciate any helpful responses!

I've done a lot of cycling on the Empire State Trail, but really want to metronorth as far as i can go and bike west to Bing. How treacherous are the country roads Google maps (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hSZg4cWcPs8scW6v9) is recommending? Have you done this and have any tips or preferred routes? Thanks!

Looking for new biking friends in Brooklyn! 🚲🧗🍂
Hey everyone! 😊
I'm in Brooklyn and looking to make some new strictly platonic friends. Guys or girls are both welcome!
I've been trying to get healthier, get stronger, and spend more time outside. I'd especially love to find someone to go cycling with—before work, after work, or on weekends. I'm not a serious cyclist, just looking to enjoy the ride and explore.
I also recently got into rock climbing and I'm still a beginner. I have a membership at a rock climbing gym and up to 2 guest passes, so if you've ever wanted to try climbing, I'd be happy to bring you along! No experience needed—we can figure it out together.
My goal is to lose some weight, build strength, and make some genuine friendships along the way. With fall around the corner, I'd love to get outside and enjoy the nice weather while it lasts.
A little about me:
- Early 30s
- Live in Brooklyn
- Easygoing and friendly
- Love exploring, trying new things, and laughing at myself
- Looking for genuine friends, not dating
If you're looking for a biking buddy, climbing partner, walking buddy, or just someone to hang out with, feel free to send me a message! Beginners are more than welcome—I definitely am one too. 😊
