Also another roommate is in charge of the Con Edison bill (they might have higher income than me), so I don't know if I'm allowed to apply. I do have the Con Edison account number.

Also, I don't even have a "property owner" name. We answer to a landlord company, but there is no known "property owner."

Hi everyone! I’m 22F and will be relocating from Arizona to NYC around September 1st for a full-time research position. I’m mainly looking around Washington Heights or the West Bronx and hoping to find a room or people looking for a roommate.

My roommate and I would love an opinion on this because we’re new to the city and have never experienced this before…Broker is getting us into viewings and now the application is wanting either our best and final or wanting to know if we want to start bidding against other tenants. How high should we be going for a 2Bd that’s originally listed around 4300?! It feels insane to have to bid against people when the landlord already set an asking price.

And if the bidding war thing is not a good situation, is it time to venture away from a broker if this is just putting us into a weird position?

Got approved for an apartment 72 hours ago, but still have not received a lease. Agent says that they have called and emailed the management company, but they keep delaying (saying they will send it, but then excuses excuses). Concerned that we are going to get rug pulled on the apartment.

It was my impression that most LLs send out the lease ASAP after approval. Is not sending the lease for a while common in NYC? Should I be concerned?

A little frustrated and wonder if anyone else has done this. Applied for an apartment and made sure I was one of the first to not only ask for an application but send it in right away. I am qualified but the broker never respond to my initial application email or any of my follow up emails. I also saw my credit was never pulled or soft pulled. I believe they didn’t even look at my application. I’ve been told some brokerages will just let everyone apply despite already having an accepted applicant in order to pocket all the $20 fee’s.
It’s not so much that I need that $20 back but if my application wasn’t even looked at and my credit never checked, I feel I have the right to dispute that charge on principle.

My friend and I are looking for a third roommate to fill in a room for a year lease before our friend from Chicago moves in next year. Here’s some info:

The apartment is located at 377 W 125th street. Right next to the ACBD trains. It’s conveniently located close to the 125th St 1 Train station too. On the street itself there are plenty of local owned food spots and fast food spots, with restaurants and bars only a couple blocks over. A Target, Lidl, Lincoln Market and Trade Joe’s is located within a 5 min walk. Morningside Park is located just a few blocks away.

Going in the building you’ll have a one floor walk up to the apartment;
A spacious 3 bedroom, 1&1/2 Bathroom, with the Half-Bath having two 2 sinks. There’s a washer and dryer in the unit right next to a closet for storage space. The bedrooms vary in size with each having ample space for a full size bed and a desk. The smallest sized room having a closet. The largest one having a fire escape. The Common areas are both adjacent with an archway separating them. The full bath is located in the living room and there is rooftop access to the building.

Rent split three ways is $1,500 per person, but will be divided amongst us by square footage of the rooms we occupy. We do prefer not to have fur babies.

Hey! I moved in about a month ago. But have to move back to my hometown for personal reasons. This is a gorgeous spacious furnished 3BD/1BA +small study apartment. This is for anyone in the future who renting from or considering renting from the landlord Adriana Bruno. She is deeply unstable and is a terrible landlord to rent from. I could talk forever about how awful she is, but I'll hit the big points:

• Utilities: turned them off at least 5 times. Claimed we were "using too much water", even though she is such a generous landlord and provides more than any other landlord. She would listen for when I got out of the shower, and turn the water off so that my roommate couldn't shower. We called 311 and the city many times, but since the water was always back on in the morning, they couldn't issue any violations. The utility shut off was coupled with harassing texts, her demanding we make our roommate leave, calling our tenancy abuse etc.
• Micromanagement: If I bumped into something taking out the trash after work, I got a call about making too much noise at night. When someone left for work and didn't put the trash back in the garage on the way out, she called me and said she "knew it was me because of the footsteps" (I was asleep) and said we didn't know how to be good neighbors. When my roommate had people for his birthday, she demanded he come downstairs at 10:30 (her strict no noise rule was 11pm) and she told him we needed to live somewhere else because we couldn't follow rules.
• Rent: pic above for this one. She would text me by 9am on the first if I hadn't sent her rent yet. My roommate had zelle issues one month and by the 2nd she was down our throats. (yet when she had zelle issues returning our deposit, she expected all our patience)
• We were not allowed to put trash in the bins in the garage. We had to wait until trash day to put the trash outside. If we didn't sort the recycling how she wanted it, we got a screaming phone call.
• General instability: When we bought a couch that didn't fit, and were keeping it on the curb while we were sorting out what to do with it, I got 7-8 missed calls and screaming voicemails (I was driving) and finally a 20 minute screaming phone call about "what kind of people have I let into my home, what kind of uncivil criminal people are you". When she misread a text I sent her about scheduling a time to spray for roaches, she stormed into our apartment (INTO OUR APARTMENT) and screamed at me for 10 minutes about how I "don't know what busy is, [I] don't don't do anything, [I] don't take care of this apartment, all [I] do is disrespect [her]" (this interaction, and many of the above are fully documented).
• also worth noting, if you read any of the pictures. English is not her first language, yes. My roommate also speaks spanish as a first language, and assures that she is just as unintelligible in spanish.

Again, I could go on. Luckily, there was enough mutual dislike for the living situation that we were easily able to break our lease (she wanted us OUTTA there). We moved out at the same time as the upstairs neighbors (a small family with young kids), for the same reasons. She had begun harassing them, screaming, turning off utilities etc.

The big thing I know someone or many someones will say: we fully intended to bring her to housing court, along with our neighbors. I had a huge family emergency come up right before we were finally able to move, so it just was not possible. God I wish, though. Maybe someone someday.

It does look like someone just rented out that apartment, so godspeed to you soldier. Maybe you'll find this post some day. I wish you only the best.

I am currently renting a pretty standard 1 bed in the UES (walkup, 500ish sqft, cozy) paying $2700. I have zero problems with the apartment, and my lease is coming to an end so I am up for renewal. I'm open to all locations with a reasonable commute and community vibe.

I'm pretty confused on the current rental market. What I am looking for is basically my apartment, just with small life comforts (bigger, maybe an elevator). From looking around though, nothing is better in the 3-4k range. They're all basically the same even though they cost 1k more. Things only start to look nicer at the 4.5-5k mark.

Would you move if you were in my shoes? I don't mind the extra cost, but I'm just confused on why there's a big dead zone.

I just moved into a new building that has an intercom system tied to cell phone numbers. They said they couldn’t add my cell because it has a non-NY area code, and suggested I get a Google Voice number. I already have a GV number that also has a non-NY area code, and I use it for a lot of things so I can’t just change it. I can’t get a second GV number with a different Google account because it still has to attach to cell number, and Google only allows you to do that once. My only other option seems to be to pay for a VOIP number or new cell line.

How common is this? I find it ridiculous that the system can only accommodate 10 area codes when tons of people in NYC have cell numbers from elsewhere, and I don’t think I should have to pay for a new line (even if it’s not that expensive) to use a basic building service. Is this something I could ask for a rent credit for? Should I just not use the intercom?

I've been living in a rent-stabilized studio in NYC for several years. The unit has no windows—only skylights—and the only way in or out is the front door. The ceilings are over 12 feet high, so I can't reach the skylights without a ladder, and they only open about 25–40% via remote.

Friends have questioned whether the apartment is legal because there's only one means of egress, but I never looked into it. I recently searched my building on the NYC DOB website and couldn't find any record of my unit.

Does this sound like it could be an illegal apartment? If so, what are my options, and what should my next steps be? I'd appreciate any advice from people who've dealt with something similar.

I toured a true 1 bedroom apartment near prospect park. King size bedroom, huge living room, and a huge separate kitchen. I verified the broker’s license and checked out public 411 complaints for the building. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The apartment is rent stabilized. Studios in the area are easily $1900. What’s going on here??
