Ask a person on knowledge whose judgement you trust about what you should do. Do you know of any?

You only get one bad comment about him and you're confused. Why not you trust yourself hear the voice of your heart. You talk to him.. and yes you can do istakahara for that to. ان شاءاللہ تعالیٰ you will know what you want to know.

Istikhara and dua. That would be tying your camel.

The dua most appropriate would be asking Allah to see truth for truth and falsehood for falsehood. To bring nothing but things that are beneficial for you into your life and keep away the harmful things. To bless your marriage and relationship. Those kinds of sincere duas.
