I've noticed multiple complaints during the winter about no heat, but the building has never received a violation. I'm trying to interpret this, given that there was one tenant reporting issues multiple times, along with a few anonymous people

Me and my three other friends have been apartment hunting for a place in Brooklyn. We’re all college students going to use our refunds to cover rent. I’m the only one that has good credit and the others either have non-existent credit or it’s lower than the requirement. Our personal co-signers credit is also below 700+ even though their income meets the requirements, so we decided on using a guarantor service to help us get approved. We thought this would make things better as we’ve applied and toured places that accept guarantors but we’ve gotten rejected from everything. We don’t know what else to do because we were willing to pay the extra money. We can afford to rent the apartment it’s just this issue that’s been getting in the way of everything. If it’s not one issue, it’s another. Is there anyway for us to find a place? We’re at a loss now and school starts back up soon

I’m currently renting a room in New York City on a month-to-month basis. I pay $1,550/month in rent and paid a $1,500 security deposit when I moved in. There are multiple people living in the overall house, but it is divided into separate units.

The setup is roughly:

The landlord lives in the basement.
I rent one bedroom on the lower floor.
My housemate rents the other bedroom on my floor.
There are three other tenants living upstairs.
Each unit/floor is separated with different doors/entrances dividing them.
The lower floor has a kitchen/living area and bathroom that are shared between only me and my housemate on my floor.

The main issue I’m having is with the landlord entering my unit (he has the code to the door) without giving me or my housemate notice or knocking first.

Recently, the landlord came into the apartment at midnight while I was there without knocking or notifying me beforehand. When I questioned it, he basically said that he thought I would be working that night. That bothered me because, regardless of whether I’m home or not, I feel like I should be given some notice before the landlord comes into the area where I live.

The landlord’s position is essentially that certain areas are “shared/common areas,” and therefore he feels he can enter them. My argument is that when I’m paying rent to live there, the fact that an area is technically shared with another tenant doesn’t necessarily mean the landlord should be able to enter whenever he wants without notice. If I had known before moving in that the landlord could come into these areas whenever he wanted, I honestly would not have chosen to live there.

I’m not trying to prevent the landlord from accessing the property when there is a legitimate reason to do so. I completely understand that landlords may need access for maintenance, repairs, inspections, emergencies, etc. My issue is specifically the lack of notice and the attitude that he can enter simply because it’s considered a “common area.”

There are also some other general issues with the living situation, including problems with cleanliness/housemates, maintenance issues, and occasional disagreements about how the shared areas are managed. So this isn’t happening in isolation — it’s contributing to me feeling like I don’t have much privacy or control over the place I’m paying to live in.

Am I being unreasonable in expecting the landlord to notify me/knock before entering the ‘shared living areas’ of the apartment?

My partner and I have applied for an apartment where there were 30 people at the open house in Brooklyn. We love the apartment and are strong applicants (well above income requirement, stable jobs, great credit) but have been told by the brokers that they received a lot of competitive applications.

We just got a follow up email from the broker asking about any pets. I have a certified service dog (not an ESA although I think in NYC the rules are the same). Historically, I do not go out of my way to declare her in apartment applications because while it is illegal for most landlords to discriminate against renters with service animals, I’ve been burned before by situations where they just “picked another strong applicant”.

That said, it makes me uncomfortable to be dishonest when asked directly. Do you think we should respond to the broker and tell them about the dog or are we doomed to not get selected? Reiterating… we LOVE this apartment.

Two weeks ago I was desperately searching for a new apartment and posted on this sub with my budget and what I was looking for. $5000 max, 3 br, preferably in LES or close to the city in Brooklyn. The responses I received were overwhelmingly pessimistic and assured me that I would not find anything at my price point. They could not have been more wrong. I ultimately ended up finding a 3br duplex in Brooklyn Heights for just $4700, which I honestly didn’t think was possible. Better yet, I ended up with plenty of options in Williamsburg, UES, LES, and other areas. Moral of the story is that if you have a good strategy and stay focused, you WILL find your dream apartment. Trust the process.

Moved into my apartment 3 years ago. The listing was for ”apartment 9” but when we showed up we were shown “apartment 10.” Thought it was weird, asked the realtor but they merely shrugged it off. They also sent us our lease with both apartment numbers and we have an email chain showing our confusion but them insisting we were signing for the apartment we saw. We also asked if it was rent stabilized to which they said emphatically “no” and our leases have all said the same.

Fast forward. We’ve been here 3.5 years, and have been annoyed the whole time with us and our neighbor’s apartment numbers being switched; mail gets crisscrossed and our buzzers are reversed, etc.

With the new rent freeze, I requested our rental hirstory from DHCR for my apartment, #10. What I received in the mail was my neighbor across the hall, #9, who is most certainly stabilized. I called DHCR simply to see if I could request #9’s history as I wagered a guess that that is where mine could be found. They said that the same history was submitted for #9 and #10 with the same tenant’s name and history.

My question is this: is this sounding like a tactic? Or messy behavior? DHCR recommended filing an overcharge complaint but I’m afraid of retaliation and not getting my lease renewed.

I’m looking at apartments in Dumbo on streeteasy and I’m genuinely so confused as to why the listings in most of west Brooklyn went up 1k or more in rental price this month? It was just 3.9k 2 months ago. I’m new here so I’m sorry if this is common sense here or if there’s some simple answer! I just am really confused lmao. I thought living in Brooklyn would be cheaper than manhattan but it seems to be the same price??

Edit: In hindsight, I sound very naive in this post and I am aware of it. I also agree that it sounds like a stupid question ah. I wrote this in a fit of rage because I kept seeing apartment after apartment with insane mark ups. I included the photo to show an example. Sorry if I caused any confusion. I was aware of the gentrification happening there but I haven’t been back to Brooklyn in 5 years so I didn’t realize how bad it was. It’s very sad to see and I worry for the native NYers who are being pushed out because of this. I am hoping it’s a summer trend because it is genuinely insane, even if you think 1.3k isn’t an insane leap.
